This is not a problem. Just look it up online a few weeks before your tournament. If you don’t have a computer... are you just mind-linking to this forum?

Use the web app on your computer and print out. Just like that you don't need a smart phone and thus entire thread has become pointless.
You're right,I posted from my Kindle. It was in response to a couple of posts telling me to invest in my future or calling me a Neanderthal and an irrelevant demographic. Huh.Ii
I'm sure we've all seen the video of the woman, on her smart phone, walking into a fountain at a mall. Or the vid of a woman that almost walked into the side of a moving train. When your device has more smarts than you do, it's time to reevaluate your choices.
I have no need to tweet about breakfast, post on Facebook that I'm at the airport or any other sharing that so many people of a certain age do. I don't suffer withdrawal if I'm disconnected from Wi-Fi for a day. There's books to read.
If I break my flip phone, I'll replace it for $40.00. I won't have to extend my contract for four more years or pay for insurance. I think I made a better investment than others have.
As for being an irrelevant demographic, I'll call BS. Belonging to a certain age group, the group as a whole has more discretionary income than any other demographic. No student loans, no mortgage, no car payments, etc..
Too many people don't know the difference between need and want. They need everything and they need it NOW! The lack of patience is frightening.
So yeah, I have the tech that I need. If a smartphone was required to play V2 of X-wing I'd be gone. Since there are other options available, I'll consider sticking around.

I read all my books on my smart phone (allot of books, I am not going to the bookstore every few days and paying bookstore prices, phone is so much more convenient and cost effective).
Anyways this whole thread is a complaint based on needing a smart phone, and you don't need one.

I prefer turning pages rather than swiping. Libraries are an excellent source of books to read. No money required.

You sir, are a reasonable person and therefore there is no place for you on today's internet.

I'm beginning to feel that way. Lol
I don't have a smartphone but I do have a laptop. However, I don't have a printer so I guess I'll have to manage by writing my lists on pieces of paper or clay tablets. Tactile!

you know only 40% of Americans have a smartphone, right? in other countries its much lower. The largest group that dont have smartphones are children who coincidentally are a big market for this game. also, its a board game. the point is physical components.
Got a citation for this statistic? It might be true across all age groups, but if you narrow it to the xwing playing demographic, I guarantee its far higher. I'd bet close to 75% if not a bit higher than that.
edit - did my own quick google, and I was creepily accurate w/ my guess. Your statistics are fake news, sir. Good day.

Also not sure where you get your stats... " Roughly three-quarters of Americans (77%) now own a smartphone" Quoted from http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/01/12/evolution-of-technology/
I'm not saying it's right or wrong to decide to purchase or not purchase a smartphone but I'd also disagree with children being the ideal customer profile for this game. At $15 (now $20) per ship on average at minimum, this game can add up to a sizable investment fairly quickly. I'd say it targets a 25+ age demographic. And even then, kids have phones. My 10 year old sister was the last kid out of all her friends to get a smartphone in the 4th grade.
As for physical components, those are all still there. The biggest solution the app provides is the ability to no longer require that points be printed on the physical cards (which are all still provided with expansions and conversion kits). Now points can be changed much quicker to balance the game without confusion since it's all centrally stored and referenced using an app.
Don't have the app? Library? Use a friend's phone? Do you have internet? All in all, I don't think the guy's (or girl's) comment was an "idiotic statement".
you should read that study. that 77 percentis is based on number of phones sold vs number of people in the country, not number people with a phone. I know a lot of people with a smartphone and work phone for example, and they included smart tablets as well, meaning some people have 2 to 4 devices. the stats ive seen are closer to 40% unique users
also it was an idiotic statement because making blanket assumptions about the populace is not a good idea, and saying that anyone who disagrees with your philosophy is even worse. anyone who spent money on X-wing should be able to play X-wing
I bought this game for my 15 year old god-son, and he doesn't have a smart phone and isn't allowed to get one till he is 18. his flip phone is fine. he should be able to continue playing without needing to buy a machine that many people agree is contributing to terrible things in our society. Amnesty internationals research just found the origin of budhist massacres of muslims in southeast asia right now were caused by a facebook algorythm oversharing racist memes while effectively censoring government rebutals for example. there are just as many reasons to want a smartphone as reasons not to, and each of us can make that choice for ourselves.
Don't worry about @Vontoothskie, he's been channelling Lot's Wife for months now.

I already wear a tin foil hat to prevent FFG from reading my brainwaves and stealing my MathWing ideas, but now they can get around that by just reading what I post after a release, and stealing my numbers directly! Now I need to put tin foil around the entire interwebs!

Fortunately, one of the BIG changes in 2.0 is the apparent reduction of upgrade card bloat
Since all the old "fix" titles are rolled into the pilot cards and hopefully everything will be better designed
So the 1.0 xwing fix that gives it refit+ servos + integrated? It's just half of servos now

Odd. If I break my smartphone, I CAN replace it for a €25 android smartphone, my contract is btw €12 per month and I can cancel with 4 weeks of notice. I think your investment might be not as good as you make it sound.
(Disclaimer: I can replace it for that price, but I would most likely spend about €250 for a contract free smartphone, because I like to use certain features, like reading news, books, doing some with email during commute, etc and I like to do this on a nice screen and with a reasonable fast user experience ... so €25 for a 320x240 Pixel screen would not cut it for my use-case and I have anyway a bunch of older smartphones with better specs, which still would be fine to use … but I am sure you get what I mean. A $40 flip phone is still more expensive than a basic smartphone)

My library offers me eBooks via an smartphone app. Though money required as they charge adults about €25 per year. That's pretty common though and rather reasonable price. The app includes reminders for book due dates and allows to extend the lending period of your loaned books. It's a rather convenient app. Though it's only needed to have because of the ebook DRM. Else the webpage would be fully sufficient to use ... which is still convenient to do during commute ... so again, convenient to do with your smartphone, instead of doing it at home at your desk.

Okay, let's say you don't use an app to build your squad. Let's say that you PAINSTAKINGLY add and subtract points with a piece of paper and a pencil, or maybe you're just that good with math.
Well, glory be to the heavens you don't have to do that anymore! Now, you pick a....
**drumroll**
...a THREAT LEVEL!
(By the way, they totally stole that from Imperial Assault)
You and your opponent pick a threat level, let's say a threat level of 5. You can VERY QUICKLY start a game now using the plethora of pre-defined pilot selections that have already been playtested to be good, and are already waiting for you in the box.
For example, this squad is a threat level of 5:

Now before you start whining like a Skywalker, just know that FFG didn't HAVE to do that - but they did. This is faster than what you are currently doing.
BUT if you want to tediously spend half a night with a pen and paper, building squads instead of flying them, they have a PDF for that and I'm sure SOMEONE with a computer can get it for you.
They thought of everything, even IMPROVEMENTS for the cavemen.
Oh, and it's web-based too in case you don't have a smart phone.

I really don't get the issue you can get something like the kindle fire really cheap during sales if you need something to run apps, it's not like you'll have to go and buy an iPhone x.

It's supposed to be windows/mac as well ... and potentially it's just an webapp, so it would run with a $10 raspberry pie and linux sd-card. ?
Then get a smartphone.
Now you can play.

If you showed up to a game with a hand chiseled clay tablet of pilots and upgrades... I think I’d just concede you deserve to win right then. We could play it out for funsies.
All you need to bring to actually play is the cards. You don’t have to have your list with you on your phone or printed to be able to play

and if the library is 30 to 45 minutes away? you gonna run an hour and a half errand so you can play a 1 hour game, then do it again for the rematch?
in rural areas it is common for a library to be even farther, in fact where I lived in virginia until recently the nearest library was the next county over. you are making an excuse that doesnt offer a resolution to the core issue here... in order to play the game you will need either internet access and a printer or a smartphone with the App for each player, which is stupid for a board game. Imagine if MTG didnt put mana costs on the cards, lol
there needs to be a way to print out all upgrades and their values to have as reference.

the cards dont have the costs, so you cannot make a list without the app.
I suppose you could copy down the values on paper and bring the cards, but it looks like things cost different amounts on different pilots, which makes accidental or purposeful cheating more likely

You mean like the the PDF of ship points that FFG has mentioned will be available? It’s exactly what you just asked for and has been mentioned by others before.
