Death Star Turbo Laser - scratchbuild

By Noosart, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Third and last (for now ;) ) of my scratch build projects, the Turbo Laser tower as we all know from the trench run on the first Death Star.

Since the shape is quite simple, I just started out by creating a simple box with slant walls.

Since I wanted the turret to be able to turn, I sawed off the top.

Then came the fiddly part  scribing the panel lines. I did not do them in one go, but took a few days. Or else I would have gone mad.

After all panel lines were done, I needed to glue some tiny bits for even more detail.

Since I wanted to have 6 towers, I decided to create a silicon mold and cast the other towers in resin.

The cast was 'okay' but 100% good. All those bits results in many air bubbles. And the barrels were also too thin to get the resin all the way down. But at least it saved me a lot of work creating all the towers from scratch.

Nicely done!!! :D

Good gravy!

Nice work. How do these resin ones, compare to some of those card-stock ones i've seen?

How much did it cost to make them?

As you have read, I've build these completely from scratch, so I've made them as I wanted them to be. The base is 4x4cm, as big as a small ship base.

I still have the mould, that I used for casting and made them slightly hollow to save on the resin. So the costs... probably around 3 euro's worth of resin. But when working with resin, you also have some cleaning as well. So I guess it's about 5 or 6 euro's on resin and labour.

The only problem are the barrels. They are too small to be casted nicely. I had to put on a new piece of styreen tubing to fix that. Quite an easy fix actually.
