The Desert Cometh

Oh the barf mats? Yeah, I'll pass. So many nicer mats online.

Desert maps are out. I'm not sure how much I like them given the fact terrain you have on top might conflict with what's on the map.

I totally agree. I went with one of the grassy plains runewars mats for now. may get a second or wait and see if they put one out that better represents a base environment without all the paths and stuff.

They're not too bad, thanks to all the printed on stuff you need less terrain, but I won't get them. My Imperials are on lava Bases and my Rebels probably will get forest/jungle bases.

Nope. The printed terrain is autofail for me. I can see where some folks may like them because they don't want to have to buy terrain, but that 2d 'terrain' element kills them.

Has anyone actually seen these in person? On the computer screen they look like fail, in person, may be a different story.

These look terrible. I'll do your artwork for cheap, FFG. Maybe even "store credit."

I saw them in boxes at the LGS when they received the order on Tuesday. Didn't look in one though. :D

Nope... Easy pass on these.

I wouldn't want to play on these in general.

I really don’t see this mat as a useful product. Most people I know look at mats as an investment for multiple games. The 2D specific terrain kills it. I will stick to my 6x4 mats I already own.

Really, the first absolute fail so far in an amazing game. Core box comes with 3d terrain, and additional terrain has been announced as well. The FFG tables at Adepticon had great 3d terrain. The rules even specify how to set up a game using 3d terrain.

WHY release maps with confusing 2d terrain elements?? Utter fail.

IMO I think they are not aiming at the veteran wargamer with these, knowing many of us already own matts/terrain.

I reckon these might be aimed at newcomers with little to no terrain and this might be good thing for them.

I just hope this game doesn't devolve into the Warmachine/Hordes style of using 2D terrain for tournaments.

Seems like teaching bad habits to newbies.

The concrete circle thing would be weird when models are on the lower and higher bits but still flat on the table. Doesn't do it for me.

I've got an older GW cloth backed grass mat that I've been using for games with my brother. Those used to be $40 before GW discontinued them in favor of the RoB stuff and were 6'x4' and are still some of the best mats out there

I'll stick with my Fat Mat

These mats are pretty enough in person and they do come across rather flat in person. However they are very busy and don't look great with terrain on them. If all you have are barricades, these mats would be fine. If you have nice terrain, no. The actual terrain doesn't blend well with the mats. These mats would look good with a game like x-wing if you wanted to do so some ground battles.

Bingo. I don’t have a play mat and have zero interest in making one. This’ll save me having to measure out the play area.

I think the point is that you can buy much better mats, in 3x3, from other companies like fat mats or deepcut studios.

The one with the AT-AT footprints looks good but the one with the ring/circle... thing... is kind of weird. Not sure what kind of ruins they're supposed to be. I like the desert effect/colors but Im not a fan of the rocks/ridges imitating terrain- would have been better if they were just on the edges. It looks way too cluttered to put 3D terrain on.

I'll pass on these- $80 for both is steep when there's plenty of better printed 4 x 6 mats out there in the same material for a bit less. And I'd rather lug around a single bigger mat than two smaller ones. I get for Armada/ X wing the need to have two 3x3 mats, use one for x wing and then put two together for Armada... but if the norm for Legion is 800 points on a 3x6, why not just make a single mat?

Because FFG makes them in house and it doesn’t seem like they have the capability to go beyond 3x3... perhaps an equipment limitation?

And if they'd just start producing a line of 3x3 mats in various biomes for use with their growing library of wargames in general, that'd be super. They made a great grassy field mat for Runewars, why not expand that line into desert, swamp, etc for use with both games?

Instead, this seems like an attempt to milk the Star Wars IP more than it already has been at the expense of a potentially excellent product line.

I don’t see anything from those sources that look particularly compelling. What did you have in mind?
