Deck Building Help For New Player

By Shifty0519, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hello. So I am new to Destiny and fairly new to deck building games overall. I have bought a few of the starter packs plus around a dozen or so boosters. I'm just trying to put together 2 or 3 decks to play casually with friends and my wife.

My question is do you always build decks based around characters or sometimes around specific gear or supports? For instance even though my red characters aren't great, I have 2 copies of wingman, would it be worth it to still make a mono red deck?

Below are the characters I have so far. Any suggestions on pairings would be great.

Heroes:

Finn, Lando Calrissian (2), Rey (2), Luminara Unduli, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Master), Leia Organa

Villians:

Bala-Tik (2), Bossk (2), Boba Fett (2), Aurra Sing, Tusken Raider, Tie Pilot, Veteran Stormtrooper, Nute Gunray

Any help is appreciated.

Experimenting with deck building is big fun!

For the villains, I think eBala, Tie Pilot and Vet Stormtrooper would work together nicely with range damage. Bala will likely get targeted first for his two dice. Then you will still be able to play wingman on the trooper or tie pilot.

I know with mtg there is a recommended number of land, creature, instant, etc. Is that the same with this game? How many upgrades, supports, events should there be in a deck on average?

There’s not a set formula really for the game. Ideally you want to start with four dice, that’s the biggest thing. Three dice to start just don’t compete well today, even big guys like Vader and Luke.

In the deck, most I see have between 8 and 14 dice giving cards. Whether they be upgrades or supports doesn’t really matter. Some quick, aggro things may want more. Some control may be less, but you’ll typically end up there with 16 to 20 events.

The cost curve is more important to deck building. Many new players go for expensive upgrades first. It’s important to keep the number of these down unless you dedicate a lot of the deck to resources. Two cost upgrades are the starting point as they can always be overwritten by a higher cost one for the cost difference. So, I’d always suggest at least a two to one two cost vs higher ratio.

So if 4 starting dice is recommended that limits my options. Looks like I need more boosters!

Buy singles, many rare cards won't be a terrible expense.

When we draft the problem is many of them don't go to a good home as we already have what we want. So we end up fighting over who gets them rather than who misses out. ?

What's a good site for singles? Also, any recommendations to go with characters I already have?

To purchase singles, I'd check out the price guide here:

To figure out your best character pairings, I like this site:

Just click on Team Builder and you can see all kinds of pairings. Hope that helps. Enjoy!

Thanks for the help!

If you our using the second version of Rey (two player game) then her elite with Obi Wan is good (Team Covenant used it for their advanced deck building guide, and it is a deck I run myself) even though it doesn't have 4 dice.

If you are using the first version of Rey (awakenings) her elite with an elite Lando Calrissian wouldn't be bad but it depends on how many upgrades you have in your collection
