Talisman: The Lawless Realm

By Reedstilt, in Talisman Home Brews

The time has come to choose a side. A usurper sits on the throne. The royal family has fled for their lives. Clashing armies trample the fields, and bandits pillage the countryside. Only the Crown of Command can restore peace to the land, if your enemies don't steal it away first.

The main purpose of this expansion will be to populate the core Adventure Deck with Law and Outlaw Enemies, but as usual with my expansions it'll include other cards focused on related themes. The biggest change here is an alternate rules for Wanted Posters. Instead of being acquired at the City Entrance, they are available at the start of the game and become assigned to specific Enemies when one of the appropriate type is encountered. As for character-based Wanted Posters, they're mainly used to keep track of your growing bounty as you break the laws of the realm. This is explained on a Rules Card added to the game.

As you wander the Outer And Middle Regions, you'll encounter some familiar and re-imagined faces, as certain cards that weren't Law and Outlaw Enemies have been changed . There are also plenty of new ones too.

This is still a work in progress, so if you see anything in the new Wanted Poster rules that might cause problems or needs explained better, let me know. Also, if you have any thematically appropriate ideas, I'm always happy to hear them.

EDIT: Just noticed that i have the wrong encounter number on the Horse Thief. I'll have to fix that.

How about a corrupt sheriff. He can be evaded if you bribe him and arrest non-wanted characters. maybe also remove a gold from your wanted poster for a gold.

A version of the Corrupt Sheriff was actually the first new Law Enemy I started working on, but so I haven't pinned down a final version that I'm happy with. I've been trying to keep him in line with his original effects. Maybe shifting him to interacting with the altered wanted poster mechanics would work.

While we're on the subject, I added a bit to the new Wanted Poster rules to specify that the gold on your wanted poster is your "bounty." When I started writing cards that directly interacted with that gold, writing "your bounty" saved a lot of space over "the gold on your Wanted Poster." Here are some of those cards:

There are also Shroud Daggers and a Shroud Stallion, which likewise perform better when your bounty is high.

EDIT: Just noticed some issues I need to fix on these cards, especially the Scapegoat (should be "whomever" and "you may discard it") and the Shroud Armour (need to specify that you discard from your bounty, not your actual gold).

I still have some finishing touches to do, but the deck is pretty much done now. If you're curious, you can see it here .

I included new versions of the various horses and draft animals with the Bludgeon's Steed keyword and my Draft keyword to work with the the new Horse Thief card and the Squire follower. There are a few other cards in there inspired by Bludgeon's work too, so thanks for that!

With all those new Outlaws roaming the land, you just know someone is going to put a bounty on their heads. Also, to keep things compatible with future updates I want to do (and some of you already have done), I'm adding a few additional Wanted Posters for other Enemy types as well.

I just might. I wasn't too happy with the way mine turned out. I particularly like your Undead poster. I wanted to use the skeleton, but couldn't find a decent version of the image online. The Fae poster is also quite nice.

I had an unexpected one-two punch of work and family drama that slowed me down on this project, but it's finally done. I just sent it off to Jon so hopefully it'll be up on the site soon enough. It's in the usual pdf format, but if you want any individual cards let me know and I'll send them to you.

Also, I included my own wanted posters, but feel free to use Jon's instead.
