U-wing & Ship scale for Legion

By Tealadin, in Star Wars: Legion

If anyone was curious about proper scaling for Legion I've been playing around with the numbers. While the Hasbro's U-wing is not perfect it does look like it might fit well enough. My numbers are not based on the total toy length, but rather on what it should be. Based on official measurements (82ft - 24.98m) an appropriate scale would be 20"; while the toy IS 20" long its foils are approximately 5" too short. Based on the calculations the Hasbro U-wing is scaled at 1/40-42ish, with 1/48-50 being more ideal for a 32mm game. For those curious about other appropriate scale sizes look on wikipedia for the length/height of your desired vehicle and divide it (in centimeters) by 49.14. This will give you the cm value, for inches use google conversion to convert. Got that number by comparing Lukes mini height to Mark Hamill's height, if I'm wrong on the math let me know; numbers aren't my strongest skill :D

Since it seems to be mostly in line I'm ordering one to convert as a terrain/senario piece. I'll upload pics as the whole thing progresses. Also the AT-AT Kenner toy seems to be ok scale...if not a bit too bulky in the head.

I got the Lego U-wing last month to try to use. It seems a bit small, but I think I'll try it for my next game.

Don't worry, I'm probably even worse with numbers, I usually simply go by eye and gut feeling. That's why I ordered the Hasbro U-Wing blindly. It's big, and it fits the miniatures. It also takes up a lot of space with its wings! Here's some pictures for comparison (wings not attached right now for ease of handling while painting).

And here's a picture from the movie that shows, though the model's wings might be a tad short (they are still impressively long), that the hull has the right dimension to fit a squad if infantry:

Is this the nerf blasting one?

Yep.

Yes, but I disables (aka glued up) the gun and the mechanism for the sake of the paint job. Same with the wings.

I have handier nerf guns anyways. :)

Just got mine today. I'm wanting to open the doors up on the sides to allow a gunner to be stationed there, but will see. Thanks for the early pics though! I'll update mine once it's painted and the lagging pads complete.

I wouldn't use a specific character model as a height reference, there's always a risk of "Hero Syndrome"(ie, "he's important, make him bigger"). Also, the game is not "32mm", and wargame "scales" are always iffy for converting into proper scales. The system I've been using is - Rebels are ~37mm, Stormtroopers are ~39mm, so a "scale human" of 1.8m sits between at ~38mm - a "scale human" would be 38.3mm at 1:47, so that's the target I'm aiming to get close to.

Based on putting a top-down image of the U-Wing into a 1cm=1m grid in GIMP, its width should be approximately 8.9m or 189mm in 1:47, its total length 24.98m or 531.5mm, and proportionally the main cabin should be ~11.8m or 251mm long by ~4.1m or 87mm wide(measuring from the front of the cockpit area, sans guns, to the back of the radiator fins), and the protrusion of the s-foils from the front of the cabin should be ~9.3m or 198mm. At their widest point, the foils should be ~1.6m or 34mm, while at the aft section the width of the whole craft can be broken down proportionally into: ~5.7m or 121mm(distance between inside of the engines), ~4.3m or 91.5mm(distance between the inside of the engine brackets), ~3.2m or 68mm(width of the "engine block" including the sloped hull panels), and ~1.7m or 36mm(width of just the "engine block"). The engines themselves should be ~6.3m or 134mm long.

The actual measurements are: 334mm total length, 221mm total width, 142mm s-foil protrusion, 300mm cabin length, 95mm cabin width, 143mm between engines, 80mm whole "engine block", and 40mm across just the greebled section, with the engine length being 145mm.

So, basically, it's all over the joint - 1:41 width based on total width, 1:39 on cabin length, 1:43 on cabin width etc. So in essence you're correct, it averages out to probably somewhere around 1:42, except for the shortened S-foils, but it's also a bit all over the joint in terms of proportions. Still, since we're almost certainly never going to get a proper model kit of the U-Wing in the 1:46-1:50 range that best fits Legion, for most people it is certainly the best option available. I'll be wrecking mine and giving a scratchbuild using papercraft templates a go because apparently my fetish is model scale accuracy, hah.

I have one of these and with some nuln oil/wiped on it, it looks great imo.

Just takes so much of the table up.

Yeah, my favorite quote dealing with this is "anytime you break out a ruler in Star Wars you're going to have a bad time". Cant remember who said it, think it was one of the designers from TFA, but it's very true. I know that this game is not true 32mm and that hero scale distorts size, but typically the sizes they distort are hands, feet and weapons. Height is usually unaffected. Luke is also the same (rough) height as the other rebels while the stormtroopers are taller and Vader taller still. So it at least looks like they're making an effort at scaling appropriately. Plus I noticed the toy is a bit chunky , but I figured if the minis were heroic scale why not the vehicle? :D

I never expected this to be perfect though. My friend has a LAAT gunship (and I really wanted one of those), but the 3.75" ship is way too big. This is less about getting it perfect and more about trying to find toys/models/kits that would be good fits. Mainly because FF will likely never release many of these items because of their shear size.

If you want a pretty good LAAT for the game, there are the old Star Wars:Transformers ones. They were pretty good on scale for the WotC minis, so they might be a little small. They also require a little bit of work to get them tabletop ready, but not that much and they look great on the table.

I'm pretty happy with the size of the Hasbro U-wing on the tabletop but I keep feeling like the landing gear is too tall. Part of that has to do with the clearance required for the ridiculous Nerf launcher. One of these days, I may make some adjustments to get it to sit a little closer to the ground... but I'm more concerned with painting actual Legion models for the time being.

I have a pile of the Action Fleet ships from my WOTC SW days plus a Revel Snaptite Millennium Falcon and Imperial Shuttle. Scale slightly off, but workable.

Anyone picked up the TIE Striker from Hasbro and checked it for scale? Stopped by a Toys R Us today and they have both the U-Wing and the Striker (Striker being a bit cheaper). Almost bought the Striker to sit on my mates landing pad terrain, but thought I'd ask if anyone else had tried it out first...

I have it and posted some pictures with a stormtrooper in a different thread. It is to big I think.

I've also been using a few action fleet ships in my games. like the A wing and t-47, both fit the scale really nicely.

Has anyone gotten the Revel master series tie fighter or the snap tite first order tie? Looks like both would be a good fit for the game from the pictures.

My daughter has the Snap-Tite First Order TIE. I'll try to scale it out when I get home.

I'm actually looking at a different Transformer, the Sabre Tank! looks pretty good so far and I've got some new side mount guns on the way. I wanted to get some armor for the Rebels and this worked out very well.

I'll have to look into that LAAT gunship too, thanks for the heads up!

I think this older thread has some relevance here. Lots of "canon" size vehicles and how much space they would take up on a 3x6 board.
