Custom/Built-to-Order Conversion Kits

By SentinelJP, in X-Wing

I’m really liking the much needed changes to X-Wing and I fully support what the changes I’m seeing so far with 2.0.

However, as someone who has spent approximately NZ$4,000 on X-Wing over the past 6 years or so I am finding the one-size-fits-all approach to the Conversion Kits quite disappointing. FFG knows there are a great many people in the community who have spent years carefully purchasing and balancing their collections.

I feel that in addition to the standard Conversion Kits, FFG would do quite well to offer custom/built-to-order kits, at least as far as ships and dials are concerned. I have no idea what the make up of the upgrade cards will be, and with so much changing we would probably need to trust in their judgement to a certain degree and hope they supply us with enough of each card to justify our previous investments.

It would certainly save on wasted cardboard and ensure everyone’s ships were ready to fly on day one. I know I’d probably end up spending just as much or even more than buying the standard kits but at least I know I’d have nothing going to waste.

What does the community think about the idea of building their own kits to suit their collections?

Clarifying question: how many of your models are you using?

Not all obviously. I guess for me it’s more about being able to built lists with the freedom I’ve enjoyed in the past. 6 A-Wings or 4 Lambdas and the like.

Do you have ANY idea how expensive that would be? You'd have hundreds to thousands of custom packed orders to fill, people to FILL those orders manually, the TIME to hand pick the components and stuff them in a box... the logistics of it just doesn't add up. I get it, you want to upgrade everything in one shot, I do too, but there are other ways. A group of us are compiling the upgrades we need from a set compared to what we'll have left over and setting up trades to fill in the blanks. Yeah, we're paying $50 a pop for new dials, cards, pilots, bases, medium base adapters and all that... but for how many ships in each pack? 37 in the Rebels pack, 34 in the Imperial pack, and 39 in Scum and Villainy. The only thing close to these was the Most Wanted set for $40 and that came with S&V components for the HWK and Firespray... so only 4 ships and 3 models. There's no way FFG could financially or logistically satisfy the needs of EVERY X-Wing player with these. What they're providing allows us to get a SIZABLE chunk of our current fleet up and running for the new system. Yes, I understand you want full freedom to run the lists you want with 12 X-Wings or whatever.

Proxy until you can get everything you need to fill out your ranks. I can't imagine other players being overly picky about this with unless it's a tournament.

My groop mentioned to our store that they might try buying a conversion kit themselves, and sell "singles" of the conversions to recoup the cost, like a MTG singles binder.
