I think I picked the worst time to get into X-Wing...

By Codes, in X-Wing

Hello all, first post and a brand new x-wing player, still learning the basics. If posting in the wrong area I apologize

So this past weekend I got myself the FA core set. And convinced a friend to check out the game. He got the other core set and 2 small expansions. One resistance one imperial. And I was going to pick up a used set of the original core set today used for half price.

Then I find out about the 2nd edition stuff coming out later this year. This news come less than 2 days after I bought my core pack. And I get why and it makes sense to me. Even being a complete noob to the series and only played a few matches. I don’t plan on playing competitively or going hard core. Just super casual playing with my wife and a few friends. I’m also super cheap so won’t actually be buying a lot all at once.

The problem is I don’t know where to go from here.

Do I not buy anymore and just start when the new stuff comes out? Essentially wasting what I’ve bought so far, maybe sell it and cut my losses.

Do I continue playing 1st edition focusing on the 2 of the 5 future factions my wife and I want to play and eventually get the conversion kits? That feels a little bit like a waste too though but not as bad I guess.

Any advice, help or input would be greatly appreciated. So did I get into x wing at the worst possible time? Or is there a bright side to all this?

First of all, Welcome to the game!

Are you enjoying playing X-wing? Sweet! That's all you need to do from here until September.

You get 4 months of fun to decide what to do. This game may not be to your liking after all--who knows?

As you put it, you'll be playing "super casual" so if you wanted to, you could keep everything 1.0 and still have a lot of great gaming experiences.

-----------------------------------

Having said that, if I were in your place and enjoying the game enough to plan to stick around for 2.0 I would limit any purchases between now & September to Original Trilogy ships. Why? Because 1st Order & Resistance Conversion kits won't be out right away. Rebellion and Resistance will be their own faction, as will Imperials and First Order. So we'll be seeing 5 factions!

To cut costs even further, you might want to limit yourself to either Rebels or Imperials.

If you stuck to buying only OT ships from a single faction, you could then purchase the conversion kit when it releases in Sept. and all those ships (there's a list on the FFG News page) can be brought into 2.0. First Order & Resistance conversion kits will sell for cheaper and at a later date (price & date not announced yet).

-----------------------------------

For "super casual" play you don't have to worry about 2.0--ever. Just enjoy the game! We got 6 years of fun out of it, you can too.

Just be careful--the bug will bite and you'll be addicted to this plastic crack and mistakes will be made!

if I we're in your place, I'd buy anything I was interested off the secondary market. like ebay or some of the facebook trade/sell groups. bound to find things dirt cheap now. Then if you get enough to need a conversion kit, go for it. or if not, just get the stuff as it releases. you have the luxury of not having to wait for everything to come out too. want a defender but they wont have the v2 one out till wave 4, buy one and the conversion kit components from someone with spares!

I think you are getting into the game at an absolutely perfect time. 2.0 is going to be great, you’ve barely made the “investment” a lot of us longer time players have, so you likely don’t have much to worry about in the way of upgrades.

Many fools will be selling off their collections as some sort of protest against the redesign, so after market ships will be a bargain.

You can pick up a conversion kit to future proof purchases of 1.0 expansions or ships people will be selling off as well.

Pick up a new core set and enjoy 2.0 wen it drops.

Welcome to the community and the game!

Not sure how your local scene is but in ours we have many veteran players who have pretty much anything. Ask around see if they will let you barrow some stuff to use. Maybe teach you how best to use each ship or upgrade. Then try out some of these ships to get an idea what you like. You and your friend have each a starter set try parting them out for one rebel and one imperial list and have some fun. Learn the basics of the game, maneuvering and the like. Then when September hits jump in as you will have an idea of where you want to go. The changes to the ships in 2.0 will be there but i really doubt they will change the fundamentals of each ship. A tie will still be a tie and the x wing will still be an x wing.

As for purchases i'd go with one faction for now and keep your purchases light. No need to go head first when you know your gonna need to update later on.

Last but not least have fun!

On the bright side, there's going to be a big discount on x-wing stuff on ebay as disgruntled players move to sell off their collections.

If you like the game, buy a ton of used ships online super cheap WITHOUT upgrades.

Consider it an investment, because they are going to re-release every ship at $20 a pop, but you have the unique opportunity to buy them cheap and then convert them in September.

GUARANTEED a lot of people are going to freak out and bail, and now might be a great time to buy a huge collection.

Welcome!

Welcome to X-Wing Minatures! You have chosen, or been chosen, to play one of the finest miniatures games on the market today. FFG thought so much of X-Wing Miniatures that they established a 2.0 version, for the game so lovingly crafted by its designers. I've been proud to call X-Wing Miniatures my favorite tabletop game.

And so, whether you are here to stay, or passing through on your way to parts unknown - welcome to X-Wing. It's fun here.

No but seriously you actually chose the best time to get in, because you're gonna' be learning X-Wing almost entirely by its newest mechanics.

I'd say now is a pretty good time to get in. The second hand market is going to be flooded with old 1st ed stuff for a variety of reasons, allowing you to build up a decent model count on the cheap. Then, come September you can convert all of your cheaply acquired plastic to second edition for less than most of us will have.

Alternatively, if you want to stay lean right now and wait until second ed to buy in, you can just hit up ebay for the conversion kits for the limited model count you have now.

(repeating some things that have already been said...)

Welcome! Its a great game. If you do not plan on playing in tournaments and stuff then you are fine. You can choose to wait for the 2ed stuff or you can pick up more 1ed stuff and just play casually. And if after a few games, you don't like the way something is balanced, then house rule it. In fact, if half the people who said they were gonna rage quit actually do, then you should be able to find a mountain of 1ed stuff for cheap on EBay and such. After a year or so, you may have enough where it is actually worth your while to get the 2ed conversion kits.

Thing is, this game can be fun if you own 4 ships or 40. You can play the standard 100 point tourny style matches or come up with objective based scenarios or you can play 200 or 300 point epic battles. Its all good.

Again, welcome and PEW PEW!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. I am loving x-wing so far and am worried I cought the bug you all have. I love the ‘if I were in your place’ replies and the other suggestions.

I have looked over a lot of the 2.0 info and FAQs so familiar with what’s coming in wave 1, conversion kits and what’s likely coming in wave 2. And in combo with all your suggestions I think I have a plan moving forward. The 2 of the now 5 factions I was leaning towards was Rebels (mostly for my wife, we both have really enjoyed the Rebels show, so we’ll possibly get those) and scum for me. Actually I was leaning towards these even before I knew of the faction split and think it’s a really cool idea. So the idea of keeping an eye on the used market is a great suggestion and buy within the conversion kits when and if I find good deals is what I’m going to do.

And I like that there isn’t really a rush to switch to 2.0 for me for now and I can just take my time and make the leap when I’m ready. And if I manage to not make any purchases between now and September I could always just start from there. But alas, I have itchy trigger fingers. So who knows.

Thanks for the replies!

Perfect timing. I’d use the list of contents of the conversion kits kinda like a buying guide and hit the aftermarket.

Welcome to the game! This is a great time to jump on board and you have already gotten some great advice. I just want to pile on by saying I would encourage you to take it pretty slow in the beginning. In 2.0 there is no need to buy ships outside your faction for upgrades so sticking to a faction for you and another for your wife as stated is a great plan. When I first started playing money was pretty tight and each expansion I got was a really big deal. I was always really excited to explore all of the new options it opened up. Since then my wife and I have been fortunate with job opportunities so spending money on hobbies is not a big deal anymore. I can pretty much buy what I want. But new purchases don't have that special excitement of the early days when I really had to mull over what I wanted to spend my money on since there wasn't much of it.

That said the advice about used stuff is also really good. Especially if you can get deals for %50 or less of retail.

Also reach out to a local group for some folks to teach you more about the game. In my group a lot of us vets who have really piled up the collection are pairing down a little and before 2.0 and selling some extra stuff to the new players so that could be a good line on some cheaper stuff as well.
