This will be my first time using a shade. I'm using Citadel Nuln oil.

Should I prime them white, detail black and touch up white, then shade. Or should I prime black, then white and touch up black and then shade? What way would be brighter? But I still want them to have a gritty look.

Well, what are you shading?

It sounds like you're doing stormtroopers?

If so, and you want to use shade do the following:

Paint the bodysuit, gloves, and eyes with black or dark grey (don't forget the stormtrooper unibrow and the spots on the back of the helmet)

Then you wash. I'd recommend they you thin the wash, up to 50% with medium if you're not going to greyline them (a method of painting them without washing)

The wash will do the detailing for you for the most part.

Then you highlight the brighter parts

Here's three videos on painting stormtroopers that give three different methods of painting them. I've used all three and each has their pros and cons. The primary difference in the method is how much highlighting you want to do vs. how much small detail work you want to do. If you have enough units try them all out and see which ones you like.

When I said detailing I meant touching up around eyes, ect. I want to let the wash do the detailing.
