Convert your entire collection with 3 or less conversion kits.

By DiggityDug, in X-Wing

Here are the easy steps for you all to follow.

  • Buy one conversion kit for each faction you play.
  • Take the ship dials and counters for the ships you need more of and put them in a ziplock bag.
  • Go to your local copy shop / kinkos / office depot.
  • Put them face down on the color copier tray.
  • Hit "Copy"
  • While you are there pick up a glue stick
  • Take your copies home, cut them out like a kindergartner, and glue them to the top of the dials/ship counters you already have.....
  • Play The Game.

Thats it....

You have already bought all this cardboard. Your buying the conversion Kits. It would take you like one afternoon to do it. I mean its so dang obvious I dont understand why people are freaking out about it. Ok, possibly there could be a few cards you need duplicates of for tournaments and then you can decide to buy a second kit. but for the vast majority of players its just this simple.

Your logic and rational thoughts, they’ll have to wait outside.

I mean what are people going to do with their STACKS OF OLD Dials? Play poker? This way you have more money, help the environment, and don't run around flailing your arms like Kermit the Frog. I think some people just like to be panicked.

Now its even quite possible that Fantasy Flight could release a .pdf conversion kit people could print at home on a color printer and use it themselves. Of course, its always possible that some industrial person on the internet could make a .pdf on their own.

I honestly wouldn't even mind if people would do that.

There is your mistake. If I don't care about tournament legality, I don't need to buy any conversion kits. The local community is creating better alt art designs than FFG anyway and digital printing at the local copy ship is giving me better paper as well (Synthetic paper does not need card sleeves and is washable, furthermore it has a better gloss and contrast as well). I can get 9 cards per page, so for 180 upgrade cards I am paying about €20 at the local copy store. Or I order a custom set of 400 cards for like $100 from MakePlayingCards.com, all plastic, all glossy, front and back individual designs, CMYK printing.
FI_8266_1.jpg Adding dials is just printing the new dials and glueing them into the old dials I already have ... or just using one of the many dial apps for my smartphone/tablet.

Heck, I can just don't get any cards at all and just print out my lists or bring them on a tablet and use the same tablet for dials. Conversion costs with this ZERO dollars. It's still not tournament legal, just like your plan to self-print missing dials and cards. Though it certainly is pretty cool for alternative art card projects.

Speaking of that, I am sure that we will get new 3rd party templates and damage decks as well. All Wings will making for sure custom damage decks for 2.0 as well :D

Well... it'd actually be 5 or less conversion kits, since First Order and Resistance come with wave 2.

*Mandatory push glasses up*

But anyways, this is still a good workaround for those who don't want to buy multiple of the same conversion kits just to cover the few extra ships they have that won't have cardboard pieces.

The only problem with this will come down to having enough generic ship cards and bases to run all of them.

It's important to give Kinko's money for their work making the games we love.

I'll undoubtedly be making alt arts for locals

But I don't really know how you'd make the bases outside of the methods outlined here

And of you need ANYTHING from the conversion kit, IT'S THE GODDN BASES

You can't reinforce/crackshot or other bullseye only stuff/mobile arc without the new dang base, which isn't even touching medium bases

Also probably need the mobile arc indicators

/pushes up glasses Actually, Kinko's has been sold to Fed Ex and now is known as FedEx Office so they aren't really getting the money either.

I would love to see FFG support a print at home conversion kit in some fashion which would not necessarily be tournament legal but would help people get over the hump of needing that third or fourth xwing or awing or whatever.

I already purchased ALL THESE THINGS from Fantasy Flight.. Im just reusing the THINGS I ALREADY PURCHASED. I just asked my Stack of cardboard dials, cards, upgrades, and pilots, and they don't have a great deal of sympathy.

Thats why I am going to buy one conversion kit, to get the bases. But after that, its 100% photocopy and glue for me!

Um... did you read the first post? Just photocopy and cut and glue where needed.

If you ever need to go to a tournament just borrow the necessary extra components from a friend.

Can't you just print the bases as well? They won't be as thick as the cardboard, but does it matter?

I gather you missed the part about the kinkos and the glue sticks. Would work for bases (and cards) too.

Its a nice idea but I'm betting it won't be tournament legal.

How can it not be tournament legal? Your gluing them to Fantasy Flight bases that were legitimately purchased. Also how many tournament organizers are going to say "Um can you take apart your dials so I can check to see if they are photocopied?" if your really worried for tournaments buy some dial covers.

Because they can just say it isn't. That's always been the rule with photocopied materials.

Uh... you’re joking right? There’s no way it would be legal. Too much potential for mistakes and/or shenanigans, especially with the arcs on the bases.

Dont get me wrong, it’s a fantastic idea for casual play, and I’ll almost definitely be doing it myself, but for official events I’d plan on borrowing the needed extra components from a friend.

I’m planning to buy each conversion kit, get the parts out I need then post the unneeded parts here to trade for parts I need.

I already know I’ll need an extra A-Wing set and Tie Bomber set and I know I’ll have quite a bit of Scum stuff extra. I’m sure someone will be willing to trade.

It's just a big Kinko's cash grab.

Because that’s not how FFG says to use them, and they make the tournament rules. Allowing photocopied components in tournament play is a quick route to x-wing not selling and there being no x-Wing tournaments to go to. In that case, you won’t have to worry about what’s legal and what’s not.

So the bases are a square, with the arcs from the middle to the corner. I don't know what kind of shenanigans could happen there, other than someone photoshoping fake arcs onto a base. But if there are any dirty cheaters like that out there they are already doing it and they will be quickly called out.

** I remember a certain someone in a very important tournament that was caught "thumbing" his dial on tournament video.**

I think dials and bases would be near impossible to "cheat" with.

Also I have been to exactly zero tournaments. Its possible I don't like the pressure. Its also possible im not that good. Its highly probable im ok with myself. So here is an idea... photocopy your stuff. Glue it down.. play casual, and if and only if you go to a tournament, then you can cash up.

I think those people who are big into tournaments, are probably NOT the ones that are upset about having to spend money. I sold my Palpatine card on ebay for $70 when it was hot. Now its not worth diddly poo.
