Dear FFG: Creating Goodwill with Old Players for 2.0

While I do have my complaints about the 2.0, for the most part I look forward to it.

Many are taking issue with the conversion kits. (While I think the numbers are weird for what is included in each one, they are "fair" for the most part.)

How to solve this:

Make exclusive pilots for the conversion kits only.

Just 2-4 exclusive pilots would work per faction. Or even existing pilots in a different ship that you could only get by ordering the conversion kit. Even if it is for a limited time and it comes in a separate box.

There should be some reward for sticking with the game.

Just my 2 cents.

Are you tring to ruin 2.0 before its relase already? Didn't we learnt anyting from 1.0? They said they are removing faction upgrade exclusivity so I'm gessing crazy money grabs like the one you are suggesting will not happen.

Now, your point about rewarding for sticking with the game makes sense, arguably you could say that the conversion kit itself is the reward, but it is truly not the optimal way to upgrade a collection. It will be way better if they splitted the individual ships, alternatively they could sell the conversion kits barely above "manufacturing/packaging/delivering" costs instead of making a profit like is obviously the case now.

I mean... they're not done releasing new ships. The new ships will get the new upgrades.

If they put exclusive upgrades in every reprint AND released new ships with also-exclusive content, cost fatigue would set in quickly and balancing the game would become a freaking nightmare. I'd be a little surprised if they started releasing new content with the reprints without making the new content otherwise accessible (I think I read somewhere that they are planning to do this with new releases as well?).

look at how attack wing did it where they are selling a conversion kit for each ship. yea... FFG is doing it better. by a long shot

You really don't think there will be new content in the next 13 waves of X-Wing from ships already released in 1.0? I have some swampland for sale.

They've got a whole conversion pack worth of cards to repackage in the rerelease blisters.

Outside of “FFG is a corporate villain” fantasy land, what motivation could they have to slap new cards in packs that they can literally just PUT ON THE SHELVES AS FAST AS THEY CAN BE PRINTED?

Not holding a supposedly dynamic game in a static state for three years is pretty powerful motivation. In a niche market that lives or dies by innovation, they WILL NOT do that. Veteran players would be perversely incentivized to buy NOTHING for a very long time.

And they CANNOT put new ships on shelves as fast as they can be printed. VERY few of their customers (us) can afford to buy a whole faction fleet at one time. We've all spent 2-3 thousand dollars over 6 years to build up the fleets we have. You can't duplicate that in a single wave. And no LGS would be able to absorb that kind of inventory. It would fiscally catastrophic to try and spam releases. It has to be spaced out and I guarantee you they've put a lot of research into figuring out the fastest release rate the market can bear. Clearly, they will be able to do it in less than 6 years this time around. Maybe we'll get all V1 ships within 3 years plus a couple new ships from Solo. You cannot expect them to leave the game in static state for that long. I can't imagine waves being more than quarterly, and by wave 3, they will have some kind of new idea that just has to get out into play.

Some relevant nformation from the Livestream thread:

  • The upgrade card pools in each conversion kit are the same, excluding faction specific upgrades like astromechs.
  • Ship rereleases in Wave 2 onwards will contain a combination of conversion kit cards (for new players) and new cards.
  • There will be further conversion kits for players who want those future cards without rebuying ships.

Given they've also said you won't have to buy out-of-faction to get all the cards I'd wager these kits are a full set of the wave's new upgrade and pilot cards.

Fair points, and as I stated, I am totally fine with being wrong on this. In point of fact I am considering whether I should buy 2 conversion kits or sell down to the contents of one and just rebuy ships in the future...

Anyway, this also assumes discrete waves for re released ships. I expected at least some ships to get a “stealth” upgrade with their next reprint. That’s what I was getting at. While I am all in on 2.0, if FFG just does reprint waves for the next few years with a card or two added to each expansion, I’m not sure how many veterans will stay on board.

I, personally, do not think we will see all the v 1.0 ships printed again, and some will probably just go away. old EU ships, for example, will probably not get a reprint.

They will definitely be releasing new content alongside the reprinted ships. The split of Resistance/First Order factions is proof enough of that; they're not going to sit at 3-4 ships apiece.

A better solution would be to beef up the conversion kits so that at a minimum they could convert a 100 point squad of EACH ship variant....

IMHO the one product FFG failed on was something for the old timers. Sure, we got conversion kits so our models will be useful, and that's a huge plus. But the kits are missing some crucial items...

The new damage deck, the new maneuver templates, and rules.

So in addition to a conversion kit or 3, we also need to buy an entire 2.0 core set to get those 3 critical items....along with another X-Wing and 2 more Tie Fighters because 12 is not enough.

FFG should have made a 2.0 upgrade pack that has the damage deck, rule book, and templates. A quick 15-20 dollars would have been a good price point considering we wouldn't have to buy a whole core set.

So the next issue: I was part of the Destiny #2 set fiasco. It was not much fun being 6 months down on the list for my preorder to arrive playing against all the new hotness with a makeshift 1st edition list (because all that stuff sold out PDQ). That pretty much killed that game for me.

So FFG...if you are reading this I hope you have figured out that with every current player likely getting a core set and at least 2 Conversion kits (maybe the same faction, maybe different ones) that is going to be a butt-ton of product going out the door on day 1. I really hope you have taken a hard look at the numbers and are going to produce enough.

Imagine the hate mail with half your customer base still waiting for their pre-order to ship when the Tourny season starts and they get shut out because of your failure to provide enough.

That'd probably raise the price.

There are 13 waves of blisters going to be released. It is foolish not to think there will be exclusive stuff in these packs.

There will also be new brand new ships released and if they need to add unique cards that is a perfectly fine place to do so. No need to add any unique pilots to the rereleased blisters. So win-win.

Also you don't need the cards at all, since (even for tourney play) the app is "essential".

Templates are in the conversion packs.

Rules are online.

Damage deck is iffy - is there a new one? Is it in the app?

Somebody on reddit ranting about how terrible FFG are for charging for this. His idea was for them to do all of the work for 2.0, and then give existing players vouchers for free upgrade kits because it's their responsibility to fix their game. Why should he have to pay to fix their mess?

That idea was a bit worse than this one.

Self-Printing is a thing, but with the new squad builder they do this basically anyway for everyone. Dial apps are a thing already. ? So in essence FFG is in a sense doing that idea already. So not if #2 should not be #1 ?

Only for OP you need those card packs.

THIS

Existing players should not be forced to buy another core set.

How about:

get 13 more waves of ships to fly than someone just getting into the game. Seems pretty good.

what about limited edition foil cards ?

A foil Luke, Vader and Fett might have been a nice thank you to those converting over but I think the fact they have not done a full *other company* on us is - for those of us that have been in the hobby 20+ years - simply a welcome approach to what's honestly a needed edition change that I hope they won't need to repeat on a "cycle"

I agree. this 2.0 stuff is amazing and I'm in love with what it is doing for the game. There seems to be a few getting mad before they even have all the info which I find funny... but I have only seen one thing that upsets me... I am short A-Wing and Ghost dials in the conversion kit ;)
