I just caved in - and it is going to be glorious!

By Sciencius, in X-Wing

I have been somewhat hesitant about all this 2nd edition.. I love 1st edition, I love the game, the game mechanics, the list building decisions, the game play, the fact that each wave seemed to bring in new ideas and mechanics that expanded on the game play, to the way they addressed fixes through Aces/Veterans-boxes, and kept bringing old ships back in to glory (as power-creep is unavoidable if you are going to keep selling your stuff) - basically everything!!

The new game mechanics of 2nd edition, at first left me feeling uncertain about the game I loved and question if I should stop my collection here. Mind you, I was not the cost of the conversion kits that has bother me, as I feel they are giving us a bargain. Normally you would play $40 for an Ace-kit for like 2-4 titles that would fix TWO SHIPS! Here you pay $50 to fix an ENTIRE FACTION!

No it was the new type of game mechanics, the fact the action-chains are controlled limiting arc-dodging (no autothrusters) and no turrets. It felt like the pillars of the game: Jousters kills Turrets, Turrets kill Arc-dodgers, Arc-dodgers kills Jousters, and all the variations thereof were gone. The list building space felt a little "limited" compared to the rather limitless way that 1.0 allowed to practically combine any type of upgrade (sure some faction/action-bar/ship-size/uniqueness restrictions might apply) and allowed you to build power-houses/lists - but I also see the ever increasing impossible balance task and problems the 1st edition approach gives the designers. But I am going to miss Veteran Instincts, miss Push-The-Limit etc.

But now as the new game mechanics slowly are being revealed to us and (perhaps intentionally) leaked (the Polish) and I have watched some 2nd edition gameplay and interviews with the designers - I am REALLY starting to like some the new ideas and concepts, and now I cannot wait for 13 of december!!

Just pre-ordered:

1 2nd edition core set

2 Rebel conversion kits

2 Empire conversion kits

2 Scum conversion kits

And it is going to be glorious!

I assure you, ffg isn’t going to let one worlds event stop that massive promotion train of 2.0

they put too much effort into it to say “never mind”.

Turret/Bomb wing isn't the reason for 2.0. A lot of decisions very early in the game (wave 1-2) were making almost impossible to drop new content that would be both good and interesting without just being game breaking or the new meta. There's a lot of clear concessions in 2.0 to give themselves more room to work with and make interesting designs and fix old problems that were hampering the process. One big example is all of the upgrade cards going away. If you just count numbers, I'd guess at least 1/3, but maybe as many as half of the more problematic or superfluous upgrades have been removed. Then you have all the firing arcs printed on all the ships allowing for more versatility, harder caps on action economy, less offense and defense dice adding and higher premiums for the super pilots. They're aren't looking to make A game, they're looking to make something they can push for at least another 14 waves.

Did hear, and congrats to Sim - but you see I like to get the playing field a little even as I aint got those mad skills... besides I am loving this new game!

Love your enthusiasm.

Im gonna wait and see if they actually plan and test this time....

Question: are all new releases going to support 1.0 and 2.0 like the new Saw/Reap?

Nope, once 2.0 drops no new content for 1.0

I think you can almost be certain 2nd edition is not going to be balanced from the start.. I mean I they cannot balance a single new ship in a new wave, how on earth are they going to balance 3 new factions? And the point is that they are testing the game in a small "pond" of OK players and not in the real world with TOP players like you and me ;D .....BUT this is the key!! NOW point costs are adjustable and balance can be achieved quickly and easy and they can keep iterating until balance have been achieved.

I also first thought of waiting, but then I realized the tremendous amount of run there is going to be on these boxes.... they state themselves that more than 7 mio. x-wing components have been sold, I wonder if they will carry enough, so once I decided that I was getting the 2nd edition - I decided I might as well preoder to ensure I get it from the start and can play....

This is so true; FFG can now balance on the fly, so to speak, and keep massive OP stuff from being undercosted/available to drive meta shakeups.

Well, that’s probably fine anyway; most classic canon ships are all covered in 1.0 anyway.

Nice thing is, version 1.0 can be played apart from Internet/electronic access from casual to high end play even years after FFG ceases to exist.

I’m still gonna patiently observe ?

I certainly get the fully analog part of 1st edition, it is a great game.

For 2nd edition it is my understading you will be able to download and print a full pdf with (the latest) costs of all pilots and upgrades (=all cards).

I think is just unclearly written english, in the follow-up sentence it becomes a bit more clear. A lot we do not know yet, but what we do know is that some of the titles/upgrades are now stabeled onto the pilot card, examples are /X1 Advanced Targeting Computer - these upgrade card do go away.
