Concern over Number of Upgrade Cards in Conversion Kits??

By DesignXception, in X-Wing

A basic issue that I still have concern over is how many copies of an upgrade card will be in each conversion kit? From the FAQ it appears we have a definite answer regarding pilot cards, dials, and base plates but it is unclear on how many copies of each upgrade card will you get. Hopefully it will be a direct conversion from the new ship blister pack but the numbers I've seen (i.e. 100 upgrade cards) seem low for a direct conversion to occur. For example, If I currently own 8 TIE fighters I know I have to buy two conversion kits to fly all eight at once in terms of pilot cards, bases, and dials, but what about the number of copies of upgrade cards I get compared to buying 8 new TIE Fighter blister packs. Say the new TIE Fighter blister pack comes with 5 upgrade cards, that would equate to 40 upgrade cards I would have if I purchased the new blister packs. Those upgrade cards can be used on other ships as well. Unless there is only one upgrade card in each new blister pack which I doubt that does not equate to a "Full conversion" and I would still have to buy the new blisters to get extra cards that the two copies of the Imperial Conversion pack will not supply if the competitive meta dictates that. Alternatively I may need to buy 3 or 4 Imperial conversion packs to get the same spread of upgrade cards compared to buying the new TIE blisters. That is the biggest concern I have unless I missed some information somewhere that addresses this. Anyone know????

With the official list builder app, I don't see why you would need physical copies of the cards.

If I can show up with an iPad, how can they make you show up with 20 pieces of cardboard?

So they are changing the rule from version 1.0 that you need a copy of each upgrade card for each ship you field? Therefore, I can have 5 ships in my build that all tie back to only one physical copy of a specific upgrade card? From a cardboard on the table perspective that make more efficient use but it will be hard for an opponent to visually keep track of what ship has what upgrade assigned to it without constantly referring to your opponents mobile device.

but a good printer/scanner... ? cheaper too!!!

Because organised play is a marketing tool designed to make people buy FFG products. There is literally 0 chance they will let you just use the app or printouts.

My concern is around the # of dials, etc. but I did see a possible good solution on FB where they could do one-off "booster" packages of individual ship dials like X-wings or Tie Fighters. I could see the same being true for upgrade cards.

I don't like the idea that the app prevents you from needing multiple cards mostly because I don't like the idea of an app but it is a valid point.

I imagine the card pool is going to shrink substantially. Lots of fix cards and auto includes are being incorporated into ships directly.

this is a good point too, if cards are broken and removed altogether it requires less cards

I hope that isn't the case. That makes the squadbuilder/app a lot less useful.

Hope all you want, I'd bet genuine money that OP will continue to require cards.

Not least because actually, cards are pretty useful. I can'teasily track what's going on with your shields and damage cards if you've only got your list on an app, let alone when your ipad inevitably runs out of battery. And honestly, not that many people even HAVE printers these days.

The cards exist for a reason in addition to being a way to make people buy expacs.

If they’re smart, they find a way to have your device show your opponents’ lists in a tournament.

If you’re at an event, you register your list and you see in the app who you are facing each round and what their list is.

I agree....it would be a poor business decision on FFG's part to not require us to buy extra copies of upgrade cards to earn them profits.

It's entirely possible that we don't need to have copies of every upgrade card on every ship.

Others look like they're going away completely. The "hull increase" of IA appears to be baked into the T-65. Same with generic titles.

It's going to be a new world, but it's also still four months away. I'm sure they'll be explaining all of this over the next few weeks so we can make more informed decisions.

My prediction unless someone can prove me wrong is that we will need to purchase the Conversion Kits PLUS purchase new blister packs for models we already own just to get the extra copies of the upgrade cards we need to be competitive that the Conversion Kits will not supply enough COPIES of.

I do worry about the number of dials. I own 8-10 Tie Fighters, 5 Tie Bombers, 5 Tie Interceptors, and a large number of other stuff.

Then again, maybe I can trade all my Tie Phantom dials with someone for what I need. I don't own any of those.

That is more then possible! The TO could be able to generate a code/list, this code is then entered into your tablet and it could show all the lists that people are playing.

I agree it would not be a business decision however you do still have to have the ship and the dial so it's not like they are giving it out for free

Most miniatures games don't have their rules broken up into hundreds of little pieces of cardboard. They seem to work just fine.

I think that applies to the number of maneuver dials per ship in each conversion kit... Not how many of what upgrade is contained therein.

There are about 150 upgrade cards per conversion kit. I really doubt they won’t tell us more details by the time August rolls around.

Dials are most important.

It appears from the Team Covenant article that there will probably be upgrade cards in future re-release blisters that will not be in the Conversion Kits forcing you to re-buy your older ships anyway if you want the new upgrade cards not available in the Conversion Kit. https://teamcovenant.com/learning/star-wars-x-wing/everything-need-know-x-wing-second-edition-x2-reboot

from the TC blog article......

"So for many of us the first wave will consist of ships that we already have. We are pretty sure that these re-releases will still have new content in them though, like pilots and upgrades that are not in the Conversion Kits, as well as the aforementioned re-sculpt factor. We already know that the new X-wing has moving S-Foils and the new Y-wing looks incredible, so…"

The impression I’m getting is that, really, upgrade cards are getting the biggest changes. Both in how the function in general and to how specific ones are going to work. It is clear A LOT of existing upgrades will just go away because their functionality (and ship fixes) are going to be baked right in. So we really don’t know how many upgrade cards are going to be “necessary”.
