My new list I have 3 Stormtrooper units. the 2 that came with the core, and the extra one I bought. They all have grappling hooks. But I only have one grappling hook card that came with the stormtooper expansion. I don't want another unit of stormtroopers. But the only other packs I can get grappling hook upgrades are rebel packs.

Why did'nt FFG pack in a few copies of upgrades that only come in packs? I don't want to buy Rebel's just for the cards.

I thought FFG was'nt going to do this for this game like they did with X-wing. I'm assuming for official tourneys and events you can't proxy cards.

It's already been announced all cards will be available to both factions so you don't have to chase cards. Snowtroopers and Fleet Troopers come with Grappling Hooks and Impact Grenades, while Consussion Grenades and Scopes came in the core.

Do not buy cross faction unless you plan on playing both. Go return any unopened stuff if you have bought cross faction. Have patience and borrow upgrades for tournaments.

There is nothing in rebel expansion packs that you can use for imperials that you can't already get just buying imperial expansion packs.

But if you want more grappling hook cards, THEN buy more imperial packs that come with them. Right now that is only stormtrooper expansion packs. In a few weeks you can pick up snowtrooper expansion packs as well.

The trolling is real

Same as what they did with Runewars. Unit specific upgrades will be with that upgrade box. Any generic upgrades available to everyone will be available to each side in SOME pack the side can buy. Can't guarantee you'll get what you want in each pack, but if you see something in the Rebels you want for the Imps it will show up in an Imp box eventually. What sucks is what's stated above. You want 3X grappling hooks for your expansion and the core guys? Nope, FFG don't play that way. But in friendly games who cares. Just will be a hassle for those who need them in OP. But that's nothing new for their game lines.

I don't get why you think you need to be Rebel packs?

Why not buy more Stormtrooper packs instead? Or just wait for Snowtroopers.

Exactly. If you want all your stormtroopers to have grappling hooks (and you're not playing OP/tourney) then it's simple. Pay the point cost of grappling hooks to be on each unit, (3 pts per 3 units = 9 points total) and then just put the one grappling hooks upgrade card next to your other cards for reference. If they all had them, I'd probably do that anyway so my table wasn't cluttered with the things.

I doubt whoever you play with would have a problem with it considering the game just came out, those cards didnt come in core, and you can only get it in one expansion per faction as of right now. No biggy. Snow troopers will have them, whatever special forces we get will probably have them, etc.

It's part of FFG's standard practice that they bundle cards you want, with units you don't. This boosts sales.

The simple solution is to use a list-building app or plain old pen-and-paper, and proxy your cards. Doesn't fly at tournaments, but tournaments aren't my thing so that's not a problem for me. I've been into X Wing since wave 1, and never played in a single tournament. In fact, I think you can count the number of 'standard' X Wing games I've played on one hand.

As others have said, they are not forcing you to buy rebels. The cards you want are available in two imperial expansions (including the snow troopers that are available in a couple of weeks).

They might be available in future expansions too.

@Chucknuckle that has been their practice previously, but not for Legion (and I think they are changing this in other games too).

@Ken on Cape The Grappling Hooks come with the Snowtroopers, which are launching in early May.

@Chucknuckle They've already said that they're changing that tactic. The newest Armada wave is an example, with the cross faction cards appearing in both expansions.

It makes them money, I doubt the change will be permanent. It's really an artefact of the way they build their games, with the cards (which are essentially just rules text) becoming actual playing pieces in their own right.

They did this as far back as Runewars, and are continuing it for Legion.

Just photocopy your original card, print it out and sleeve it - voila multiple copies.

But your OP post is incorrect about having to buy Rebels. All upgrades will be available in your faction boxes somewhere, you are just being forced to buy units you don't want, rather than faction units you don't want.

I also plan on proxying flame trooper models into my existing core box, as i don't want to buy a snowtrooper box, just for access to that model type and card, which i think is fair for friendly games, but i agree with tournaments enforcing no proxy models, but they should allow for proxy cards.

FFG cannot keep on with their current practice, like you said why do I have to spend £60 on 3 stormtrooper sets to get 3 cards - for me, proxy cards are the only viable way forwards.

I agree that however you can only proxy cards once the units have hit retail and are available to purchase.

Either that or FFG should really look at doing card packs as an accessory.

Just pinging this to say that Snowtroopers apparently release on May 3rd.

The Flametrooper can only be equiped to Snowtroopers, thus just proxying that card won't work. You'd have to proxy Snowtroopers entirely.

Runewars follows the new model. Legion follows the new model.

Not only is there NO indication AT ALL of them returning to the original X-Wing model but several games worth of evidence to the contrary.

I don't follow Runewars, but Legion is only in wave one. If they're still doing the 'every card is available for the same faction at the same time' thing in say, five years, then I'll buy it. But I'd be willing to bet they've slipped back to their old ways by then.

Near everyone will be playing both sides at one point. It is inevitable.

Thankfully you have two solutions to counter your mistrust:
(1) Just buy both factions. Your used to it anyway.
(2) Don't play at all.

I never will buy anything for Legion but rebels. If I play Imps it will be because I'm using someone else's stuff who wants to face an Imperial opponent (and probably a BAD imperial opponent).
