I just hate the idea of 10 years from now not being able to play because you cant download the app anymore, and The phone I had it on was traded away for a new one, and the tablet I had it on broke, and the version on my computer won’t load because of the upgrade I made 3 years ago.

So... print off the PDF?

I’d rather support games that don’t require me to spend extra time, money and effort to be able to play.

@Darth Veggie They just said on stream that the re-releases beyond wave 1 will have some new upgrade cards, but there will be a way for players to get those cards without having to rebuy ships. Couldn't say what that means exactly yet.

There will be more conversion kits with just the new upgrade cards, which -of course- you need to buy. So more to complain about, depending on the price tag.

At that point, though, you're just describing "paying money for new stuff". Business as usual.

The thing that makes me reticent about an app is how much it needs to be consulted during a game.

the FLGS where I play the most has not great internet in their lower level play space and I find that just being there sucks the juice out of my phone.

It's a list builder, nothing more. You need to look at it once before and once after the game, at most, and even that can be easily avoided by printing out or writing down your list beforehand.

If they're smart about it, they'll make it so that you can look at (or even build?) your lists offline, but I don't know if that's the case. Either way, I don't really see how you'd need it during the game.

I entered miniature games because of Armada. After playing with PS and Xbox and PC for the past 30 years it was good to be back to physical world. Very well built miniatures, appealing card and token designs, the whole package looks great.

At the moment I am both pro and against an APP system for Armada.

For Pros

Armada is an evolving game, I have Monopoly and Risk from the beginning of the 80s, they are great but they are the same. Armada is constantly adding new stuff ( not for the past one year and this weel) and constantly changing rules to improve the gameplay. It is nice, but now I have lots of cards in my hand that are out of date and constantly I have to either print my own cards or look at FAQs while playing. An APP would be really handy here to organize all the cards and I am ok if they change the points and other stuff as long as it improves the gameplay.

as for Cons

Well, as few of you mentioned before, I want to play this game 30 years from now on. If the game will depend more and more on software it will shorten the life of the game. I have games on my phone that are 3 years old and now some of them are not supported with new IOS. I mentioned earlier, I have old board games such as Monopoly and Risk which I can play with them a hundred years later ( maybe my kids or their kids ). Some of you will say they are simple games and thus do not require such detailed upgrades. Well I have games like 2nd Fleet, 6th Fleet, board game of Hunt for Red October, Red Storm Rising and I can still play with them if I want to although I have to look at the games as historical and not current material.

So in short,

If Armada is going to have an APP it is fine however they should be able to print on demand whatever material is revised so we can still call this game a miniature game.

If it just an app, and doesn't require access to every part of my phone, I'm fine.

If however Asmodee/FFG think me needing access to the stuff they put on the app entitles them to know everything about me, who I call, what I look at, messages, pictures etc etc then I am not fine, there is no need for them to have access to that DATA, but I've no doubt the fanbois will tell me I'm a luddite because I fail to see the reason they need to have that information about me or anyone else for that matter.

I play their games now, and have done for a long time, and they have not needed that from me or anyone else to have a successful business.

So please don't brush it off, please don't say "everyone does it", it is not in any shape or form unreasonable to be unhappy if that is what they want for using their game app.

They said that events can alter point costs so I'm kind of thinking this might require an "always online" connection to use. Which kind of sucks. I really enjoy messing around with the Armada Fleet Builder on my iPhone when I'm trapped in what can only be described as a bunker at work.

I always tell people that the reason I play tabletop games is to get away from all the tech. If I want cool fleet battle simulators, I'm sure there's a few of them on Steam I could buy. I want to hold the materials in my hands. The push to digital was a huge reason I got out of the Warmachine and Hordes games.

We don't actually know that yet.

I'm not screaming with my hair on fire that the only way we'll ever see upgrade cards is in the app, but I am waiting for further information and I'm cautiously optimistic about what it will hold.

I guess we don't for sure, but I was watching the stream yesterday and they said to "think of it like your favourite list builder" and that you wouldn't need to bring a device to the tournament if you don't want to. I could have misheard or misunderstood, but that's the impression that I got.
