X-Wing 2.0 Storage Solutions

By Herowannabe, in X-Wing

So, I'm about to end up with a big batch of new dials and cardboard bases (surprise surprise), and so I'm thinking of redoing my storage. Right now I have all my ship and upgrade cards in a binder, with the ships, dials, stands, and bases all together in individual compartments in my storage containers, but I think it's time to break things up.

Pilot and ship cards still go in the binder, obviously.

Ships go in the storage compartments (possibly inside some micro-hangars... not sure yet if I want to go that route)

plastic stands/bases will go in their own compartments, separate from the ships, and I'll grab them as needed.

Cardboard bases: Does anyone know of any plastic sheets that would make for easy storage of the bases inside a binder? If I can find something that works, that's what I'd like to do- store the ship cards and bases together. Any suggestions there?

Dials: will probably go in the same compartments as their respective ships, to make finding them easy. Unless I can think of a good system for labeling dials to make it easy to find the ones I need.

So that's what I'm thinking for me. Feel free to use this thread to discuss your own X-Wing 2.0 storage solutions/questions. :)

Trying to decide whether to go to the plastic dial covers to reduce the volume of dials.

Otherwise I'm sticking to my existing Plano solutions and just swapping cardboard.

In some of the earlier storage solution threads, one of the suggestions for the cardboard bases was to use the plastic sleeves that coin collectors use for coins. Check out these two threads: coin slot pages.. and Cool Take on Dial Holders and Pilot Token Holders

And if you want to DIY, the 1.0 cardboard bases measure 1.75" x 1.5" x .125" (two of them fit in .25" of space) while the 1.0 dials measure 2" x 2" x .25".

measurements are for 1.0, I have no idea on 2.0

I can’t really make any decisions until I actually have some of the new dials and medium bases in hand.

Waiting for the day when I can get a (possibly) slightly larger movement dial and on the back is the selectable list of pilots.

or the other way around, where each pilot card has the movement dial listed on the back

For the large cardboard look at Staples or Office Max for sheets that hold CDs if they still make them. For the dials, look under coin supplies. They make sheets that are a snap together clam shell. Not sure of the exact size.

Thanks, I’ll check into the CD- sheets.

I’ve been searching online for the clamshell type coin sheets big enough to fit the dials, but I can’t find any place that is selling them (except for one that won’t ship to the US).

I did however find these, which if my math is correct should fit the medium bases: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AFK4N12/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1525790278&sr=8-11&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=12-pocket+page

I think with the conversion kits coming with 30+ dials each I'm going to look at covers this go round. Dials take up so much space when assembled. This just seems like a natural time to cut down on space. I think in general storage is going to be easier in 2.0. There's going to be a lot less upgrade cards with so many things already baked into the ship card.

One of the guys at the FLGS uses the clam shells. I'll ask where he got them. At the very least I'll get a manufacturer for you.

Another thought. The plastic pages designed to hold the 3.5"floppy disks work for the large ship bases. Find an old geek and he might have some on hand.

It'll have to wait until I get home to get details, but I currently have almost everything in a binder. I believe I'm using a 20 slot (4x5) coin sleeve for both the dials and the small base ship inserts. The only "complaint" with them is that the ship chit for the dial (I store them unassembled and put them in upgrade kits as needed) doesn't particularly like to stay in with the dial. I think come 2.0 I might move those into the microhangars with the ships though.

For the pilot cards, I obviously use standard 3x3 binder pages, and I use the 4x4 mini cards for the upgrades, though those are soon to be obsolete. For the large bases, it's a bit trickier. I couldn't find anything that really worked, but I DIY'd a solution. I bought 1x3 dollar bill sleeves, and used my soldering pen to melt the plastic to size to end up with a 2.5x3 (two sleeves properly sized for large bases, and one midget sleeve in between, though it is large enough for the Shadowcaster's mobile arc indicator). This is far from a perfect solution as if you melt it too much it'll break, and not enough it won't stay. But in the 2 years or so since I did this, I've only had one give way (though I did trash a couple when I started).

Finally, I use a pencil pouch for my maneuver templates. Couple all of this with divider pages, and it's super simple (and compact) to put together a list. My binder is then coupled with one of those black/yellow Stanley boxes that have all of my ships in microhangars, a few token cases for the tokens, and then the obstacles, bombs, damage deck, and dial upgrades. With a hook on the front of it for the binder (which closes and has a carrying handle on the spine), I can grab my entire fleet in one hand.

Wow, your set up sounds fantastic! Can you post some pics when you get a chance?

as for the small bases, I posted this in the other thread, but it looks (citation needed) like these will hold them lot better than the 20-pocket sheets: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01G3I8UYU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525753201&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=30-pocket+coin+page&dpPl=1&dpID=41HzdVbqMhL&ref=plSrch

I tried binders for cards, dials and the base "chits" but just found it a massive PITA. I was getting expansions just often enough that I was enternally shuffling cards around. The dials and chits would slide out of the sleeves and it all added up to a very fat binder. Just settled on a Plano tackle box that I stored all chits, dials, pilot and unique upgrade cards in their own specific smaller organizer. 3 x those in the middle of the tackle box. Side storage for all of the various tokens, markers, ect. Then the top held another multi compartment box that I stuck EPT, upgrades, munitions, ect in for easy sorting. It had space to stuff a bunch of ships in the top as well. It was a bit bulky but made tear down and adding new expansions a lot easier than sorting through binders.

If anyone wants to know, Sounds like a Plano 732

I use 2 of them for my collection.

Unfortunately, it looks like the new dials are not going to fit as nicely as the old ones did.

Guess that's all the more reason to move towards the plastic holders and just keeping the maneuver faces. I was on the fence with my old collection. But now it's a chance to start anew.

I store my ship bases in the same binder as my pilot cards. I slide the base tokens in on top of the pilot cards, so they are held firmly in place. I have my own sorting system that is mostly based on which generic pilots are on the opposite side of the unique pilot tokens, so it is easy to set up and put away efficiently without hunting for tokens. If there aren't enough pilot cards stacked in a slot to hold the tokens as firmly in place as I like, I just back them with cheap playing cards (or usually my old Decipher SWCCG cards).

The pages I use are side loading, I think the brand is called Pokefits. They are pretty tight so things can't fall out easily, and I keep my binders in a small carrying bag so that if things fall out they'll just end up in there, but that has never happened so far. I've also got coin pages that hold the dials, and upgrade cards doubled up (will be a non-issue with full sized 2.0 upgrade cards)

Alright, I got the pictures of my setup.

So the ships, bases, pegs, obstacles, tokens, dice, bombs, and dial upgrades, they're all stored in a stanley box. I have 2, one for Rebels, and one for everything else. I believe my Rebels collection consists of

4 X wings

4 Y wings

5 A wings

2 YT1300 (one shown as thr other is on the workbench, but they both fit)

3 B wings

1 HWK

2 E wings

4 Z95

1 YT2400

1 K wing

2 VCX-100

2 Attack Shuttles

3 T-70 X wings

2 ARC-170

1 U Wing

1 Auzituck

1 Sheathipede

(am I missing any ship releases in this list? I have at least 1 of everything)

All of this fits in here, though it's getting quite full with the double falcon and ghost models - I might cut back to just one of each if I run out of space. I do still have room to expand though, especially with fighter sized ships. Though let it be known that this wouldn't be possible without tuck boxes. Those things are awesome. Thanks @SirWillibald !

To go along with separating my rebels from everything else, I have a second binder for imps/scum pilots and ship cardboard. But only the primary Rebel binder has my templates and upgrade cards. They both then have pilots, dials, small cardboard inserts, and custom made large cardboard inserts.

As I said in my original post, for 2.0, I think I'm going to put the dial chit with the ship in the tuck box. I think this should work for every ship, the only possible exception being the A wing. That should resolve the #1 complaint I have regarding the chit falling out of the dial sleeve. I will have to label each ship dial, though i already did that for my 1.0 dials (in bright orange paint).

Otherwise, I plan on getting a new binder, though probably the same design (that way I can leave v1.0 alone for legacy reasons). The only new thing seems to be the mobile arc chit, which can go with the dial chit in each ship, and the medium bases... I'll have to experiment with those to see what I can do, they may fit in normal card sleeves.

One thing I would add to this is that I used to use a specific card binder for the upgrade cards. The issue with that was each time a new wave was released, I basically had to redo everything. In this system, I can easily add a new page, and so I probably only need to redo specific upgrade sections, and only to put them back in cost -> alphabetical order.

I currently have my entire collection stored in two of these stanley bin organisers (actually I'm using an identical knockoff) and one Bosch Drill case that I've filled with foam. Very cheap and effective, and on game nights I can just swap out the bins I need to that I can bring the relevant ships, dials, templates and tokens all in one stanley case.

However, these cases are just a tiny bit too large to fit in my backpack which makes it a hassle when I just want to carry a small amount of gear (eg to work). Does anyone know of a smaller organiser that takes the same bins? I'd need it to fit my range rulers and templates too somehow. I was considering using my core set box and moving the tokens to plastic baggies, but I can't fit a decimator or a shadowcaster in there and it has that darn hole in the lid

Edit: something like this might work, but it could be just a tad too small

Tested the guy at the FLGS. The clam shells are from a company called Encap and are available from Amazon. Current dials use the 40/41 mm size. Not sure if the new ones will be the same.

This looks almost exactly what I make out of the dollar bill sheets I use. The big difference is the price. I bought 100 for $20 or so. Given I don't really need 100 of them, but I have enough for anyone that I like who wants to do a similar storage system as me.
