Some Design help with a WIP Character Sheet

By dipicacyx, in Genesys

G'day Everybody,

I was recently inspired by a couple of different character sheets I've seen on here: The DnD-style Terrinoth sheet by drainsmith, and this "Compact Character Sheet" that I cannot for the life of me find the original post (I've attached the jpeg). I wanted a sheet with the nice positioning of the DnD-style sheet, but including the interesting way of tracking the skills from the compact sheet (basically, instead of just a number, or just a series of boxes, each box is a hexagon with a diamond within - you colour them in the show your actual dice roll for that skill). I also wanted a bit more space for the weapon notes, and a divide between combat talents and non-combat talents.

This is my first attempt - landscape, like the compact one. Everything fits, but, well, it's ugly, as you can tell.

Attempt 2 - portrait. I think the spacing is a bit better, but again it's missing, well, proper design.

I've been using Scribus, and the file is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nflu0k9fpbaz4rc/Genesys Compact Character Sheet - Scribus.sla?dl=0 . I'd appreciate it if anyone with actual aesthetic sense could give me some tips on how to arrange these rather plain rectangles.

I really think you're onto something with the landscape one. It's missing soak and heroic ability, but you could just put soak under wounds and strain and maybe remove the "custom skills" and replace that with the heroic ability. Also I think you should make the box for weapon names slightly bigger to accomodate for signature spells and whatnots, and also make the special box slightly bigger. You could also add a second page with room for notes and gear. In the gear section maybe make room for page reference and special rules, wich I believe is sorely lacking on the official sheet. Also, if you make the skill boxes blank, and preferably form fillable, I think you've made a good, simplistic sheet that'll work well in any setting. Can't wait to see where you go with this.

I really like what you've done here. I too liked the landscape one. I kind of went to town on it and made a kind of Terrinoth-esque version for my group if you don't mind. I also have no idea about aesthetics, but I tried to compact it a little more and fit everything in, including Heroic Abilities.

A small line or something where you can record how many ranks of a skill you've purchased would probably also be a good idea. I realise that it can easily be figured out by reverse engineering your dicepool, but I think it's usefull to be able to see your ranks in a glance, like when spending XP or resolving a passive check.

Thank you for the feedback, @PurpleKittenofDeath . It's a good point about the skill rank - I had forgotten that you do actually need that.

@Khoram , that's awesome! That's the kind of thing I was trying to do. Did you use Scribus? If so, would you be able to share the .sla file?

@dipicacyx yes I used Scribus. I had been wanting to learn to use it for awhile but I had no idea how to start. Your sheet was a perfect way to get my feet wet :)

Here is the file I am using. Please keep us updated on any changes you make!

On the old star wars rpg sheets we had a method of displaying skill ranks vs ability so you could get the pool easily while still knowing your pool. I think your intention was to actually show the pool here but I think I could use it to show ranks instead. Just color in the diamonds for each skill rank you purchase. Then color the outer edge of the hex at the die symbol for your associated characteristic. I don't know, it worked easily for us before and I never had any doubt about how many ranks I had purchased.

ETA: I added a Talent Pyramid Sheet in the PDF linked above and in the scribus doc. I didn't notice before the doc was in A4 paper size but it printed fine on letter sized paper when I printed the PDF earlier.

Thanks for th feedback, Khoram. I’m not sure if I’ll put anything else up as I’m just struggling to get the design in a good shape with everything fitting how I’d like in portrait, even after a few too many hours with Scribus at 3am. Plus, the one you’ve done and the one from Bellyon pretty much cover what I was trying to do. I’ll see how I go.

Oh, and the A4 is because that’s the standard size here in Australia. I forget that not everyone uses that. Glad printing in letter size still worked.
