C3POFETT's Legion Painting - Palpatine & Custom Royal Guards 1/15/18

By C3POFETT, in Painting

I am working on my Fleet Troopers now and I have two fully painted except for the heads. I am considering going full EA's Star Wars Battlefront and making them some of the species you can purchase in the game I wanted the most. Quarren, Sullustan, Ishi Tib, Rodian, and for my own reasons Gran.

Mel Miniatures has the best looking alien heads for my conversions as they look like they came straight from the EA SWB game. Mels detail and likenesses are all top notch. If you haven't already visited his shapeways page then please do so. Mel has listened to the community and made miniatures we ask for. If you are a fan of the Clone War era and Rebels, his site is for you. Also check out his collection of X-Wing and Armada customs. @melminiaturesa big thanks.

Skull Forge Studios has a nice collection of Shore Troopers and Tie fighter pilots I want to use as Stormtrooper stand ins. SFS has a collection of miniatures that you didn't even know you wanted. You can also buy miniatures buy the piece, so you can customize your squad as little or as much as you want. Visit his site as well. Also "4 A Duel Tabletop" has a nice collection of heads and limbs for all your customization needs.

Why did you go with Mel's alien heads as opposed to 4-a-duel's alien heads in fleet trooper helmets?

Simply likeness with Battlefront?

In my personal experience with 3D printing, what you see isn't always what you get. Another gamer in my area has ordered quite a bit from Mel and his stuff looks great. Also seeing other members conversions in this community helped.

I wanted a squad without helmets (Star Wars Battlefront look) and I liked the look of certain species he had on his page a little more than some others. I contacted Mel about a custom set of alien heads as I didn't want a bunch of heads I wasn't going to use and in a matter of hours he got back to me with exactly what I asked for.

Honestly there are things from 4 A Duel Tabletop I am going to purchase as well as Skull Forge Studios as I get to them.

Thanks, good to know.

I'm planning what to eventually get for my own rebels. Too bad shapeways doesn't show any printed examples.

Nice work on your miniatures.

Thanks I am working on Han and Commandoes at the moment. I completed my Fleet Troopers. One squad done as seen in Episode 4 and a second squad done as a full alien species squad. Bith, Sullustan, Gran, Rodian, Ishi Tib, Duros and Quarren. I plan to do the same for one squad of Rebel Commandoes and still wanting to make a full squad of Mon Calamari core set Rebels.

I was inspired by your black/grey/blue troopers and went with a similar paint scheme with my final rebel trooper unit. I was getting tired of all of the browns but was concerned another color scheme wouldn't look good. Yours convinced me that I could do something different and still have it look good.

Thank you. Having 3 core sets I honestly knew I was going to have movie accurate squads so I decided to think outside the box immediately. My rebels don't look like they fit on an Endor, Hoth or Tattoine table, but, they don't look out of place either when playing.

I am working on a squad of Snowtroopers in traditional white armor. The only squads that I did not veer from the paint scheme is the Fleet Troopers. I did give one squad a complete set of Alien Heads from Mel Miniatures, put together at my request. (pictures to follow) This way I can mix and match or just run a full alien squad.

I did make an adjustment to Han Solo. I wasn't crazy about his hairline and fixed it to my liking. I am also considering customizing a couple of Rebel Commando miniatures to resemble Luke and Leia on Endor. (pre Ewok Village) Also I want to paint a set of speeder bikes to go with my Shadow Troopers. Dark gray bikes with black and gray Scout Troopers.

My Han Solo with a revised hairline:

Also my homemade attempt at a bunker entrance in the background along with some painted Priority Supplies.

My Custom Fleet Troopers as a full Alien Squad. I can either mix and match or run a full on assorted species squad.

Heads by Mel Miniatures from shapeways. Except for Bith (WotC) and Duros (core set)

Here are two Stormtrooper Commanders I did on a whim. One is based on the Phase 2 Clone Troopers that ran with Mace Windu. The one on the right is based on the Disney Film Tron but as my fiance says "Beware of Hitchhiking Stormtroopers!" or "A Stormtrooper will follow you home!" (Haunted Mansion reference for those who don't know.)

Which one should I make into a squad?

Left if you plan on keeping the rest of your troopers "sensible." Right if you plan on outside-the-box schemes for the rest of your army too ?

First off nice job on all your miniatures. I especially like what you did with the fleet troopers. Your quarren, gran and ishi tib look spot on as far as paint job. Your squad reminds me of the battlefront video game. What you did with han solo makes a big difference to his overall look.

I say do both stormtrooper squads. I am a tron fan as well as the haunted mansion ride. I like the other one too because it reminds me of a shock trooper from battlefront.

Thank you. As stated previously, EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2015 was an inspiration for the Alien Species squad. The unused Fleet Trooper heads wont go to waste as I plan on mixing them into my existing unpainted squads for a little added variety. (2 Rebel Commando squads and 2 additional Core Sets)

my preference is the phase 2 clone trooper. I've always liked clone trooper paint schemes

The change in the hairline really changes how old the FFG sculpt makes him look. I didn't like the receeding hairline either.

your painting is spot on, I'd invest in some washes though just to give the figures a bit more detail if you like. it really helps give the faces some depth. A flesh wash and maybe a black wash is probably all you'd need.

Thank you. I do have a set of washes but I rarely use them. Mostly for the weapons since I don't actually paint them black. I know my faces/flesh tone looks very light but using the Kenner/Hasbro Black Series 6" line as my inspiration, it is pretty close. I tried using washes in the past with my Imperial Assault miniatures but I couldn't find a happy medium when doing faces.

If you or anyone can break it down for me, (washes for dummies :P) then I would be happy to give it another go. I wouldn't be against touching them up.

I wasn't being critical. Your figures actually look like the old kenner figures. So if that's what you're going for, you're apot on. I think you're actually a more precise painter than a lot of the figures I've seen here and other places. I like the washes because they hide my mistakes or laziness due to speed painting. I use the citadel ones because they work best in my hands. But they are also the mosy expensive. A little flesh wash on the hands and face add some contour or depth.q5qETW7.jpg

You can do the same with the coat or hands, etc. I almost always add a wash to everything now. But depends on what style you're looking for. I'm in too much of a hurry usually whuch is why i like the wash/stain effect.

That’s exactly the same paint scheme I did a while back except I painted one of my squads with green eye pieces.?

I didn't think you were being critical at all. I would rather paint a squad of Stormtroopers than do a human face. I have not found a flesh paint that I am happy with the final result. It is my own critique.

I would honestly appreciate other members of the community to share their process and technique. I have always liked the willingness of this community to share tips and I always find other members work very inspirational especially outside of the box paint schemes.

Awesome. As just stated above I really like out of the box paint schemes throughout the community. I enjoy seeing what others have done and enjoy sharing my themes as well.

To make flesh look like flesh you need some red and purple shading, because there's blood under the skin. Look at your own hands for inspiration. A thin THIN amount of red wash over the flesh, and purple on the bottom/shaded sides. Follow that by doing your flesh color again, then repeat until it's good enough, or you get sick of it.
