Starship maneuvers clarification

By hikari_dourden, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi people.

I am preparing a full space combat session for next week and I was rereading the starship combat rules to refresh them and take some notes. And it resulted that what I had clear now is not so clear, due to the wording of the rules.

After having done a search in the topics by "starship combat / actions / maneuvers" and found nothing clear, I want to ask you if my interpretation of the rules is correct or not. Thank you all in advance.

My interpretation of the rules is as follows:

  • A starship/vehicle can take a maximum of 2 starship/vehicle maneuvers per round.
  • For silhouette 1-4 starship/vehicles: both maneuvers can be "pilot only" maneuvers if the starship/vehicle takes 2 system strain damage and:
    • The pilot takes also 2 strain or,
    • The pilot transforms his action to a pilot only maneuver or,
    • The copilot does the maneuver.
  • For silhouette 5+ starship/vehicles: of this 2 available maneuvers, only 1 can be "pilot only". I see nowhere in the rules if this ships/vehicles can or cannot take system strain to take 1 additional "non-pilot" maneuver. By RAW, on "Combat Between Capital Ships", I guess that they cannot suffer strain, that they have to expend the starship/vehicle action for doing that.

So, my guessing in the following situations is :

  • Starship silhouette 1-4: if affected already by 2 "pilot only maneuvers" cannot take an "angle deflector shields" maneuver until next round. Or it can?
  • Starship silhouette 5+: if has already taken 1 maneuver (pilot or not), it cannot suffer system strain to take an "angle deflector shields" maneuver and has to spend its action for doing so.

I am interpreting this correctly or I am missing something?

Thanks!

Yes, you are missing something. The key is that the Pilot only gets two maneuvers per round, with a ship of Silhouette 5 or larger only being allowed one Pilot only maneuver per round. Anyone else on the ship can still make maneuvers and actions.

Similar to combat in small craft, capital ships can only perform one starship maneuver and one starship action (or two starship maneuvers) during their turn. This is not an inherent quality of the ship, however; it is based on the pilot or captain's actions and starship maneuvers.

Additional crew can perform non-pilot-only actions/maneuvers on their turn.

Along with the pilot, each additional crew member aboard can use his actions and starship maneuvers to man weapons, operate sensors, move about the ship, and generally engage in combat along with the pilot.

"Angle Deflector Shields" is not "Pilot Only", but your Pilot can only perform two maneuvers a round, period. If your sil 1-4 ship had a co-pilot or astromech, they could use their maneuver to angle the deflector shields.

Yes, I know a pilot and any other members of the crew can only take a maximum of 2 maneuvers, but this is not what I'm asking, sorry if I have been not clear.

What I am refering is the starship/vehicle maneuvers limit, witch is stated in one section of the rules that can only take 2 starship /vehicle manouvers, and in other section of the rules refers that can only benefit of 2 " pilot only " maneuvers.

This diferent wording in the Rules As Writen is what confuses me, I don't know if "angle deflector shields" is considered a starship maneuver or not, if it counts to the limit of maneuvers a starship can do (starship; not pilot, nor engineer, nor other crew member, but the starship limit), or only "pilot only" maneuvers are considered for this limit of 2 maneuvers of the starship.

Thanks!

Additional crew can perform non-pilot-only actions/maneuvers on their turn.

Ok, missed this answer.

So, the 2 maneuver limit for an starship counts only for "pilot only" maneuvers? Right?

Thanks! ^^

Yes, that is correct. And Silhouette 5 or larger only get one Pilot Only maneuver.
