A novel thought on Conversion kits? Probably not, but still...

I mean, it's not about need. I'm sure I'm not getting more than two, and more realistically, I'm going to try to find local folks to go halves with.

It's about the fact that thinking about how many I "need" forces me to confront my X-Wing collection honestly. The kits are just the prompt, and a lot of my trepidation isn't about the kits, it's about what I've already sunk into this game.

I always tell myself that if I wanted the money I wouldn't have bought the stuff.

I think you're being highly cynical about the expected availability of spares going forward. It remains to be seen, so it's a but pointless us arguing about it but I don't think it's reasonable for certain folks to complain they have to buy 2 plus conversion kits specifically so they can convert 4+of their ships. There will be tons of spares going.

I don’t think it’s cynical at all, given FFG’s track record with supply. I think if you want to compete in organized play events you should be preordering conversion kits right now. No one can predict the future but if you made me guess I would guess that conversion kits are not going to be available at launch to satisfy demand and that piecemeal conversions for popular ships are going to be in high demand and therefore hard to find or expensive in the secondary market. Core sets are likel to be stacked to the ceiling everywhere but conversion kits are going to be gobbled up.

I can feel the pain so many of you far more experienced players are feeling when thinking about the large collections and how much money you have put into them and what it would cost in conversion kits to port that over. It is a lot of money many of you had not expected to spend, but as Crabbok stated in a YouTube video yesterday (I believe), at least they did jettison all the X-Wing 1.0 stuff completely! Maybe not the biggest consolation, but still, there is a path for you to keep using the stuff you have already spent a lot of money (of course, by spending a bit more money, but still a LOT less than buying everything again).

My younger son and I are in a bit different situation. He asked for (and got) some X-Wing stuff last Christmas, having decided he wanted to play the game. So far he only has the Force Awakens Core, 1 A-Wing, 1 TIE Interceptor, 1 TIE Advanced and 1 Sabine's TIE. So, yes, we have not sunk much into the game at this point, but it also means it makes completely ZERO sense to pick up any conversion kits (or even 1) just for those few ships.

It remains to be seen whether he will want to continue on with X-Wing 2.0, and if he does it will be easy enough to just start building back up. It still just feels a bit bad to think of the ships we will just pretty much have to abandoned. That has me thinking, maybe it might make sense for FFG to make mini-conversion packs that are geared toward a single ship (say like the A-Wing). This could give you the new ship/pilot cards and bases you need. It might be a bit harder to add in the upgrades, but maybe it could be included? They could be priced at a reasonable rate (cheaper than a new individual ship pack to be sure). This could even help those long term players that are not getting quite enough conversion materials in the full conversion kits, by allowing them to possibly pick up a few more conversion packs when an second conversion kit would be overkill.

For many it is an opportunity to look back and realize how much they have sunk. I've been into collectible games for long enough to know what I was getting into, so I will be continuing.

That's an angle I have not thought about much, and I bet it's true for a lot of folks. If I wanted a single-ship conversion, it'd be because I've got one of a ship more than the kit contains, and I didn't want to buy a full second.

However, for many, a conversion kit is simply too big, rather than too small. My guess is that small conversions aren't entirely economically feasible. They'd have to be high enough price that they wouldn't really make sense. Like a $10 to convert a single ship, so if you had even five such kits, you wouldn't be spending more than a full set. To some extent, the best work-around to that is to be part of a larger community of players. There's probably someone who wants most of a kit, but doesn't need a few of the ships.
