Spell Names

By Mogloth, in Genesys

I love the idea of the Genesys spell system (I have yet to actually play with them). But, to me, there is one thing that's missing - Spell Names.

This is where we all come in. I'm not trying to limit the Genesys system. Instead, what I am looking to see here is everyone's creativity when it comes to combining one or several added difficulties to a spell and give it a name.

Such as Fireball - Attack spell with Fire and Blast effects.

What spells can you all come up with?

Because, during a gaming session it's a whole lot funner to say that you are casting Fireball instead of saying, "I'm spending an action to use the attack spell option and adding the fire and blast qualities.

Burn and blast could also be used to describe an Acid Bubble bursting on your enemies. So much is in how you choose to describe it.

Mordecai's Magnificent Fizzlebiffer - Burn(acid) and Knockdown....

I have a player who requested to play a Witch Doctor. That's a really niche flavor of magic, so I'm doing my best to recreate it with Genesys' broad strokes approach. I had a couple of ideas for spells to start her off, like:

Insect Swarm: Attack spell + poisonous. This could just as easily be Melf's Acid Arrow or anything else, but trying to be thematic. Could be stepping into Conjure's territory, though.

Ice Serpent: Attack with ice and poisonous. A venomous ice serpent that wraps itself around you holding you in place and injecting you with it’s poison that freezes your insides!

ok not the most creative name but I am liking the imagery.

Oh, I'm pretty creative with this, but I don't some of them I just don't know how to translate to english, keeping the meaning. I like a lot Magic: the Gathering cause the game has a lot very creative names :D

Frost Bite : attack + Ice + Deadly

Buddha Palm : attack + Impact + Destrutive + Empowered

Meteor Strike : attack + Blast + Range x2 + Empowered

Catapult/Slingshot : attack + Range x1 + Manipulative

Dragon's Breath : attack + Fire + Destructive

Echobliteration : attack + Range 1x + Lightning

Water Form : augment + Swift

Heroic Inspiration : augment + Divine Health

Prismatic Shield : barrier + Add Defense

Summon Eidolon : conjure + Summon Ally + Grand Summon

Unlucky as my father : curse + Misfortune + Enervate

I think that's the job of each mage player. As @ESP77 said, is Attack + Burn + Blast a Fireball or an Acid Blast?

As a mage, I would come up with a "spellbook" in advance, and give them all fun names. Why have "Fireball" when it could be "Wiffledoom's Carnivorous Ant Explosion?"

From a feral Gnome Druid:

Preferred Spells:

Protector of the Burrow: You draw energy from the forest surrounding you, channeling it through your own body to strengthen your muscles and quicken your wits. The spirit of the forest responds and grants you it’s favour knowing your dedication to protecting all that dwell there.

2 Difficulty Augment Basic+Haste

Ferocity of the Honey Badger: With the guttural growl of a a honey badger you summon the feral spirits to aid you, your nails grow long and sharp, your nose elongates into a snout, grrr!

Hard Augment; Basic + Primal Fury.

Spider Companion: Calling to the forest for aid you’re smile grows wide as a Spider bigger than you descends from the canopy above, the horrified looks on your opponents reassures you that this day the forest will be safe.

Hard 3 Difficulty Conjure; Basic + Medium + Summon Ally

Hawk of Truths (often used in conjunction with Heroic Ability Sixth Sense to see the nearby area): You trill in the high pitched call of a bird of prey, almost at once a cry comes back in response as a Hawk circles far above.

Daunting Conjure; Basic + Ally + Range + Range

Grasping Vines: Grasping a pinch of soil from a pouch at your belt you throw it at your enemies, as you do a twisting green flow lashes out and wraps around them. With a sudden flourish roots and vines explode up out of the ground and wrap around their legs, constricting and holding them in place.

2+ Difficulty Attack; Basic + Ice + Range if necessary.

Wave of Earth: You stomp the ground sending a ripple through the earth that crashes into an opponent next to you.

Basic Attack + Impact + Close Combat

And these are from an Orc Shaman

Fury of Galmorak (Signature Spell): Grug begins chanting in deep guttural cries, stirring himself into a rage. As his blood races and his face darken his nails grow long and sharp like those of the feline predators of his homelands. Those who face him tremble at the sight and grow to fear his wrath.

Augment + Haste + Primal Fury.

Dranurars Stomp: With raised arms Grug cries out to the spirit of earth from which his great ancestors arose, calling for the earth to rise up and crush his foes.

Attack + Impact + Blast + Range.

Spirit of Death: Grug points his finger and bellows one long howling word of his ancient tongue “Yarrakarnor!!!” which translates loosely to “death comes for you”. A bolt of unearthly green lighting leaps from the young Orks outstretched finger and smashes into the skull of his foe.

Attack + Deadly + Range

Mengurrs Spirit: For once Grug whispers, muttering a low dirge of grunts and growls. With hands raised grasping his his staff above his head he conjures forth one of the many Ork animal spirits to run loose amongst his foes. The wild animal spirit attacks the nearest living being, drawn by its life force, trying to consume its spirit.

Conjure + Medium Summon + Range

It just occurred to me that Augment with swift and haste could be described narratively as flight.

Combine with primal fury and you tranform into a great eagle to defeat your enemies.

Exactly. I'm not trying to say that one combination of spell effects can only have one name. That would be boring and limited.

Spell effects with names as some have presented here are a great help to people like me who lack the creativity and imagination to create cool spells.

Wave of Earth above from @Richardbuxton sounds fabulous.

I began to wonder what a 200+ xp Elf Storm Sorcerer would look like, needless to say it’s scary what you can do, Paragon Heroic Ability is particularly awesome for a spell caster, it really makes things easier to both cast but also to get extra Advantage. Anyway I also decided to develop her Signature Spell, oh wow is it a beast, but I also came up with an extensive list of other spells she knows:

Nora’s Icy Finger of Death:

The storm sorceress raises an outstretched arm to point her long slender finger at a nearby enemy. A chilling blizzard encircles her outstretched arm, swirling around her faster and faster. With a blinding blue flash the entire blizzard coalesces into a single icy beam that slices into her target, freezing flesh to ice wherever it touches, driving them back.

Attack Basic, Ice, Manipulate, Range, Empowered, Destructive, Deadly.

An Average Spell at Medium Range with a “Tome of Empowered and Deadly” and the Talents Improved Signature Spell, Favour of the Fae, and Chill of Nordros.

Damage 8 + Success, Crit 2, Vicious 4, Pierce 4, Ensnare 4, Sunder, Range Medium

Chill Wind of Anshilanda Peak:

The Storm Sorcerer cups her hands and blows a deep breath out and towards her enemies. It unnaturally builds in momentum, at first rippling cloaks but quickly strengthening to match the strongest storms of the mountain peak from which it gets its name.

Attack + Ice + Manipulate + Range + Range

Eye of the Storm:

With a twist of her out thrust hand the Storm Sorcerer drags a tornado down from the sky on top of herself the raging winds blasting around her deflect arrows and lead swords astray. Yet somehow she remains untouched and safe.

Barrier + Add Defence

Nights Chill:

The Sorcerer turns her hand to face palm up whilst chanting words of power, a blue flame leaps from her hand and begins drawing warmth from the air around it. The temperature around the Sorcerer plummets, but before it reaches freezing she throws the enchanted flame at her enemy. The crackling blue engulfs the target, extracting all the warmth the body contains, snap freezing them where they stand.

Curse + Paralysed. (Best cast with a Tome of Paralyse)

Lightning Orb

A ball of crackling Lightning appears above the Sorcerer, casting an eerie blue white glow of the area around her, driving back the darkness.

Utility Spell

Midst of Finraths Deception:

Whispering gently, a dense fog slowly rises from the ground, enveloping the whole nearby area, hiding those inside from any prying eyes.

Summon + Range + Grand Summon

Storm Eagle:

The Storm Sorcerer makes a violent slash through the air with her staff, tearing a hole in reality big enough for an enormous snow white eagle to soar through. It lands softly next to the caster and lowers its head, ready for her to mount.

Summon + Grand Summon + Summon Ally

Knight of the Winters Frost:

Sparkling blue ice crystals grow across the chest and arms of the Storm Sorcerer, building up a layer of thick protection. In one hand a thin sword of ice rapidly grows to be over a meter long, in the other a disc of clear ice spreads out to form a large shield. (The armour has the same stats as a suit of Elven Chainmail, the weapons are a Large Shield and an Elven Sword)

Summon + Additional Summon + Medium Summon.

Outstanding!

So @Richardbuxton ‘s examples have me inspired.

I’ve been playing around with the Primalist as a monk. Not casting spells so much as focusing chi.

Unfettered Warrior

You focus your chi inwards and assumes a relaxed fighting stance. Your bones are hard as steel. Countless hours of training have left you with a preternatural awareness and reaction speed. You dance through the broken ground of the battlefield, unslowed, while the grasping hands of your opponents cannot hold you.

Augment + Haste + Swift + Primal Fury

Mountain Strike

Wood, stone, and steel are no match for you. Your blows can crush weapons and armor as easily as flesh and bone.

Attack + Close Combat + Destructive

Death Touch

Your blows send destructive reverberations through your opponents causing massive internal damage.

Attack + Close Combat + Deadly + Empowered

(Edit: name change) Surge Fist (Hadouken!)

You are able to extend your chi outward from your body to strike your opponents at a distance, catching them off balance.

Attack + Impact

Edited by ESP77

In thinking of Dragon Age Inquisition magic - would something like Veil Strike, at it's base, be just an attack action?

Veil Strike - You recreate your own fist from the essence of the Fade and smash nearby foes to the ground.

I guess based on that description you could have Impact as well.

I'm usually not good at the imagination part of free form spell casting.
