Game idea format: 40-160 point game

By Jadotch, in X-Wing

I was thinking about how most of the complaints come from "The Meta" which the meta itself is the enemy. The meta is always going to be broke at a set point level. Sooooo ... if there is no set point level ... there is no set meta.

You bring a squad of 160 points or below. Limited to 3 unique pilots 4 unique pilots and 3 pilot skill levels for all ships in a squad. (This can be done with adaptability and veteran instincts, and is basically there to speed up play.)

Rolls 4 four-sided dice. Whatever number is rolled, multiple it by ten. That is the squad points for the game.

Each player has 5 minutes to build his squad from the 160 point list he brought. Then the traditional X-Wing game begins with the points assigned.

Yes, you can have a kick *** 160 point list, but will it still be good at 40 points? You can average it out, but if you get a low or high roll in the beginning. Ten points can destroy a list or put a list over the edge. I just think this solve most of the issues with competition play. A 100 point Ghost Fenn list is drastically reduced at 90, and the meta drastically changes at 110.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Edits:

Changed 3 to 4 unique pilots due to limitations on pilot skills.

I mean...yes, sure, that changes the meta, no question. But at your table, your rules anyway. If you don't want to play against Ghost-Fenn, nobody's forcing you. So I'd rather simply coordinate with my friends for themed lists or lists that don't use specific things. For example, I just had a few games with a friend that specifically needed to include a "bad" ship (lowest 5 places in the meta).

I personally don't mind playing against that particular combo. I am just brainstorming an over all way to make the game more enjoyable for everyone.

Sure, I'm doing the same :)

Do you mean 4x 4-sided dice? Because 4x 6-sided dice can go as high as 240pts.

Or are you saying if you roll over 160 then the cap is 160 and if you roll less than 160 then the cap is whatever you rolled?

4 four-sided. At first I made it easy with 3 six-sided for 30-180, but 180 is a lot of points.

You cut put a code on the attack dice (e.g. Blanks = 1, focus = 2, hit = 3 and crit = 4). This will shift towards lower values with this code, so choose whatever you want, but everyone had attack dice when playing X-Wing so this is easily accessible.

On the general idea, I think this is very interesting. However this will put clearly more effort into list building. Not sure how many pilots will be willing to do this, since it is far more complex than building a list.

In the end, you will also get a meta. It will just be different.

It's a lot easier just to run successive events at different point values. Stops a single 'meta' from developing and allows people to know what they will fly.

Or run escalation. Rules already exist and they're a lot of fun.
