Destiny is Dying...Fast

By Forcause31, in Star Wars: Destiny

Living in a community many LGS and Facebook groups to gather and organize events have gone silent. Is this happening in your area? We have had one of our biggest get out recently. This tells me FFG has tanked this game while Legon, X-Wing are alive and well. What do you guys think? I live in SLC as well.

I think we are in the worlds/post world period where there isn't anything new to play and no particular reason to play. Once Store Championships and Regional start back up there will be a surge I expect.

While I don't think this is 100% of the decline, it is the first lull in high level competitions we have had since the game released and could be a decent enough factor.

Legion never took off in my area. There are a few players. X-wing and destiny both have crashed over the past years. X-wing went from 20-30 players down to 4 due to stale meta, hoping 2.0 gets it back over 10. Destiny fell off a cliff when product was scarce. It grew some after the most recent set but drafts and tourneys are still 3-6 players instead of 20+ at launch. Game should have been a lcg, could have made all the dice up front. How many characters have the same die. Luke could use blue die #45 ect.. you don't need the silly art on each die face. Ccgs are basically gambling which turns many off without a good singles market. While we have ok, the good cards are way over priced. People will pay 50$ for a single card and die, that's rediculous. I could buy a whole board game or video game and get 20+ hours of enjoyment for the same price. Even an entire x-wing collection costs about the same as 3 boxes a set for destiny that still leaves you missing many cards.

K.

I'll add your assessment to pile of "destiny is dying/dead" statements, a pile started some time in January 2017.

Heck this forum feels like a ghost town compared to X-wing, then again so do most others but they're atleast getting news. We got a couple cards spoiled, but no idea when the next set will come out. I haven't played in a destiny night event in 3 months. The only games i get in are on TTS or against my brother, I don't really look forward to playing this game anymore because its gotten so stale.

I'm pretty new to the game and like it, but all these threads can scare a guy off from investing in a constructed deck. I'm curious though, according to FFG, Legacies was released Feb 1, 2018. That's only a little over three months ago. How often are you expecting set releases? I don't know what they said they were going to do, but I know that FFG has never met a schedule it couldn't miss. The only thing that is concerning is that the new set isn't even on the Upcoming page anywhere . I'm not used to seeing that.

As much as I am critical of how FFG has handled things with SWD, I can say this as a counterpoint: the game dies only if we allow it to. We, as a community, can be a proactive partner in ensuring the game continues. We can organize Learn to Play events, organize competitive events, and beyond if we put our collective minds to it. I am astonished by the creativity and passion from so many members of our community. For example:

Cantina Brawl Classic

There are some talented people out there making a community happen, regardless of support from FFG out of love for the game. There are people making new/alternate game types for the love of the game. And that's not to even touch upon the incredible dedication displayed by so many in the online community, who offer so much to keep those of us in less-than-thriving local communities moving forward.

So...the game is only dead if we let it die on that level. Heck, there's still an event at this year's Gencon for the Decipher Star Wars CCG! Star Wars Destiny will live on as long as we want it to. I'm personally invested in the game and am doing everything I can to help it grow. Do I think that FFG could improve in a number of areas to increase our faith in them as a CCG company? Of course! Do I think they've made a number of missteps that are costing them customers? You bet! Do I think this is the end? Not by a long shot!

I think we need to be critical of FFG and hold them accountable...but balance that with not going so doom and gloom that we create a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'll be the first to admit, that's not an easy road to travel. But...if we can, I think we'll get through these initial growing pains and come out with a strong game that could last decades. Only time will tell. I'm going to TRY to focus on the positive and keep pushing FFG to improve on some things. From those who have played other FFG games, it seems like they are improving...let's try and focus on that positive and keep pushing for more.

I believe the original intent was every 4 months at the latest. The hard part has been some mishaps on shipping and some tough 'early release' sale dates and such that have messed up that calendar a bit. It's not as simple as we'd like it to be. :) The issue with product right now is more about getting a set schedule with consistent release dates than anything else. Right now, we have a vague answer of Q3 of 2018 for the next set. But...that's quite a long gap from when Legacies hit, especially in comparison to the window between Empire at War and Legacies. So...communication is vital and people just want a release schedule. Something they can look to and prepare for. And, as you said, the Upcoming page doesn't seem to be of much help at the moment either. So, one of the major items people would like to see improved is just a stated release schedule for major products for...well, I'd love a year minimum...and then to actually have items ship and be in stores on those stated dates/times. As you said, FFG has been known to miss their schedule before. I think the community would just love to have some stated dates and then to see those dates followed through on.

I understand what you want and why you want it, but having watched FFG (and now ANA) over the years I feel that it is unlikely we will get it.

Don't believe everything you see. I'll leave it at that.

The 3100 people watching the worlds final makes me think Destiny isn’t quite dead yet.

These forums have never been the main source for Destiny related discussion. Its always been the FB groups and as of late Discord channels.

What I find interesting is, everyone is talking about it dying, etc. but this is the best Meta we have ever seen since inception. Look at worlds, if I'm not mistaken the top 16 had 14-15 different decks? That is incredible to see such diversity in the meta. Gone is PoeMaz era and the game is the most fun I've had deck building since day 1.

Well, the last set was technically available in Dec/Jan. So it has been a while and things have gone stale. Nothing to really talk about on these boards and Legion is the new Star Wars gaming hotness and of course all the talk on 2.0. FFG does need to release the next set at the beginning of Q3 rather at the end of. The game is for sure losing steam but a new set will get it going again.

I think now that we are post Worlds, we'll get some steam back. Today's announcement about NA Championship was a good start...and just hoping for Store Champs to come relatively quickly. Now I WAS hoping this was part of the Hyperspace Report...but...well...that didn't happen. :) The long wait between sets is going to be brutal, but really pulling for an early release at GenCon (since I'm actually going this year, wife approved even!) or at least events there that can use it. Just NOT for the NA Champ event itself if cards aren't available for a month minimum. That would be Regionals season all over again. :( Regardless...just mean to say, I think we'll get some momentum back. Just would really help getting some of these communication issues under control to help the process.

That's the reason the fan base is as upset as it is though. The meta is amazing/diverse/fun! But the player base is...nigh non-existent on a local level, despite the best efforts of those involved. Many of us have fought hard to grow the game (Learn to Play events, giving out decks, running things at local conventions, etc) and haven't seen much headway in terms of increased player base. And, that's okay...our choice to put our time/energy into said efforts...but it just burns all the more when you know this game is incredible and you want people to play. Worlds was awesome and loved the diversity...but the game living on the 'national/world' scale doesn't mean it is thriving in my local area. And we want it to...trust me!...but just can't seem to get it done. So, people are upset because they are striving so hard to make it work and want to see more from the top-down (FFG level) supporting those efforts. I DO think people are jumping to conclusions with 'it's dead'...but I DO think some of the concerns are warranted. If we can't stay alive at a local level, it will be in trouble. And none of us want that.

Sadly true for my LGS. Same for dicemasters. Me thinks my local crowd doesn't like collectable dice games. Sigh.

If we could run Store Championships quarterly, Regional Championships 6 monthly and have Worlds yearly then there is going to be a high level of noise for competitive play. At the moment I think interest waxes and wanes with the competition cycle and it isn't frequent enough.

Personally, I lost a lot of interest when FFG announced the rotation . This is the first card game I've ever played and I really enjoyed it initially. I spent far more than I anticipated I would on the game. As soon as the rotations were announced I presumed the value in the cards/dice would drop significantly and I sold a chunk of my collection for a reasonable amount. I've since bought drips and drabs of Legaices and 2-PG, starter sets, and follow announcements but I haven't played a competitive match in 6 months or so, and only a handful of casual games since then. Locally in Canberra (Australia) from recent discussions, most people I have spoken to haven't played in some time, and the game has essentially been called 'basically dead' by the FLGS. However, people I have spoken have also said they are still keen to play casually. As I said, I enjoyed playing it and subsequently I am planning on organising some casual tournaments for the majority of people who still own a significant amount of SWD collections and encourage some new people to try it out. As mentioned above, the community seems to be the key with keeping the game alive and growing... with a little help from FFG and FLSG ;)

^ This. Both rotation argument and community argument.

Also, although Destiny may never die, it will always...dice...

While i still enjoy the game my small group was big into Destiny at release but found it way more $ than they wanted to spend. The group still plays game of thrones and Arkham because they know if you pay 100$ of game you don't get duplicates or have to keep opening packs or pay 50$ for one die. I really do like the game but find the collectable part of it to be a burden stopping more people getting into a fun game.

Game is fun, way too expensive for what it is however. If they converted it into an LCG I would definitely buy.

There is a lag at the moment mostly due to FFG not being able to specify and stick to a release schedule.

We have seen it after every set - 6/8 weeks of peak interest and then without OP you see a drop off until the next release.

Store championship season should get everyone excited again if we get enough local stores doing them.

218 at the European champs this weekend is not too shabby for a game that is 18 months old.

Dont worry this unboxing to the rescue:

https://gaming.youtube.com/watch?v=8tKS7zdRe9Q&feature=share

this is the worst unboxing EVAR!! Bad english, camera so bad it cannot focus on cards and dice ? ? , and the guy does not even play or understand the game ?
