conversion kit pricing

By period3, in X-Wing

I'm kind of curious. Simple 3 question poll:

Considering everything the conversion kits include, I think each conversion kit is:

A) Less expensive than I thought it would be

B) About as much I thought it would be

C) More expensive than I thought it would be.

(Note this question is not about whether the price is fair, or about whether or not you're buying into it. It's about your prior expectations vs. reality)

You all those ships... B

Given how I can upgrade all of my ships (except for the full swarm) from a single conversion kit, I'm pretty happy. I expected more

With store discounts, that is a little more than a core set. About 5 g weed. It is really not a huge price. And I'll have extras from several ships, so I can just buy the discounted stuff from the saltqueens who leave over their game getting better.

This just occurred to me... Since the Resistance and First Order factions have far fewer ships than the other three factions, hopefully those conversion kits won't cost as much as the others...

The group I play with has discussed a second edition conversion for a long time and based on how I thought it would be priced out, this is actually less expensive overall and gets you converted much quicker.

Answer: A

I wonder if they'll make it one conversion kit and cover both. Probably not though.

The price is about right. The imperial distribution of ships is screwed right up who has 3 deci but only 2 defenders. Should have enough to run 4 of a given small ship like the x wing in 1 pack. But it takes 2 packs for most.

One thing to consider with the price is that the Conversion packs are listed at requiring 5/6 card sleeve packs, that means around 250 cards in addition to all the cardboard.

depends on the size of the box, but it's a hefty cost relative to the only point of comparison I have

granted it's an UNFAIR point of comparison because warmachine just had to sell a stack of like 20 cards, no tokens no base no nothing like that

so eh

only thing I'm personally miffed about is needing another core set for damage decks and lines on templates. Fortunately, I "only" have 2 Xs and 3/4 TIEs so I'm still getting use out of the ships

probably not the TIEs, though...**** green dice

B.

and I can guarantee you I'll make over that back selling individuals of what I don't need.

Hmm, I'm C. I was expecting maybe $30 max per kit. It's cardboard and cards which they designed anyway for the new blister packs. Yes, I know there are other production costs, but x-wing must have sold well north of $100m of product since 2012. FFG is going to make their money even if the conversion kits only break even, and it'd have been nice if they threw the older players a bone. Then on top of that, they split factions again, so now I need to buy four boxes instead of two. Ideally I'd need six boxes, though with the aftermarket I can probably get away with four.

Still, 2.0 is overall a net positive for me. I have always wanted to call my x-wing collection complete, but I never felt great about the gigantic FAQs and broken mechanics. X-wing 2.0 reboots all that and after a few conversion kits I think I can call my collection done. But I still think they screwed us on the conversion kit pricing. "they" could also mean Disney I suppose, i'm not sure how their licensing fees work.

Somewhere between A and B. Seems about right to me for what I was expecting, and honestly comes with a lot more content than I owuld have expected. I was expecting to get maybe one dial per ship, and maybe two for swarmy ones.

Or even only to get dials for the ships they're upgrading the dials for.

I find it really pretty generous, actually, for one kit to cover a decent collection of one faction. I've got a decent chunk of X Wing, and there's only a single ship I own that won't be covered by a single kit, in factions I'm keeping at least.

Definitely Option A. Less than I thought it would be.

I expected they'd release card packs for 4 ships or so, and price them at about $10-15. This is much, much cheaper than that would have turned out to be, and gives us a completely playable faction at once, rather than waiting months for your favorite ships to be rereleased in a card pack.

I think we call all agree they're much better value than X-Wing usually is.

Whether it's worth buying is subjective.

I hadn't really thought much about how much it would cost. All things considered, it seems about right...? More or less the price of a boardgame with that many components. Especially at the $40 preorder price, it seems fine.

That said, I think they skimped on a couple ships. Unless they're planning on adding the escort ships to the epic ship conversion pack, there's at least two TIEs and an Xwing too few. Also, too few Bwings and Awings.

The option of not including maneuver rules/damage deck makes some sense, as someone who bought all five conversion kits would be left with waaaay too many of these. By buying one new core, we're left with additional TIEs and Xwing, so, probably the lesser of the problems.

Other than that, I'm cool with the contents and price.

Doesn't resolve all your problems, esp. template questions, but still. It will apparently be possible to get a damage deck without buying the core set.

Regarding the price: For me, the sticker shock wore off when I did the math and realized that they are basically selling the conversions in bulk for less than $1.50 per ship plus all the upgrade cards, and also that there will be a huge secondary market for surplus cardboard, dials, and upgrade cards. So if you need, say, that third defender conversion, I don't think it'll be crazy hard to acquire one without having to buy a whole conversion kit.

Yeah, the alternative of $20 per small ship makes $50 easier time swallow

They're a higher price point per unit than I expected, but much better value.

A major down side is the upgrade cards are a different size than the current ones, so all those protectors we have cant be transferred to the new upgrade cards.

But you can still keep your "classic" cards sleeved to use for HotAC or just playing classic games casually.

It's more than I thought it would be, but it also includes more (cards) than I thought it would.

The price is fine. The cardboard included is weird.

If there was an Ace pack (or included in an Epic pack), should have 4 dials
Popular Swarmers should have 3-4
Large ships should have 1 (or ships that came with large ships)
The rest get two.
