Are 4 X-Wings Viable

By BenDay, in X-Wing Squad Lists

After playing a few games with the new fix for the X-Wing I have some thoughts, Below is the list.

Wedge with PTL, R2, and the fix (integrated astro, renegade retro and s-foil) - 30 pts

Luke with R2D2, VI and the fix - 30 pts

2 x Rookies with FAA and the fix -40 pts

Basically pre fix this list was A) impossible because of the double mods and B) would be 118 points if you consider the S-Foils to be a vector thrust card (but s-foils are better, the T-Roll is great)

S-Foil card - Didn't really use the closed side of the card, with FAA it is a bit redundant. I only used it with Wedge and Luke on turn one, after that s-Foils were set to attack position.

4 X Wings is a lot of fire power, the point reduction is huge (18 points), granted my club doesn't normally fly meta lists. But the X Wings were destroying everything pretty quick, they also have 24 hit points with 2 green dice and so didn't really die all that quick.

The talon roll is the hidden gem of the fix because it allows your ships to fan out when they flip around for their second pass

I really like PTL on Wedge with the R2, now that he has three actions to take.

What are your experiences?

In my first game with the new S-Foils, all three of my ships (Wedge, Poe, Luke) were stressed and a PS11 Dengar was coming around to wipe someone out. So I closed Luke's S-foils and dialed a 2 bank in plus boost forward. I got the block and Dengar wound up sitting on a rock for two turns while Wedge and Poe burned him down. It was glorious. I see a lot of people on the boards saying that you'll basically only close S-foils to run away/regen, but they give you so much more flexibility than that! You won't close them often but having options can come in clutch.

Regarding the list: my Poe is exactly 40 points, so I have been thinking about swapping him out for two Rookies (or the Zealots when they come out, to free up even more points for Luke/Wedge) which would basically wind up being almost the same as your list. A quartet of jousting X-wings with two blockers and two aces seasoned to taste seems like a solid list to me.

PTL Wedge with all the greens is an interesting thought! I usually go for Predator or VI but I'm really tempted to try your version.

I only have one game to go on so far, but I think they are not.

X wings are still just X wings. The buff is nice but they lack action economy and 2 agi with no autothrusters makes them very susceptible to turrets.

Yeah, it is hard to stop damage with 2 agility. Interestingly I did play one game against Dengar and some poon pirates, I ended up winning because I killed Dengar pretty quick... but maybe it is all moot now that 2nd ed is out.

I think you’re right we’ll see what 2.0 means for the future of the X wing.

have you seen the team covenant demo on you tube?

I have started it, I’ll finish it later tonight.

Seems fun to me!

Tarn in hard to kill and decently offensive, Hobbie hits hard, Garven helps out action economy, Biggs draws fire

I flew against Hobbie, Wes, Biggs, and Stressbug Ezra the other day, and it felt strong. I think there's a strong chance Ezra is better than the 4th X-Wing, however the rest of the squad is built.

I don't think I can recommend Garven, though. Jek Porkins with Snap Shot is the same cost, and I think he'd be a lot better. Crack Shot front-loading damage is nice on somewhat squishy X-Wings, and he's able to clear stress on a K-Turn or T-Roll, which should be handy. Between him and Hobbie, you'd have two ships turning around without stress and with mods. That's pretty nice.

Can you post that list?

Indeed. Jek and Hobbie are a pretty good tag team. I've seen it with Jek with Expertise - both X-wings get an effective focus/target lock when talon rolling, which is nasty given that most of their opponents (if they're more or less matching them) may well have no tokens at all.

Just occurred to me that Jek with Targeting Astromech instead of FAA might also work. Pull the red, take a TL, clear the stress with the pilot ability, and still take a focus. Expertise is great, don't get me wrong, but Targeting/Crack Shot is a lot cheaper on a 5-HP ship with 2 greens that can damage himself with his pilot ability.

Ezra (Snap Shot, R3-A2, Hera) 22

Biggs (Flight Assist Astromech, Renegade Refit, Integrated Astromech, Servomotor S-Foils) 24

Hobbie (Targeting Astromech, RR, IA, SSF) 25

Wes Janson (VI, FAA, RR, IA, SSF) 28

Stress control, token removal, potential for Biggs to mess with opponent's plans a little, and a pretty healthy amount of red dice. Biggs is probably pretty flexible. First game, it was Garven, and my opponent never really felt he was worth it.

True. I always find myself wanting to put R5-D8 on him to fix damage, but honestly you should only self-damage one time in 3; I should probably just suck it up.
