another question sorry about force powers

By druchii, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

hey guys sorry for all the questions, couldn't find an answer in the book so asking you guys here, i'm starting a new star wars rp this weekend and 3 of my group are having jedi, is there a limit to how many force powers you can have? or start with? thanks for any answers

Yes, there is! The limit is the number of Force powers you can buy with your XP :D !

Okay, cheekiness aside, no, there is no strict limit. If you have the XP to spend, you can always buy a new Force power if you want. However, characters are advised that Force powers by themselves are not entirely useful. I mean, they are, but without the Force rating to use them effectively, usually at least 2 or 3, then you'll rarely be able to use more than the basic power. So instead of spending all your XP on Force powers right away, it's usually better to balance spending XP between powers, talents, and skills.

Most characters are going to want to do about 50% of their XP towards talents, 25% towards powers, and 25% towards skills. Powers require talents to get Force rating boosts to be more, well, powerful, and skills to use the power successfully when it's being resisted by the big bad guys, so you can't ignore any of the branches. My personal character is almost entirely bent on the "Force wizard" archetype (although she'd hate the term!), so she splits her xp 40% talents, 40% powers, and 20% skills.

But then, because of the level of starting XP the GM gave, she started the game with a Force rating of 4, so she doesn't need as much of her new XP going towards buying up talents anymore :P !

thanks, much appreciated

A word of caution or clarification regarding the force power trees (maybe it is clear to everyone else, but I've seen numerous people confused by this). The first sentence in the top box of each tree is a general description of the over-all force power. It is not a description of what you can mechanically do when you have the basic power.

For example, the Influence starts with "The Force user may attempt to guide, shape, an even twist the thoughts and feelings of others". Narratively, anything done with this power involves the manipulation of thoughts and feeling. But the basic power does not allow you to do the "These are not the droids you are looking for" trick. Mechanically, it allows you to inflict strain by spending force points, and nothing more.

The basic power of Bind prevents targets from taking maneuvers, not from "acting". The basic power of Manipulate makes one character unable to perceive another character (with limits). It doesn't allow a character to create general illusions.
