Rules holes?

By James McMurray, in Runewars

So I just got Runewards, and haven't even opened the box yet. But, since it's a FFG product I can be pretty sure it has some rules holes in it that aren't answered by the FAQ. Are there a lot (like Descent) or just a few (like BSG)? What are they?

Thanks!

I have a document of a bunch of rulings from Corey (the designer) over on BoardGameGeek. Go to the site, look up "Runewars", and scroll down to the game's File section and you should find it. I'm going to be updating it in the next few days.

There are a lot of questions/answers in the document. However, most of them aren't really from "rules holes" themselves (IE, flaws with the base, core mechanics), but rather a lot of them deal with interactions between specific cards in specific situations, situations that the rulebook really can't cover without talking about every single card in depth.

Since all the rulings come from Corey, I think it's a good pseudo-official companion to the official FAQ.

Imo, most questions in the document and the FAQ can be answered by applying rules as written. However, since it is a FFG game I checked some questions nonetheless ;) But imo Runewars is the epic-box board game from FFG with the best rulebook.

Agreed. I think this is FFG's best rulebook yet.

I read them last night, and have to agree. They're definitely the most well-written rules I've seen from FFG.

Yeah. I can certainly understand the concern given FFG's history with rules, but more recent games have shown significant improvement on rulebooks. Runewars is very well done and although there are certainly some muddy combinations, it seems limited to specific situations, not general rulings (which is good.)

yeah, and they have done a good job of putting out FAQs... they just need to update it.

The biggest factor for the rules as they stand now will be time. If they add more expansions and mechanics the rules might be as flexible as they could be. At this point though they are pretty solid and show that some testing was done before the final rules were printed up.

That sounds promising. Still haven't played it yet.
