New HWK?

By SDCC, in X-Wing

Ahh I forgot about that ship. I have not played in about a year since I hated the state of the game but 2.0 has reignited my interest.

Well, I don’t think it has been used much beyond FFG’s rpg, so it’s easily missed.

Last night a group of us were discussing 2.0 and it was asked which factions the HWK would be in. We agreed that it should stay Rebel/Scum, but then something else came up.

FAQ tells us exactly what factions it will be in:

How many ships does each Conversion Kit convert?

The number of ships supported (by maneuver dials included) in each Conversion Kit are:

Rebel Alliance Conversion Kit

...
2 – HWK-290

...

Scum and Villainy Conversion Kit

...
2 – HWK-290

Shouldn't it be a lot bigger?

Wookiepedia has it at 29m, whilst an X-Wing is 12.5. That's quite the difference.

I wonder if FFG will take the chance to make it what it should be - A fast medium base ship.

I personally don’t think it should be much bigger. I remember playing the Dark Forces games, and the HWK wasn’t much larger than a 2-person heavy-fighter.

There's some beautiful fan art out there for the Moldy Crow for the 16.5m version of the Moldy Crow, showing how viable that length is:

The window layout doesn’t work, but I do love this interpretation of the HWK’s deck plan.

Is....is that a proton torpedo launcher under the cockpit?

Gotta get through Customs one way or another.

In the Rebel Conversion spread there is a dial that I think could only come from the HWK. It has a 1 reverse and a 3K now. Also the 1 straight is blue so you could just go back and forth hovering.

my bet is that new dial with the 1 reverse will be for the Phantom 1/Phantom II shuttles. You'll be able to reverse back into the VCX-100 and re dock mid game! That's my prediction anyway.

Good thing that, thanks to the Kanan comic, the HWK-290 IS canon.

And quite roomy.

Never take Wook as a source. They've been wrong for years.

That is not the 16m variant, please stop misleading people. This HWK-290 drawing is ~32-34m long, give or take. No matter what the length is, this is a redesign.
Here is the actual 100% canon length.

Its size is non negotiable.

Original source. 16m or 52ft seems correct for the ships true size. Oh, and it can sit there and hover without being stressed, unless Kyle is making bad jokes.

That would be really cool. It would make it much easier to justify deploying the shuttle for a couple of attacks if you could join back up later

I was really hoping for the medium base to make up for the scale issue. At least they gave it a 2 Attack turret.

The HWK and A-wing have LFL's official dimensions. The only ship to be wildly off scale is the TIE silencer and who knows what happened there.

I believe i heard in an interview that the TIE silencer went through some changes after FFG was given extremely limited info on it and by that time it was to late, i also believe they said in 2.0 they are going to release it smaller so you will have 2x sizes of silencer going forward.

I cant remember where i heard any of this so it could just be my imagination.

It looked 16.5m to me (and on the forum where I saw it, I was told that it was roughly to that scale).

I did say that it was fanart, not official.

EDIT : apparently my memory's failing me - it didn't actually say that in the thread, and when I find the artist's page - it does say that they went with an extra-large version.

I read somewhere that instead of looking out of the window, when you pilot the ship, you have special goggles on which are connected to the ship sensors. Which is weird but make at least a little sense :-)

The real question is wether they will radicaly redesign it to represent the source better, or keep it familiar. I can see both sides, had a lot of fun working around the HWKs limitations, but for a ship that is supposed to run imperial blockades Falcon-style it was a tiny bit slow and lumbering.

I'd like it more if the beds weren't smaller than the chairs.

Can confirm, the HWK-290's visibility is fairly nonexistent, and Jan DOES pull up the goggles in that scene I linked.

There's likely footspace behind the ladder.

I always figured he goggles let her see through the ship and all around her. Pretty cool.

The HWK looks fast, and seems to get a shift on. Be nice if the dial reflected that rather than it having to match the Lambda like it did in it's original wave.

Except there isn't a scale issue at all. The ship is small.

As to the windows.. they could work if the ship engines pivoted and it flew similar to a firespray. But as there are hud goggles, it works for me.

True, but I was more referring to window placement than their actual visibility. If you look at the model in particular, the windows are too far forward to accommodate a living quarters style area in the nose. There would need to be a bit of a redesign on the HWK to get that deck plan to workout, but I think i’d be okay with that. It’s a cool redesign.

I’m with @Captain Lackwit on this. It looks like extra foot space can be behind the ladder.

<shrugs> maybe. Still doesn't look quiiiiiiite right to my eye.

I think we can all agree that, big or small, it's a really cool ship.

I'd just like it to be less limited.
