Gand and Janwuine-Jika

By GandofGand, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Has anyone ever run a Gand Janwuine-Jika Ceremony in-game? I can find tons of references online but no actual description.

I play a Gand in our living "Fires Across the Galaxy" and we just completed our second season finale Big Battle Interactive (The Battle of Dac/Mon Cala) and Gand of Gand was observed by Ruetsavii and determined to have passed the requirments and then some so is illegible to become Janwuine. I wanted to write up the ceremony for background purposes but was hoping to save time if someone had already done one.

From what I can tell, there’s no specific description for Janwuine-Jika. Not for this game and not in general. So, that means you have creative liberties to make up what you want. Just make sure someone like Cracken would find it “unsettling.”

You potential will be unmatched by any being in the universe. Truly a man alone! A solitary individual who answers to no one! And they shall bestow upon you a new name: one befitting of your greatness!

Oh I'm keeping that firmly in mind, there will be blood...8D

I'll post up the details when I've got it done up. Right now I need to work on a name.

I wonder how many Gand from Gand named Gand speak Gand to another Gand from Gand named Gand...

On my way to the planet Gand, I met a Gand named Gand from the planet Gand. With this Gand I spoke of Gand in Gand, and of his travels from Gand...

This is just begging to be a limerick.

You broke the streak of all Gand profile pictures!

Anyway:

There once was a Gand named Gand

He spoke Gand to a Gand named Gand

They lived on Gand

And met a grand Gand

Who actually wasn’t named Gand

Apologies, Shukkla does not understand.

When Qeeg Shukkla Gand is confident of himself, he refers to himself as Qeeg, his prename. When his confidence is shaken, Qeeg refers to himself as Shukkla, his name. And when he is ashamed or deeply UN-confident, he refers to himself as Gand.

As Qeeg is sure Gand of Gand is aware, this (or a close approximation of this) is the Gand cultural norm (but the Non-Gand readers may not understand this.)

So, Qeeg's question for Gand of Gand is :

If Gands' name is "Gand of Gand", did Gand choose to NOT take a name or a prename and remain simply Gand, as he had been known since spawning? So he is simply Gand, from Gand (or Gand of Gand)?

Did Gand choose the name Gand, so he is Gand Gand, of Gand? (or possibly even Gand Gand Gand, of Gand?)

Or, does Gand of Gand actually have a name and a prename, but has incredibly low self confidence?

add last line.

Remember that most Gand are simply known as Gand. As I understand it:

They We are called Gand by default.

Individuals who have performed exceptional acts can be called by their last name.

An individual who performs another may then choose a first name.

As such, Gand of Gand is a perfectly normal name. It is not a choice to not have a name; it is a result of not being spectacular.

Indeed, Gand stands corrected. Being young, unproven or lacking in accomplishments would result in an individual merely being called Gand.

However, it then seems unlikely that such an unstoried individual would be considered eligible for Janwuine-Jika status, the highest honour (that we tell outsiders about) a Gand can attain, without being accomplished enough to gain at least one name first.

It's certainly possible, but the accomplishment required to skip two entire names and go directly from "Gand" to "I" would have to be truly monumental. This Gand would very much like to hear the story of such an accomplishment retold!

The original Gand stated he was eligible for Janwuine-Jika status, so Qeeg assumed he had *some* accomplishments worthy of a name.

Gand’s point is true. It’s also possible that “Gand of Gand” could be referring to species and homeworld, not name and homeworld.

So I finally wrote up MY version of the ceremony; its specific to my character but it can be generalized for other Gand.

Star Wars: Gand and the Janwuine-Jika

“Telling of Deeds”

The Ceremony takes place in an open-air observation ring (Breathing-Masks are provided for the Guests that don’t already have their own.). The first part of the Ceremony is simple; the Gand Ruetsavii (Elder-Observers) who observed Gand’s actions at the battle of Dac, as well as before, and after step forward and recount their observations and offer their reasons as to why they decided to accepting Gand into the Janwuine-Jika. Then Gand’s family and Hinwuine guests (The invited non-Gand.) will each have an opportunity to recount their own stories and observations. During this time Gand is dressed in a simple ceremonial robe.

(Players are invited to write their own comments in below.).

“Shedding the Old”

NOTE: Before this part of the ceremony begins the Eldest speaker will caution the Hinuwine guest not to interfere with the next part…under any circumstances.

When the stories are completed Gand will disrobe to stand naked before the observers on a small raised platform; a dais covered with ancient and disturbingstains (Note that Gand sexual organs are internal; nothing to see). Three more Gand, also stripped to simple loincloths, will appear shortly; each bearing a nasty-looking hook-bladed knife with a skinning hook cut-out. They begin to make deep cuts around the joints and folds of Gands exoskeleton; the blades are obviously far sharper than their appearance would initially suggest; rivulets of green blood quickly begin to flow across and down Gand’s flesh, dripping onto. Just when it appears the cutters are finished with their part, they flip the blades over, insert the skinning-hook and begin to systematically and efficiently peel away the pieces of his exoskeleton, down to the smallest finger; only the actual joints are left alone.

While this horrific ritual proceeds an Elder Gand describes what is happening:

“When Gand first awakens they only know Gand; their family, their people and their home. As they grown and learn their place in the Way all they experience becomes part of their self, part of their identity and part of their people. When Gand become Januwine they must lose their past; strip away all that they were so they can become something more; so they can become their truest self. Here the loss of the First Flesh is the herald of their rebirth, the rising of their new and whole self; their becoming.”

Those who are closest to Gand or have some additional experience with Gand culture have long since learned to interpret his expression even without his voice, primarily through the occasional twitching of the long tentacles hanging below his mouth. Judging by their current state of constant quivering and occasional lashing at the air, it is obvious this ceremonial removal of his exoskeleton is causing Gand an excruciating amount of pain. When the last pieces of exoskeleton are remove Gand standsonce more; now truly naked to the elements, but even still observers can see another layer of skin has been exposed; currently soft and supple as any newborns flesh, but one can presume it will quickly start hardening into a new exoskeletal layer. More words are spoken as a new trio of Gand, these dressed in simple robes, appear hold small bowls of a foul-smelling pasty substance. They smear the thick poultice over his still-raw flesh and its effects as a pain-reliever is evident as Gand quickly begins to calm down as the mixture soothes his tortured flesh.

“The Waters of Life”

As the final part of the Ceremony; Gand picks up his bow and a quiver of arrows then ventures alone into the Mists to hunt one of the most dangerous prey on Gand; the Greater Myst-Wyrm. He is followed discretely by several camera-drones that play the live-feed to several large displays in the observation area for those who wish to watch to do so.

The hunt itself is almost anti-climatic; despite the recent abuse of his flesh Gand is an accomplished Hunter and closely tied to the Way. Through a combination of traps made from natural materials, pin-point accuracy with his shots and a display of speed and mobility that would put many galaxy-class athletes to shame, he lures the 50-meter Wyrm into a dead-end canyon so deep it cannot find an fast escape. In a final burst of activity Gand ends its life with a final shot, sinking an arrow to the fletching in one of its half-dozen eyes. Its death-roar can be heard back at the observation ring.

Gand returns shortly thereafter and several others Gand are sent out with a heavy-lift cargo-speeder to gather up the Wyrms corpse and bring it back to the Ring. Its blood is then drained into a large stone cauldron, one easily big enough to hold several Gand while the rest of the Wyrms remains are quickly and efficiently rendered down to its skeleton. No part of the beast goes to waste and even the bones are broken down and carted off for later use. Once the remains of the Wyrm are finally removed from sight, Gand descends into the cauldron of still-warm blood, eventually ducking his head beneath the surface for several long minutes before finally emerging to stand once more in the ceremonial circle.

The Elder steps out and speaks once more,

“Your Deeds have been Spoken, you have Shed your Old flesh and have Cleansed yourself in the Waters of Life. You who were once Gand of the Alliance; stand before us as Janwuine-Jika; you are now reborn…you know now who you are…tell us, your Name.”

The formerly nameless Gand raises his head and squares his shoulde then speaks in a loud and clear voice,

“I am Ish’Khandar Vhexx’im; the Hunter of Shadow and the Enemy of the Empire…”

There is a round of polite applause and what passes for cheering from the assembled Gand as the newly-reborn Ish’Khandar is washed clean of blood and has the ceremonial robes draped once more over his shoulders.

When he is clothed once more he steps off the platofmr and a great feast is begun, dominated by a variety of dished made primarily from the flesh of the defeated Myst-Wyrm.

Note; Ish’Khandar will let his Hinuwine friends know which dishes are safe for them to eat.

Final Note; for those Linguist-types, due to the ingrained politeness of the Gand the “Vhexx” appellation more accurately translates to “Botherer” but “Imperial Bother” isn’t quite so intimidating…

This Gand is greatly impressed with Ish’Khandar Vhexx’im's description.

The final section should reflect the achievements the individual Gand has previously made. A Pilot should not be expected to hunt, a hunter would not be expected to pilot etc.

Shedding one's past seems counter to the quest for names and glory that we strive for. It is Gand's past that has brought him here, that has earned him his name. However, the removal of the entire Exo-Skeleton as part of a ritual rebirth is *inspired*.

add name

Thirty greased jawas with vibro axes in a fight pit with you. Now GO...

I intended to write this as inspiration for others to jump off of.

Obviously different Gand would have different challenges; Ish'Khandar is a Seeker; Executioner/Pathfinder so a Hunting challenge was appropriate.

I figured the Shedding of the Skin representing a shedding of the past worked out, I suppose I could have added a segment about building on the past.

The literal removal of the exoskeleton kind of made sense but was also done based on a mention on Wookiepedia (Legends) that talks about Airen Cracken witnessing the ceremony and being "disturbed" by part of it so I had to think of what could possibly be done that would make make such a hardened warrior disgusted...I think I achieved that...8)
