C3POFETT's Legion Painting - Palpatine & Custom Royal Guards 1/15/18

By C3POFETT, in Painting

Here is my stab at a couple of Imperial squads for Star Wars Legion. I have on the right a Shadow Trooper Commander based loosely on the Shadow Troopers from EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2015. (Commanders only shown)

On the Left is my version of a "Survivor of Scarif" Commander. My thought was that this entire squad of Stormtroopers were once a squad of Shore Troopers on Scarif and were able to escape the fate of the all but forgotten Imperial Base. They chose to adorn pieces of their Shore Trooper armor with pride so that their fallen comrades will never be forgotten. The squad has vowed to put an end to the Rebels responsible for the destruction of the Death Star as they took away their right to exact revenge against Grand Moff Tarkin themselves.

All members of the "Survivors of Scarif" squad have their appropriate colors and bands based upon rank as seen in Rogue One.

I plan to do an "Inferno Squad" of Storm Troopers and if I can get the hang of using "Green Stuff" possibly a squad of zombie "Death Troopers" from the novel of the same name.

I own 3 Core Sets since my tables are to be pretty much all interior battles. My first table is a modular Death Star/Star Destroyer/Imperial Base (WIP) and hopefully a Bespin table will be next. I don't see vehicles roaming the halls so I figured I will need a lot of troopers are needed to make a full squad. I also decided early that I don't want six squads of Original Trilogy only troopers.

Cool back story!

I don't know if it's a trick of the light, but are your Scarif troops painted white, or off-white/bone like the Shore troopers in Scarif?

Thanks. They are wearing primarily the traditional white Stormtrooper white. They are only wearing a few pieces of Shore trooper armor which is just the colorful shoulder and arm pieces which signified rank and squads.

Feedback is greatly appreciated. All miniatures painted using only paint purchased from Michaels Arts & Craft and Hobby Lobby. No LGS in my area sells Citadel or Vallejo. Head swap on the Mon Calamari and the Gran (i know it appears lob-sided) are from WotC miniatures.

I plan on creating a full rebel squad of Mon Calamari. A second squad will consist of a mixed species squad. (gonna go with Mel Miniatures 3D printed heads) I want to try my hand at converting a squad of stormtroopers into a full squad of Death Troopers from the novel of the same name. (zombies, not the Rogue One troopers)

Looks good so far. Nothing wrong with using craft paint if that's what you have. You might want to consider doing a wash over the base colors, especially in the faces. I use Army Painter wash, but you can find many homemade "wash" recipes by using Google.

Here a link to my miniatures painted with craft paint and cheap artist acrylics. Base colors, wash, highlights.

Thanks I will look into doing a wash on the faces. When painting my miniatures I was going for that Kenner/Hasbro look so the only thing I did washes/thinned paint on was the flamethrower as I really wanted a used look on that one.

If you want more of the Kenner action figure look you might just want to put a small black dot in the eyes using a very small brush or the end of a toothpick.

...nice werk and effort...

Your speeder bike riders look super clean (as in very nice and precisely painted)! I look forward to seeing the all-Mon Cal squad.

Really like that blue/grey scheme on your rebels. Reminds me of like Navy formal pea coats.

Agree with the above, using basic acrylic paint doesn't seem to be a hindrance at all! Looks great.

Thanks, the speeder bikes were my absolute favorite thing to paint so far. The picture doesn't show it but I did weather them and was extremely happy with the results. A super dry brush of black in some spots and minor silver highlights on edges to show wear.

As far as the Mon Calamari squad I am a little hesitant as it will be my first time trying to use Green Stuff.

Spot on with the color scheme. Also a little Blue/Grey going on for a Galactic "Civil War" theme as well.

I think I've enjoyed painting the AT-RT the most so far, and aesthetically I like its look most. Excited to get to paint another in my 2nd core box.

Ahhhh I see what you mean re: the Civil War :D

Awesome, I like taking pride with a job well done especially when it exceeds your own expectations. I've got 3 core sets here. I am considering black with gunmetal accents on the next pair of speeder bikes and a white armor with deep gray color scheme on the scouts.

Very cool. I look forward to seeing them. I really enjoyed painting these guys up. I am at an impass on how to paint squad #2. I don't know if I want a traditional squad or if I want a shadow squad.

I did all the cream parts in very dark gray and the rest in white. Obvs the eyes and gloves etc were black. I then gave them a heavy 2:1:2 nuln : drakenhoff : lahmian and leadblecher for guns

Very nice.

I was figuring black armor with very dark gray for the fabric and red visor eyes if it looks good. All my guns are done in gunmetal (leadbelcher) and given a nuln oil wash. That is so you can tell where the troopers hands end and the gun begins.

It's always fun to see "non-canon" paint schemes. I especially like the rebel squad with the dark blue jackets!

I also appreciate the head swaps--I have been meaning to get some heads from Mel for that purpose, but I haven't done it yet. Seeing more of the conversions on here helps motivate me, so thank you!

Thank you. I have done the same with my Imperial Assault miniatures. I did one box or expansion painted as seen on their cards or "movie" accurate and a second box or expansion done as a custom set. (see the IA painting forums).

The head swaps were done as a test to see how easy it would be. I honestly didn't feel too confident possibly ruining my miniatures but I am pleased with how the Mon Calamari came out. I want to have a full Mon Cal squad and honestly it is the results from some of the other members posting on here that inspired me as well.

I say do it. FFG has made the rebel heads a "push to fit" piece on its last couple of releases and an easy way to start.
