Excited About Conversion Kits

By Stinger07, in X-Wing

I don't think anyone has really mentioned this, but I'm actually excited about conversion kits.

As someone who has a moderate sized collection, I have a good portion of the rebel and imperial ships, but I don't have all of the aces packs or other pilots and whatnot. I am quite excited that I will get to play new pilots for my existing ships.

Sabine's TIE? Awesome! Raider Advanced Pilots? Yay! The full gamut of X-Wing Pilots? Sweet! Buy 1 Falcon, get 2 factions (assuming both conversion kits)? Yes please!

Anyone else excited to diversify their moderate collection?

I mean, I don't like paying $ so I get that side of it

but the currently open possibilities of 2.0 gives a single kit a lot of potential and near infinite replay-ability, provided FFG does good by making most things viable

so that's a lot to look forward to with just one box, and unless previews show me otherwise I see no reason to hit the paywall running when there's so much stuff to explore

My collection isn't moderate, but I did fall way behind several waves ago. Never bought the Ghost, and from that point forward I've pretty much only gotten one ship per wave.

So I'm fairly pleased with the ability to get everything but the models for all the ships I skipped, and multiples for those where I only bought one. Makes things a lot easier when all I have to do is ask a buddy to let me borrow his plastic. (And there's always potatoes.)

Plus, the latest rumor is 170 upgrades and 100 pilot cards. Per box, I wonder? Opening that thing is going to be like a week of Christmas mornings.

Luckily since I almost exclusively play Imperial/FO and my gf plays Resistance I can get away with just buying the new Core, Imperial Conversion and (fingers crossed) the FO/Resistance conversion pack in wave 2. The amount of material we're getting for $50 is wonderful.

I’m with you. Don’t have every Rebel and Scum ship, but this us nice! Plus, I don’t have all the unique pilots for my Falcon, X-wings, Starviper, A-wing, B,wing, and K-fighter, so I’m getting a bit more outta this deal.

Oh Yeah! I could run the phantom as the phantom 2! I never thought of that! and you can pick up just the ship on e-bay for some stuff for fairly cheap and get in that way!

I have a fairly large collection and am excited to be able to switch to version 2.0 with a small to moderate investment. I love to fly different ships and am not OCD about needing a dial for every ship I own. I will be starting small by buying a core set and one or two conversion packs (yeah right, I’ll probably end up with at least one of everything, even the wave I ships...) and will enjoy exploring the intricacies of X-Wing anew.

..but reading these forums I seem to get the impression that I’m in the minority...

Nah, you're in the (much less vocal) majority.

Haha! Thanks to this thread I just bought a HWK, Arc-170 and Phantom 2 on e-bay totalling £20 becasue they were models only, but as OP points out All I need is the models when 2.0 rolls around.

Sweet haul.

swear to god these new rules better do that sexy ARC model some dang justice...

I agree with the OP. As more information comes out, this really is the best way for FFG to address all the game issues whithout alienating either new or current players.

I look at it as I was already buying a expansions just to stay somewhat competitive and make the older parts of my collection relevant again. I was going to buy Saw's Renegades not because I wanted more Xwings and another Uwing (I really didn't want either), but so I could fly Xwings that I already have. With that in mind, paying for a conversion kit, even at $50, that makes an entire faction playable seems like a steal. I'll probably pass on Saw's expansion now to save up for the conversion kits.

i do feel for those who will need multiple conversion kits because of larger collections. I never purchased more than a single expansion of each release, so I'll actually end up with about double what I need.

The only real down side is dropping $150-$190 all at once. Saving up for September would be easy if I hadn't started playing Legion.

I've just compared the Scum and Imp kits to my collection.

Turns out I'm completely covered, bar a couple of Defenders (I'll get a new one when it's released), and some TIEs (but I'll have 7 once I've bought a Core, a kit, and an expac anyway).

So happy days!!! For a few others I'll only need a model as I'll already have the cardboard.

Will there be any reason to buy a Tie expac though? you'll get all the cards you need in the upgrade kit, so you just need to get a hold of a few more generics?

I'd agree but I know full well I'll get stuck into new shiny plastic crack even if I don't really need it.

Two potential reasons:

1. Want another official 2.0 dial

2. If the new sculpt is better than the old one.

Yeah I just mean you end up still having dialless ships that way. Let's be honest there'll be a third party market for the per ship upgrade sets, people are saying they'd rather pay $5 per ship, and i'm sure they will have that option.

3. there's a TIE fighter in it

not everyone owns TIE fighters

I'm actually surprised anyone has held onto them after NymRanda became a thing. ****, I sold mine wave 5

But we were talking about the one guy that already did have the ties and would end up with dialess ties.

Plus new players will want to have more TIE/LN's.
