Advanced Careers: Do you have to buy the primary characteristics?

Beuller? Beuller??

Do PC's just get +1 to a characteristic for just changing careers or do they have to buy it? I dont' have my books.

jh

On this, I would say they don't get the +1 at all. The only section of the rulebook that mentions +1 to primary characteristics is during character creation. At all times afterwards, you must spend advancement points to advance in characteristics, but you do not have to advance in primary characteristics to take a new career.

In actuality, nothing is required. You can switch out of a career without taking a single advance.

If you want to be able to count the career as "completed", you need to spend 10 advancements while you are in that career. What you spend them on is up to you.

After character creation there is no +1 to primary characteristic for any career, advanced or other-wise, the only thing a primary characteristic in a new career does for you is let you buy that characteristic at the in-career rate.

And it also determines which characteristics you can buy a Fortune Die advance for, per page 37.
