Large Ship Damage Deck a good idea?

By Viktus106, in X-Wing

Afternoon ladies. gentlemen, loyal citizens and scummy xenos of the outer rim,

Been musing about it and the idea of having a large ship specific damage deck seems quite entertaining to me. I say large ship and not large base ships because I think if you made it so that ships over a certain amount of effective health had to use it, you can then point and aim it at things that clearly should have been on a large base to begin with . . or at least a medium base.

So the damage deck would replace six of the Direct Hit! in favor of two each of the below, retaining one Direct Hit!

Rotor Malfunction:
You may only perform attacks out of your primary firing arc.

ACTION: Roll a dice, on a (hit) or (Crit), flip this card face down.

Life Support Failure:
Discard one of your crew upgrade cards, then flip this card face down.

Damaged Shield Generator:
As long as this card is face up, your printed shield value is considered as 0.

What are people's thoughts?

I don't propose this as a "fix" to anything, i'm just thinking of ways to spice the game up beyond the norm.

Fixed that wording. However, this requires someone to own 2 damage decks. Also, Damaged Shield Generator means nothing. Reinforced Deflectors and R2-D2 are the only large ship regen shenanigans, and once you're taking crits, you have no shields anyway. Also, it's probably a ship crit, so you can't Kylo it. Only way it would be useful is if Wampa puts a facedown through shields and then that one TIE Advanced pilot flips it up. Pretty useless overall IMO. The other two are actually pretty good!

Or imagine if they put munitions failure back into the "new" deck. TLT now has a chance of being ejected without Boba Fett.

You wouldn't necessarily have to have two decks. If you're replacing Direct Hits with these 6 cards, you could just have it say "Rotor Malfunction, Large Ship Only: *words* Direct Hit, Small Ship Only." The problem is that FFG won't require people to use it (see TFA "balanced" damage deck), so no one will.

I think things like a new damage deck and another set of obstacles with different shapes and effects would only bring more variety to the game.

It would be great if FFG made huge ships as obstacles an official tournament rule.

This would be a lot of work to retroactively add, but it would be cool if the damage deck had a number of (as in, more than the default 2) "Special Damage" cards and each ship had one or more damage conditions that are specific to that ship. If you draw a Special damage card, you take the ship-specific condition for that ship (or roll to see which ship-specific condition you get if there are more than 1).

Examples: Lancer-Class could have a 'you cannot rotate your arc', yt-1300 (or any other pwt/turreted ship) could have a 'you cannot perform attacks outside your primary arc', x-wing/u-wing could have 'you cannot change your s-foils/pivot wing', vcx-100 could have 'you must immediately deploy any docked ship'.

Whether or not the condition is reversible (whether it's timed, Actioned, or roll for it) could be up to the condition. This could open up some new design space.

Just a thought...

Redo new munitions failure --

"When attacking, roll 2 fewer attack dice (to a minimum of 2, unless another game effect specifies a lower minimum). ACTION: Discard an equipped secondary weapon to flip this card over."

So take out some of the face-up cards that pretty much EVERY ship that has any hull fears and replace them with crits that many ships wouldn't give two hoots about.

Rotor Malfunction: You must REALLY hate out of arc attacks to think you need this one. Now I'll give you that many of the most used large ships have some kind of turret not all do so you're not hurting those one bit while you are trying to get in your Turret nerf.

Life Support Failure: Again a card that can completely miss. Sure many large ships have crew on them for support but some of them don't. Now you've got another card that some people would MUCH rather see than a Direct Hit.

Damaged Shield Generator: On an epic ship this could be murder but on most large ships it's almost completely worthless. Shield Regen isn't much of a problem although I guess you're trying to pick on a certain K-Wing here. This means the only way this card will be useful is if you could somehow get lucky and slip it UNDER a ship's shield by dealing it a (face-up) card instead of damage. How many ways of doing this are there? Two? Three?

I don't see this as spicing the game up as much as it's simply trying to nerf some things you may consider problematic while encouraging other things. It may not be a thing right now but is IG-88 going to care about any of these?

PS. Now if FFG put out new large ships that have their own "damage deck" just like the Epic ships already do some of these things could make sense in that limited application.

I don't actually consider those things problematic, just figured it wouod make things a little bit more thematic in casual play. Turrets do get stuck and crew do get injured.
