Gencon

Was there a lot of people interested in GenCon who were unable to get a spot?

Since this is my first Gen Con, I will be more walking around than wanting to play so not this year for me.

I would've been one if @geek19 hadn't grabbed me a ticket. Just got my Saturday badge this morning.

I am not as upset about it as I was yesterday when I realized they'd sold out. GenCon limited events to 40 people, max, and it's hard to see if there's interest from 80 people. Maybe 2x 32's or something...

Me.

But I also don’t have travel auth yet

sadly I couldn't get off work or I'm sure I would have been peeved.

I’m just more steamed with my inability to travel easily to the US, I will never legitimately see a Leia or Sato alt art on my collection.

i have no way of getting them.

theyll eventually do the same with a Garmmand that’ll be the end of me.

I would be one of those people.

Keep checking - I managed to get a seat this afternoon. Maybe someone dropped out.

Me. I really wanted to go. Sucks for Gencon, as without a shot at that event I'm not going at all. I have a whole crew that drives or from Ohio I was going to go with.

This is what I hate about their prize system. It's not just a prize, it's an exclusive. I wish they would just publish then for purchase in end of year packages. I could really use the acrylic for my part.

If I learned one thing at Worlds it's that no-shows are pretty likely. I am certainly not guaranteeing anything, but it might be worth going anyway.

They do eventually show up on the prize walls at various tournaments and worlds. Granted, it's not easy to make those events either. If you know someone who's going, you can always ask them to keep their eyes open.

No, because these days, you can only earn the one for yourself. Gone are the days where you got multiple copies...

I think what @rasproteus is saying is you'll find these sorts of "exclusive" promos available later on at other higher-tiered FFG events (like Adepticon, for example, or Worlds) and if you have a friend going to something like that, they might be able to snag one for you.

Failing that, there's always eBay...

Yeah, that’s the intent. And it still blows.

Ive gone 3 days without a proper meal because my next payday is Thursday.

there is no eBay.

its just frustrating because it’s US centric. Yet again.

And even when it’s Canadian, it’s... east coast Canadian...

And I know I’m the odd complainer here... the system works well enough for everyone else.

i just have crappy dice luck, and crappy luck in getting these things...

so ive given up.

I mean, case in point - the one friend who went to worlds, because 5 others were denied, has to try to prioritize people to get stuff for.

And GenCon sold out before any of us could register, or in my case, hear back from the US Govt.

so I have no “friends” in this regard.

I loved how they included the Workds card in the following store champ kit previously. That at least gave me hope.

I wanted to play at Gencon - but I'm gonna be working for the Flight Crew so doubt I'll have time to play - didn't bother signing up for anything since I"m unsure what my schedule is looking like just yet.

Might bring an armada list or 2 in case some folks want to get a casual game in outside of official events though!

Herm... The rest of your complaint I can at least empathize with, but there really is no valid complaint here. Gencon badges have been on sale for months, and the last I knew, you didn't need a visa to visit the US from Canada, but even if you did, you had months to prepare that. As for the actual ticket, I totally forgot about buying one when they went on sale at 1pm, and didn't get around to it until 8pm or so, where there were still a dozen or so tickets remaining. So unlike worlds 2016 or earlier (where they sold out in minutes) or worlds 2017 (where you had to win a lottery), there's really no excuse to fail to get a gencon Armada ticket if you were really interested and motivated.

But as others have said, I would fully expect there to be drops. I would still bring your Armada stuff, and I would rope of Saturday for playing Armada. I know in XWM that some people buy 2 tickets because they can, and that way when their friend complains about not getting one, they have an extra one for him. Which means that the ticket goes to waste when all of their friends got them. There are also the folks who'll be cross playing numerous games and have day 2 events going on during Armada's playtime that won't show up for it. I would be very surprised to see all 40 people show up (which to be fair, I was already very surprised to see they capped it at 40).

I think that @Drasnighta has some unique circumstances regarding travel to the US.

It's true that registration has been open for quite some time, but people probably missed it until the prize support was announced the other day.

I briefly considered creating my own Armada event at GenCon when I couldn't get tickets to the tournament - GenCon capped the number of players at 40. I suspect that GenCon did not make an exception for Armada, and it's hard to say how much interest there would be in a two-heat 80-player event (organizing or participation).

Yeah, if I were Canadian this were not s probhlem.

if this were Obama’s America, this would not be a problem.

but this is where I am...

im stuck waiting on Immigration that would clear me for a 6 month window.... whenever and if they clear me.

I know there was also issues last year of having to book in flights and then finding after the fact armada was the first thing on the first day and thus, had friends miss the tournament by hours...
