Is this where I step off?

By Rat of Vengence, in X-Wing

Hey all, I'll just state straight up; this isn't a whine or a rant. The game needed a revamp, and what they have planned sounds really interesting.

That said though....I'm concerned about the investment that will be required to keep up here. Five conversion kits, and that won't cover all my miniatures. The new expansions have new pilots, and are sure to have new upgrades, so I guess I'll need one of each of those.

So, is anyone else thinking, from a cost perspective, 'This is where I step off'?

This is basically a NEW GAME.

Did you like X-Wing before? If you did, like you really did, then this is an entirely new game based upon everything you loved in the old one - only better.

The costs are imho trivial. Conversion kits are cheaper than foam to store the plastic crack. ?

Oh, I hear you, and you are right. But the 'old' game was bought over a fairly long period of time, and if I want to be competitive (which isn't actually necessary, but I'd like to) I'll need to outlay some significant money for a game I already have, which is sorta my point.

I don't mind the upgrade kits. It's the only realistic way to revamp all the mechanics like they have done in order to improve the game's fundamental flaws. I hope that covers all the cards in the new blisters of the old ships though. If they have unique cards not found in the upgrade kits when they redo, say, the Y-wing blister that would suck but as it is I don't think that'll be the case?

I hear ya, and I hope you can figure it out.

I bought A LOT of my ships by selling plasma, haha.

Everyone has to make their own personal decision on finances, but if you decide you absolutely wanted 2x each kit and the core set right away that’s a $350 investment if bought at full MSRP for an entire 14 Wave 3 factions miniatures game. I’m pretty sure a single decent sized Team Yankee or Flames of war army will cost me more than that to buy so from a minis perspective that seems like a relatively great bargain for the amount of content. I’m probably not buying 2x each day 1 though myself. Starting with probably 1x each then eBay, below MSRP stores, trades, or new ship models if I want them can fill in the rest.

I think people are going to need to pace themselves rather than go OHMYGOOD $300!!!!!1111

for example, you don't have to fly 8 tie fighters. you could fly four fighters, and some combination of interceptors/strikers depending on what you own

we gotta see what they all look like in 2.0, and THEN decide to invest or not

From what I've been reading every re-release of any old ship contains NO NEW cards that are not found in the conversion kits. You don't have to buy the re-releases.

For example:

"The TIE Advanced x1 Expansion Pack also contains a few entirely new cards that have never before appeared in the game's first edition. These new cards and associated punchboard are included in the Galactic Empire Conversion Kit for the benefit of veteran players!"

Not only do we NOT need to buy the expansions, but the conversion kits have completely new cards in them (as opposed to remakes).

yes it is, and all are encouraged to do the same.

Well the rebel players will definitely want the the s-foil x-wing.

I think people should try to strategically share purchases with friends and family and/or trade. E.g. I think I can get by without the Rebel conversion (between Saw's and Core), but I could really use a Wedge card. Hopefully someone who buys two Rebel kits will be willing to trade.

Hmmm, well spotted. I hope that remains the case for future releases. I was impressed when I read Saws Renegades has old AND new card sets, so that'll work in both editions.

Well they did say something in the interviews that...I'm sure I'm parsing wrong.

The gist of it is that you 'don't have to buy cross-faction to get key upgrade cards you need'.

I have no idea how they plan to pull that off, unless the set of upgrade cards released in any given wave going forward is static across all ships released in that wave.

Oh sweet. That was my only real reservation. Everything looks like X-wing only better. Can't wait.

Feroph seems SO MUCH BETTER in his 2.0 incarnation

of course, he's on a medium base which is harder to control with ailerons, but still

do you really need a 1:1 conversion ratio?

Okay, I have 10 A-wings in my collection. Does not mean I need 3 kits. chances are I will fly 4 max. I'm sure SOMEONE in my local community of 20+ regulars that are buying in will give me or trade me or sell me a fourth A-wing.

We have no idea what squad building will be like. Maybe you can only field 3 a-wings with the revamped rules.

I looked closer, and if the rules are close enough for me to fly lists I currently enjoy (hint, I don't fly meta) and ships I enjoy... I don't really need more than 1 upgrade kit per faction.

Things I'd need extra of personally (based on current ship love)

+2 A-Wings

+2 B-Wings

+1 E-Wing (maybe?)

+1 Gunboat

Nah. However you look at it, it's going to be a significant (for my hobby budget) added cost to just keep playing the game at any competitive level. My hobby budget has other demands upon it too you know :P

Again, not a whinge, just thought I'd see if others are wrestling with this too.

how much do you spend on a wave of ships?

I spent over $200 between the Gunboat/Phantom II/BSF17/Silencer... didn't buy a Kimo. Since Guns for Hire came out right around the same time, and I live in Canada... go for $250.

This will most likely take place during a normal wave drop, and (I know I'm wrong) they should be smart enough to not throw out a ton of extra expansions at the same time as v2.0 that are all new things.

My hobby budget is stretched pretty bad too... Legion isn't cheap...

Yup, as soon as i saw conversion kits for 1.0 ships and no need to rebuy my precious ships to get upgrades or pilots I was all in

But will I still need to buy a new core set? ?

Yes, it appears damage deck+ templates are different. At least if you pre-order they're getting you an alternate art damage deck.

Don't remember me of that. This wave was terrible, it was like it was like $250 and I did not buy the Silencer nor the Kimo. And Guns for Hire is on top of that. ^_^
Stupid, precious gunboats. How do I love you.

They said that the new worlds templates are compatible, so it does seem like you should be able to add the markings of the new templates with a new paint job. Relevant especially for 3rd party acrylic templates.
