What about upgrades? (and more ...)

By falveryn, in X-Wing

So we keep our ship and pilots relevant for the modest sum of $150. But, as we all know, the most coveted assets are not pilots, but the upgrade cards.

-Are upgrades from v1 legal in v2?

-Does the upgrade kit come with exactly all upgrades present in the respective v2 expansions? If not, we will be forced to buy v2 expansions just for the cards, making the upgrade too costly.

*UPDATE: Conversion kits come with 'over a hundred' upgrades, cards that will come in v2 corresponding expansions. While specific quantity is shady (useful ships getting few copies to force 2x kit purchase), it is a good direction.

- Not all rebel alliance or galactic empire ships are upgraded. Saw's and Reapers just lost a ton of appeal. Why try to play with expensive x-wings if they will be fixed in 2.0 for less money? Wave 14 comes with both v1 and v2 content.

-Upgrade singles, if not compatible, just lost a ton of market value (palp, c-3po, etc). If compatible, their value will skyrocket due to them being useful in 14-pocket pages. I highly doubt compatibility due to different size and the upgrade kits themselves coming with a ton of upgrade cards.

-They need to announce if upgrades are compatible right now so people make timely informed decisions. Not saying anything and then making wave 14 upgrades worthless would leave a bad taste.

-Will stores be forced to run v2 tournaments instead of v1? Will my chance to play in one depend on how much money locals have for most of them to upgrade to v2? I think we need some time to get the upgrades, all that cost out of the blue is too unexpected.

Balance:

-Boba Fett crew no longer discards an enemy upgrade ? , but some upgrades being shows increases confidence that the kit will include at least some v2 upgrade cards. Love dual arc for Lambda.

-The meta is in a good place: we have a very diverse meta, with rebels being higher powered but still allowing other factions to compete and even win sometimes. Scum has some stuff that is still very good.

-I still see the dreaded reinforce token in one of the upgrade kits.

-Millenium Falcon has a two faced mobile arc, FFG killed 360? Not a bad thing, since people kept complaining about 360 arcs. If the app-required point and slots will be patched allowing both weaker ships to become better without having to release a fix pack or op ships to be nerfed without labyrinthine FAQ's, it would be ideal. They should still allow printouts of such changes to be able to play without an electronic device, imho.

-Better prize support is appreciated, but we didn't need a v2 for that.

-PS9+ capped at PS6 seems to alleviate some complaints.

Accessory related:

-Are they changing the upgrade card size format? I love my 14-pocket pages, a squadron wouldn't fit a regular tournament table.

*UPDATE: Product info shows only grey sleeves on non-core expansions and upgrade kits. Images from slideshow also show them to be standard sized cards. Table space will definitely be an issue. Who really needs a half a card sized icon?

-I assume all v1 templates, dial and dice stay the same so no need for another set of acrylics.

-I assume v1 obstacles and bombs and all that also work in v2.

Both of those packs will come with 2.0 stuff as well as 1.0 stuff. 1.0 will still be relevant, and I think it will be worth it to keep your 1.0 stuff just for fun.

Eventually, yes. But why buy it specifically for the x-wing fix if x-wings will be fixed in 2.0 anyways.

For when you decide to break out the old 1.0 stuff for a fun game at Star Wars night at your local store

My points are obviously aimed at competitive play. Prize support is on full steam for v2, so it makes it less attractive to keep supporting v1 and for players to play it unless they can't afford the upgrade, which is why I said that I don't like being dependent on how many of the local community switches to 2.0. I know they are not mutually exclusive, and even 1.0 may be more fun to play than in the early 2.0 waves which has less stuff to play with. But I think they still need to announce loudly they are also supporting v1 with the same quality of tournament kits if they intend to not leave wave 14 customers in the dust. And if they don't keep supporting v1 100% (which is very unlikely, since new players will play v2 and old players will only keep migrating to v2), it will force v1 competitive players to switch at one point in the future, thus all the arguments.

For casual play I don't really care at all and most arguments will not make sense in that context.

The conversion kit descriptions state that they come with more than one hundred upgrade cards in addition to pilot cards. They specifically stated that content from the new ship packs is included in the upgrade kits so no reason to assume you would need to buy new expansions just for upgrades.

You might need new expansions for new upgrades though ;)

Except I'm not sure how the app integrates with stuff you need to reach, like the new "charge tokens" that track expendible upgrades

Not sure if you never need the cards or not

It really sounds like they are trying very hard to not make old players buy new expansions just for cards. It looks like the hook for that is that there are new sculpts coming for older ships - Y-Wing, movable foils X-Wing, rotating Fang.
