Use the website or the pdf?

Do people seriously still build lists without an app?

All.....the......time. It may surprise you to learn that the world of games goes well beyond X-Wing and they tend to incorporate mathematical models in most of them. Some of us grew up without computers in our pockets and actually learned to do math on the fly. Some of us don't like downloading every new shiny object that comes across our line of sight.

Apps are a great option. REQUIRING an app for a game to even function is a problem. Still trying to discern whether the tournament scene will allow lists that aren't present on a mobile device. If that is the case then I'm done with the product line.

You need to bring a list to a tournament, paper lists are fine. You don't need to bring a phone with your list to play.

Well 3rd party app/web squad builders are/were a big hit for 1.0. I wouldn't be surprised if 3rd party crafty people come up with a way/templates to quickly and effectively print/organize point costs on cardstock or the like. See the cool Dominion board game setups to let you put the umpteen expansions, labled, on one box.

you should read that study. that 77 percentis is based on number of phones sold vs number of people in the country, not number people with a phone. I know a lot of people with a smartphone and work phone for example, and they included smart tablets as well, meaning some people have 2 to 4 devices. the stats ive seen are closer to 40% unique users

also it was an idiotic statement because making blanket assumptions about the populace is not a good idea, and saying that anyone who disagrees with your philosophy is even worse. anyone who spent money on X-wing should be able to play X-wing

I bought this game for my 15 year old god-son, and he doesn't have a smart phone and isn't allowed to get one till he is 18. his flip phone is fine. he should be able to continue playing without needing to buy a machine that many people agree is contributing to terrible things in our society. Amnesty internationals research just found the origin of budhist massacres of muslims in southeast asia right now were caused by a facebook algorythm oversharing racist memes while effectively censoring government rebutals for example. there are just as many reasons to want a smartphone as reasons not to, and each of us can make that choice for ourselves.

Lets just say worst case scenario that your 15 year old god-son (or anyone for that matter) under no circumstances could access the internet or gain access to the PDFs that FFG is providing for list building.

FFG has stated they are including with each ship pack "quick build cards" that have varying "threat levels" so that you and an opponent can agree to a "threat level rating" and each build your list based on the physical "quick build cards". I'll include an image of a quick build card for example.

You can still play without buying a machine (regardless of what facebook does with said machines... not sure how we got there).
