Possible Upgrade Cards in Night of the Zealot Redux

By Jobu, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Okay so we know each class will get 2 upgraded cards from the core set. We also know one of them will be the core set talent card (thats 9 possibilities)

Assuming that it won't be a card that already has an upgraded version that is a pretty limited set of cards. That's a bit of an assumption because they can just make a level 3 version of .45 auto.

Core set cards without an upgraded version:

Guardian: Dodge, Dynamite Blast, Evidence and Machete

Mystic: Drawn to the Flame, Forbidden Knowledge, Holy Rosary

Rogue: Backstab, Burglary, Elusive

Seeker: Barricade, Doc Chris, Medical Texts, Mind Over Matter, Old Book of Lore, Research Librarian, Working a Hunch.

Survivor: This has been spoiled, its Rabbit's Foot.

My thoughts: almost all of the events could be changed to a L2 "and draw a card effect" but I find those boring so I hope we don't see them.

What would you like to see?

Guardian:

I'm still longing for a more powerful melee weapon, as I'm currently playing Zoey and for flavour-reason, I'm doing her melee only with a fire axe and a machete. I'd love an upgraded machete.

Dodge, I can't really see anything interesting to do. Evidence, I suspect, could just be finding two clues, or a clue and a card. Dynamite blast has a lot of places to go. Cheaper, more powerful, less damage to allies...

Mystic:

Forbidden Knowledge would be nice. A version that's useful to not-Agnes. Or a blessed version of the holy rosary, now that Father Mateo is coming out?

Rogue: Backstab, please. MOre damage would be nice, or a combat bonus. For elusive, I could see something like also exhausting an enemy.

Seeker: Christopher Milan is already really strong, probably not that. I'd like Medical Text,we can use more powerful books for the Librarian, plus more healing options in general. Not sure where to go with it, though. 2 damage might be too much. No chance to fail is a bit boring.

Guardian: my guess would be a cheaper Dynamite Blast. Would be interesting if it were instead X cost for boostable damage. Alternatively, Evidence! could be an extra clue for overkilling a monster.

Mystic: Forbidden Knowledge could add card draw when you take a secret. Drawn to the Flame could be draw X encounter cards then discover X clues. I don’t know if that would be an upgrade...

Rogue: Burglary that either adds card draw or lets you keep the clue would be my guess.

Seeker: my money would be a tome for Daisy. Old Book of Lore could search more cards (e.g. 6 instead of 3) or become like Scrying to also be able to target the Encounter Deck. Medical Texts could heal either an extra damage or a horror on a success of 2 or more.

Guardian: Machete's a staple already, so I imagine it'll be one of the others. Probably a cheaper or safer Dynamite Blast, since that's a pretty unique effect that could do with a higher-level version.

Mystic: Could be any of these, honestly. I'll arbitrarily choose Drawn to the Flame. The upgraded version lets you search the top X cards of the encounter deck for your draw.

Rogue: Burglary could use the love. I'd give it a "succeed by X" effect to keep its Roguish theme. Maybe "Search the top X cards of your deck and draw a card, where X is the amount you succeeded by."

Seeker: I'd like to make Barricade better, but I'm not sure how it could be salvaged without becoming overpowered. I'll go with a level 3 Librarian with "[Free Trigger] Exhaust Research Librarian: The next Tome Asset you play this phase gains Fast."

Survivor: I would like to see Baseball Bat upgraded to having it break only on auto fails, possibly added value, and conditional extra damage.

I would've put an upgraded Baseball Bat or Cunning Distraction ahead of the new Rabbit's Foot that we are getting.

My guesses, biased based off what I would like to see

Guardian: Evidence! - Guardians have many ways to kill things, but are typically weak in this area aside from Roland. A higher level Evidence! might make them a little more usueful in the investigatiing endeavors.

Seeker: Mind over Matter. I believe its probably going to be Old Book of Lore unfortunately, but I would love to see Mind over Matter get an upgraded version to help on those occasions where Seekers are forced to fight.

Rogue: Backstab. Rogue is in a decent place right now; I believe they are very close to survivor in all around power. An upgraded Backstab would be nice to see, since it seems like it would be a signature Rogue card.

Mystic: Fearless. A Fearless that either heals another horror or does another beneficial effect on passing a skill test would really help mystics out.

Like, hypothetically speaking, a level 2 upgrade with an extra Willpower pip that heals an extra horror if you succeed by two?

That would be ok.

I combined two existing cards lol

Wait @C2K you know about fearless II right?! Just confusion here, I'm guessing!

I too would love higher level backstab, mostly just to see where they'd take a 3-cost, 3-damage event! Evidence, MoM and OBoL are all reasonable contenders too in their respective factions. Mystic is actually proving the trickiest for me.... a higher level rosary, perhaps? Soaking more horror?

It seems Fearless 2 is in Where Doom Awaits. ?

In light of that, I suppose Forbidden Knowledge would be the way to go. Its the easiest to upgrade. I suppose Rosary gaining an ability would be possible too... if it just had a +1 Sanity soak I don't think I would be interested in it.

Guardian: upgraded dynamite for MORE Damage!!

Mystic: Upgraded mind wipe, not sure how to fix that one but, though I wouldn't say no to an upgraded forbidden knowledge

seeker: Medical texts or barricade

Rogue: Burglary

Those are my hopes for the upgraded cards.

Currently wondering how the upgraded Talent cards will work. In the preview picture they have a cost of ‘-‘, which would normally mean Permanent but they don’t have the ‘Permanent’ keyword on the card. Anyone have any ideas? My guess so far is that the preview picture is just wrong, but there could be something interesting going on there!

An upgraded mind wipe could attach to a non-elite monster, permanently removing its text. Then you could use it to leave a hunter monster behind.

I also vote for the inclusion of an upgraded Evidence. Guardians have too few ways of getting clues.

That card would almost have to be at least level 3

Seeker’s Medical Text idea. I’ve played a lot of Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, would it be worth it if on a success you’d also shuffle a random non-weakness card from your discard pile back into your deck?

I’ve just read The Dirge of Reason, Roland Banks’ book, and I’m not sure that reducing the friendly damage on Dynamite is going to happen.
