2.0: Are you in or are you out?

By Jadotch, in X-Wing

at first I was prob in, reluctantly. Now after much more info has come out, I'm totally in. And thank goodness most of the playgroup from the local store is most likely in as well.

Looks like pilot upgrades are ‘locked in’ (Kad Solus has Fearless for example).

...Think I’m out.

Been fun though!

I think I’m (back) in. Fell out for a long time due to starting a family (that darn kid!) but this looks like it’s addressed a lot of concerns I’ve had of toxic builds and power combos.

They aren’t locked in, those are for quick games to teach people the mechanics

Ah really? Hmm. Ok then.

List building is a big part of any game for me (netrunner, L5R etc) so if you’re correct I’m maybe being swayed back?

Not sure why FFG are being coy about pilot abilities and the like. I’d rather they were more upfront about what ships are going to be capable of.

... All 200? In 24 hours?

Why not. They know what they are. If they want people to believe 2.0 is worth it, full transparency would be good.

You do understand that I actually posited two questions, right?

No offense -- you know I like you, man -- but demanding FFG reveal the entire game in 24 hours is just dumb.

Doubtful.

I have no TFA era ships at all, would save a lot money there. Some if the new content looks nice! And current game is very bloated.

But, we are at about 690 cards right now, no way they managed to balance that with their design history and questionable playtesting. E.g. force mechanics sounds thematic and fun, but also high risk for OP NPE respectively again putting all the good stuff on the top dogs all over again. Probably, 1.5 years from now yhey have messed up again.

Also, how quickly will costs and stuff change? Some of the back and forward rulings of the past reversing and changing rules changes, and really stupid nerf decisions....a pain to remember correct some of the more intricate changes.

I absolutely do not like the app. Do not want to be forced to use a smartphone just for the game. Do not want to have one app for every company (as it is so vogue right now). Want to have a board game, not electronics. Already annoyed about people only bringing their list on one tiny mobile screen, requesting me to memorise their whole list. Going to be worse in the future.

Really annoyed that the core stuff is NOT in the conversions. I have some 40-50 ships in 3 factions. But I also have 3 children, and me playing. This is going to hurt badly moneywise. Could have been enough with 3 conversion kits. Now it means how many cores? Wtf...

Btw, none of the kids has a smartphone.

There's a web app that will be available and a pdf that will be updated periodically that you can print out for list building.

You don't need a smart phone.... Why do people just scim over the fact that there will be a web based application you can use on your computer?

If there’s an app, there’s a database. Shouldn’t be that difficult really. I fear though it will be a drip drip of information.

Why does everyone think that in a game where people complained about an FAQ are now going to be just fine with a required PDF to play the game?

If we hate the idea of a web app, we will not be appeased by a friggin' PDF.

That's exactly what there will be. It's Marketing 101.

Furthermore, not only is a slow-but-steady release of information important to build and maintain enthusiasm, for every person demanding "all the info, now!" there are 10 who would be overwhelmed by a 100% info dump. (I'm frankly surprised the info dump yesterday was an huge as it was.)

It's the required electronic interface that people don't like.

And an actuary table of points costs does not make life better. You just built into the ENTIRE GAME what people didn't like before--the card does not contain the correct information.

The app serves FFG and the tournament crowd. It is an impediment to many others.

Citation needed. It's not an impediment to me, in any mode of play.

And, just so I'm very clear, those very few of y'all complaining about this, you must not currently use squad builders, huh? I mean, squad builders obvious "serve FFG and the tournament crowd," right?

C'mon, man. You're better than this. I am genuinely baffled by your animus to something that is simply 99% positive.

I really want to be in, but I'm waiting to see how essential the app is. If it turns out to be all but compulsory for playing most formats of the game then I may be forced out.

Now is the winter of our discontent.

@Jeff Wilder, it's is both 100% positive, and 100% a new game.

The fact that it's 100% a new game makes me 0% certain I'm up for another collectible game.

Because in a lot of ways, it's starting over.

Oh yes!

In!

Let's go!

Yes, and thank God.

In the ways that it's not starting over, I'm flat-out thrilled that I still get to use my 140 or so models for a cost of only a couple of dollars each.

In.

its still going to be hundreds of dollars for you to update your collection. each faction pack comes with components for 2 to 3 of each ship in the faction, so to fly 3 defenders it takes 2 conversion packs, etc.

Totally in. I can't wait to put TIE Fighters on the table again against X-wings, A-wings, and B-wings.

My enthusiasm for the current 1.0 was almost 0. I haven't played at all in 2018. I haven't bought a ship since wave 11.

As I said, I "get to use my 140 or so models for a cost of only a couple of dollars each."

Here in the Bay Area, I'm organizing a Conversion Kit Exchange, so we can trade conversion kit ships as needed to enable buying the minimum number of Conversion Kits. I expect to have to buy five CKs, initially, with lots of ships left over, but if we achieve efficiency with the Exchange, that will drop to four CKs. I'm tracking the Exchange via Google Sheets.

For example, my net shortfall for Rebels, Empire, and Scum -- buy one CK each -- is only 16 ships.

I 'm assuming that every ship will wind up with a 2.0 expac, so it could be that you need 1 conversion + 1 expac.

However, do you know when that will be?

Nope.

So, you will buy 2 conversions, have 1 dial too many, then need an expac in a year and have 2 dials and one Defender too many.

I'm in. Looks like I'll finally head back to the tournaments again. I can't wait for that Rules Reference pdf and the App to drop.

I'll be doing the Scum only (for a start at least). I'll get the new S&V sculpts eventually, but I won't be buying other factions... I'll suggest to my friends and family to give me other factions on my Birthday or Holiday gift giving season.
