Assault on Picutorion (Ep I)

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing Epic Play

Episode I: Assault on Picutorion

Mission 1 of 6 in the Kwymar Suppressions Campaign

The Imperials have arrived to conquer Picutorion. In accordance with the Tarkin Doctrine, the Imperial want to cut off Lothal’s ability to effectively communicate with the outside galaxy. To this end, they must destroy its communications network. The Picutorion Planetary Defense Force has mustered what ships they can to repel the attack.

List Building:

Each player brings a 300 point list. The Rebels are limited to 2 chassis: the venerable Z-95 (the Planetary Defense Force) and Outer Rim Smugglers in the YT-1300 (civilians willing to throw in what help they can). Expecting an easy victory, the Empire sends only the stalwart TIE Fighter and the Lambda Shuttle.

No one has any Asset Tokens yet, so there is no way to influence the engagement.

Set Up:

6x3 play area. Players deploy along the long ends of the board. Players begin by placing 6 Asteroids as usual. Once the asteroids are placed, the Rebel player then deploys all 12 satellite tokens (from the Basic Sets). Satellite tokens must be Range 1 from any table edge and Range 2 from each other.

Play:

Play is as typical, with the following in game special effects:

Satellites have 2 Hull and 1 Shield. They have 0 Agility and no attack (but gain an Evade die for Range 3 or Obstructed attacks). They can be Target Locked. They do not count as obstacles. Treat a critical hit as 2 damage. In addition, if a Rebel ship is with Range 1 of a Satellite that is hit, that pilot may choose to suffer one of the hits or critical hits instead of the satellite. Multiple ships within Range 1 of a satellite may distribute inflicted damage among ships; a 3 hit attack on a satellite may be negated by distributing the damage amongst 3 different ships at Range 1.

After round 5, pilots may flee any table edge to avoid being destroyed.

Victory Conditions:

For each satellite destroyed, the Imperials gain 1 Asset Point. For each Satellite remaining, the Rebels gain 2 Asset Points.

If a player would earn less than 2 Asset Points, he receives 2 Asset Points.

Play tested this today. We will begin the campaign and replay this mission the next time we get together.

Deployment. Nothing too exciting, but my brother did have the cunning idea of tucking satellites behind asteroids to make them Obstructed.

However, he lolly gagged out the gate, hoping to set up an alpha strike. This gave me an entire free round a satellite destruction.

OTOH, it worked. Next round involved turning all of my Lambda Cows into ground beef. 12 sets of cruise missiles at 5 dice vs. 4 Lambdas.

WE CAN'T REPEL FIREPOWER OF THAT MAGNITUDE!!! Even if we are Imperials.

A tactical victory for a strategic loss. All of my TIEs blew thru his line and mopped up all satellites in the backfield. A 12:0 loss for the Rebels.

Changes (reflected above):

2 hull for the satellites so that TIE can't 1-shot them.

Allows Range 1 deployment from the board edge to allow better Rebel protection.

Strategically, my brother needed to worry less about killing me and protect the satellites. He only use the "protect" option twice on the last satellite. The YT-1300s should have been acting as damage sponges for the satellites.

Bonus bling shot. Left-over Flash Tattoos from my wife's Star Wars themed yoga class Friday night :)

Just great, now I have to get 3 more Lambdas, 2 More YT's and 7 more Z's.

I had hopes that I could drum up interest in a "community play" experience with this. Hopes were thin before, but now with 2.0, meh.

I have to say that the main boards are beginning to feel like having a conversation with a bunch of expectant mothers when you are not expecting. It's all diaper genies, toddler outfits, and daycare decisions. They are not my concerns, not my dreams, and I can't really say much more than "I'm sure it will be marvelous."

Worse still, I'm beginning to get a reputation as someone who "hates kids" for saying anything that spoils the dream.

Epic, for the foreseeable future, has become a billabong in the river of X-Wing.

So, since I'm not going to go to Toche Station to pick up some dial converters, I'm just going to mind my own business with my trusty, if rusty, R5 unit. Maybe we'll see if those factory direct parts for an R2 unit can be used with my R5.

Or maybe I'll transmit my application to the Academy next year.

Until then, I don't think I have much to contribute for now, and I'm in France for all of June anyways.

So, I'm just going to say au revoir in my favorite little corner of X-Wing land, take a break, and worry about XWM later.

Thanks to all the wingmen who had my 6.

Ahh, that's too bad. To me, you're one of the greats. Hopefully you'll sneak an occasional peek and maybe come back at a later date when things settle down.

Take care.

Seconded. You really have been mistreated over on the main forums due to your opinions on 2.0. Sad to see you go, and hope you come back. Amuse-toi bien en France!
