Please don't make the app a requirement

By sirjorj, in X-Wing

The heavy dependence on the new app is the only big concern I have. I got rid of the smartphone over a year ago and won't go back. I play tabletop games to get away from video screens. If this is just a handy companion to the game, cool. But if it is a requirement for tournament play, I'm probably out of tournaments... unless they make a linux version. :)

There is a browser version.

There is a quick build list in the box.

App is not necessary.

Tournaments, specifically, are supposed to have a subapp in the builder. That's probably going to be the most difficult part.

There will be a browser version, and there will be cost PDFs available as well.

+1 for this. I bet they won't be making a Windows Phone app, it'll be Android and IOS only

Toward the end of the announcement they mentioned having the app based materials available in a printable PDF for players "without reliable internet, or something".

For playing at home it seems you won't need it. You can just use the quick-build cards which are likely meant to make balanced games fairly quickly and speed up changing squads around on the fly.

As I understand it it's for tweaking squad point costs. So you'll need the builder to make squads but I doubt you'll need it to play the game.

The more I think about it the more I don't like being APP dependent either. Especially with the fluid/amorphic. I understand why they are doing it, but I don't want to refer to an app to see if any given card will work on my favorite squad lists.

I don't like the idea that some thing like Juke will cost 4 on an E-Wing but 3 on an X-Wing and 1 on an A-Wing. (Just a made up example.)

I often look at a new card and know instantly what I want to use it on, that will be lost and for me, some of the excitement of new upgrades and such.

I actually like that fluidity (NPE combos can take focused nerfs without hurting other things) - I just hope they execute it right. If they publish this data in xml/csv feeds so other programs can digest it, that would be fantastic. I just don't want to be limited to Win/Mac/ios/And because I really don't like any of those platforms. A web site to it could work, but just opening the info and letting apps read it would be ideal.

The app is brilliant. This allows making all point values dynamic. For everyone griping, understand that this will make XWV2 potentially much longer lived than V1. This forum has been screeching for over 2 years that the X-Wing is a gimpy ship. Releasing fixes to unbalanced ships takes up design space and production windows. Now? X-wings are overpriced for what they do? Drop two points - push out app upgrade v3.426. Done. X-wings back in play.

I like list crafting ... this helps me know if I want an expansion or not (or how many.) Quick builds just sound dumb to me, I want to be able to instantly form a squad in my head like I can now. I am by no means perfect, but I have most of the cards roughly memorized for at least the Rebels. I get them wrong sometimes, but overall I know the cards pretty **** well and what will fit were. What I need to strip from my list to fit in a new card.

The app seems to unpredictable of what costs what on which pilot.

I understand why they did it, but it will just adds clunkiness to building a list for me.

There's a web version, it'll make all the difference of visiting a different website for me. I never build lists with the actual cards except when I'm actually at tourneys.

Making point values dynamic is brilliant. Making a computer a requirement to play the game is not, especially if you are limited to a specific platform.

I couldn't agree more, this is probably the only thing so far I don't actually like the sound of (except maybe the brush off Epic got in the Hyperspace report)
