Tournament Legality?

By DailyRich, in X-Wing

So say I'm a new X-Wing player with my nice shiny 2.0 core set and expansions, getting ready to rock my TIE swarm or my X-Wing squad in my local tournament ... and what the ****, where did these guys get Millennium Falcons and Firesprays and Interceptors from??? I didn't need a conversion kit so I have no idea what these things can even do!

Do you think official tournaments will be limited to only currently released 2.0 models?

Why is this problem different from a brand new player to 1.0, with only a core set and a Falcon who might see an Aggressor or a Defender for the first time?

It isn't. New players learn faster and are more adaptable than people pretend, for the purpose of these scenarios.

hmm... interesting. I guess I'd say, well right over there is a rack of ships. and over here is a box that will allow you to play them with the current rules. and then, I guess we'll see if the new rule set really does a good job of balancing stuff out so the 2.0 launch wave one player has or hasn't a shot at being competitive.

I assume the app will have the rules for the ships, too?

unless the App is just the card name, price, and ship upgrade slots requiring you to own the hardcopy to play XP

Yeah, I guess I'm looking at it from a square one point of view rather than this being a continuation.

I just wonder at the availability of 1.0 stuff (I doubt FFG will keep producing/distributing it once 2.0 hits) and the perception of new players that they're buying "old stuff".

They stated with the launch and all wave launches they will have tournaments with a limited format in addition to normal play.

so a launch tournament will probably only include 2.0 ships.

Then I'd ask if they know the basic rules well enough to finish a game in tournament time...

1.0 players are of course going to have an edge over this person who only has 3 ships and a tutorial. Even with changes the basic game play is very similar.

Firespray is a standalone pack for one thing already :P

Future prints will be for 2.0, and you can always try and find someones 1.0 stash for cheap (trust me, xwing collections sell for dirt because unlike 40k theres not much reason to have a massive army)

This is something I've wondered about too.

On the one hand, if everything is tournament legal, there's a risk tournaments might be dominated by some lists that you just can't obtain anymore without turning to the 2nd hand market. That's not a great situation.

On the other hand, if tournaments are 2nd edition products only, people will start complaining about having bought the conversion kits, which is again not a great situation.

I imagine this is going to be one of the first alternate play formats that will be used. That is another nice thing about the app, as it will have rules for the special formats in there already.

I'd imagine that closer to the 2.0 release date FFG will announce a few different, sanctioned, formats. Borrowing from CCGs everywhere here:

1. Infinity. All ships and cards available in any way for the current edition of the game are legal.
2. Standard. Only ships that have been released in official 2.0 core and expansion packs are legal, but all upgrade cards are legal.
3. Restricted. Only ships and upgrades that have been released in official 2.0 core and expansion packs are legal.

Infinity will probably be the go-to for at least the first year, until FFG can generate a stockpile of more than 2 ships per faction to use in competitive play. Standard and Restricted will probably have a large spike in popularity a few months after release, but sharply drop off as new players rapidly fall in love with a newly outstanding game and buy up all the old stock and conversion kits they can.

New players lured in by 2nd edition are going to get curb-stomped for years by veteran players, especially considering we've already had so much practice (except meta players) at the core of the game - manoeuvring and action selection. It's not going to matter what they have access to, so long as they can explore a few good options, for at least the first year.
