State of the Game and Lore

By RPLev, in X-Wing

Hello everyone. I wanted to ask questions on two different topics/subjects. I am going to guess I ask them here. The other sub forums did not look like the place for these questions

The first one is about the State of X-Wing TMG. I quit the game awhile back as I was unhappy with the tournament scene in my area. Too many people were running cheese lists just to upset people. When I said something about it, I was instantly hated for it. I recently went back to the stores near my area (not the ones that were a problem) because of a project I am working on related to X-Wing. I have asked for help in so many different places (in this area), and I have found it hard to find anyone willing to help

One of the people at a store luckily said they would take a look. Then they went in to a long explanation as to why I am finding it difficult to find help (localy). The short version is that they were saying X-Wing TMG is in hibernation. A lot of people have quit because they felt that FFG has failed them (in terms of balancing the game). I haven't been around in a long time but, the explanation does make sense (in a way). Since I quit, 4 Stores have closed their doors to X-Wing TMG (due to a lack of players). This is only in my area of Texas though. Is this happening else where? Is it true that players feel this way?

The other thing I am wondering about is the Lore. I was looking at the lore because it also relates to the project. I came to realize after reading so much lore that X-Wing TMG may reach it's limit of the ships it can add. There are some ships, or pilots that do not have a lot of lore to go on. The few that do have lore to go on, don't even have art work attached to them (in some cases). Is art work important? Is the lack of lore going to be an issue?

I am interested in hearing what you all have to say. Thank you if you respond!

typo

Lore is not the problem. I can think of dozens of ships and dozens of characters I wish were in the game.

As for art, FFG has their own source for that. The art gets made, not found.

The biggest level of complaint with the game is tournament play. If stores would set up Star Wars themed scenarios for people to play, I think people would have more fun.

Hibernation is a great term.

Enthusiasm has come to a slow but not quite dead condition here.

I still play but I don't 'care' any more if that makes sense.

But not dead.

In the future if the turrets and the regen get under control and listbuilding opens up I could see a personal revitalization. And I'm sure the players here would return.

Darth: What do you mean Scenarios? Are you referring to things like what I was seeing before I quit? I forget the name but, it was something to do with no same ship, no same pilot. I can't remember 100%. Or are you talking about Mission type of stuff?

Velvet: I completely understand. At this point I am only Testing FFG content (if I am brought on). It's the only thing I care about at this point. I am tired of trying to play on a casual, or competitive level. I want to use my experience to help make the game better

I can agree with the Turret situation. I did notice that Auto Thrusters are your only hope on a few ships. Given how statistically bad Green Dice is, it's hard to rely on it though. I am unsure of how to fix that problem as a hole. You can DM me if you want to (here or on Discord). I am always happy to take a look and see if I can do something about it

This. Technically I believe it's called 'cinematic play'

So many people play tournaments or at least 'competitive games' with access to vassal, and the internet community is so big, that effective squad lists get identified quickly, and with the internet both providing games and an easy source of lists to draw on, ideas are shared and copied quickly.

the thing is that the end goal of almost all these lists is to win a 6-asteroid, 75 minute victory-point-off 'first one to die loses'. Cinematic play missions often either change the goal completely or dramatically shift the mission conditions. I've played quite a bit of cinematic play over the years and can assure you that if you blithely take the latest meta list into a cinematic mission event, you can find yourself horribly outclassed where a list which doesn't rely on card trick XYZ wouldn't.

We've done quite a few mission evenings at our store, and there's always someone who brings 'that list' and regrets doing so..

  • An Attani Mindlink list who found himself the defender in Preystalker and had to start his entire list facing the wrong way and double-stressed.
  • A Fairship Rebels list in Outer Rim Raid who had to deploy a ship as a 'flanker', half the board away from his mutually supporting range 1 bubble.
  • Imperial Aces trying to win Political Escort when their own survival is irrelevant and two attacks per turn won't stop auto-spawning reinforcements getting at the slow, un-evasive shuttle.

Having multiple scenarios over an evening with the same list forces players to adapt to the scenario with tactics, not list-building. And it offers some refreshing and surprising abilities. If you've never played it, the prototype from Cutting The Cord is truly terrifying once its systems get spun up. Try it with a First Order Test Pilot and some expendable TIE/fo to protect the facilities.

Everything @Magnus Grendel said, plus, well shoot, anything!

I assume your talking FLGS hosted but not FFG sanctioned play. So, play at 125 points one night.

Battle of Yavin: x and y vs TIE and Adv only.

Battle of endor adds a, b and squints to the mix.

We do team play at 100 points per player.

The advantages are that changing the themes keeps people on their toes (they won't have practiced the list to death), lets people get creative, gets ships on the table that aren't seen much, and makes it feel more narrative.

The main disadvantage is that players can't just drop in. They need to know the night's theme. OTOH , I'm sure that can easily be posted on the stores website.
