Why do pilots need EPTs?

By Lightningclaw, in X-Wing

I'm just wondering- the idea I've been observing here on these forums is that an EPT slot should be a given unless you are the lowest PS generic.

Why is that? Is it the action efficiency the slot allows, the PS boost... it seems a little puzzling. This is hyperbole, but why EPT or DOA?

  1. so they can use VI
  2. because VI
  3. because adaptability
  4. expose!!!!

As an Epic player, it allows me to give the unit a role identity. And that is achieved by (as you said) giving the ship some action efficiency, whether that might be PS race (VI), Alpha Strike utility (Deadeye), consistent attacking power (Expertise), or the ability to operate away from my main forces (Lone Wolf).

The best way to add flavor to a given ship is a Mod, Title, or EPT. Mods are a given, and a Title is either available or not for that chassis. So the EPT makes or breaks the pilot.

This isn't accurate.

The assertion is commonly that the higher PS of two generics where there are uniques with EPTs, should also have an EPT. Because mostly, higher-PS generics are COMPLETELY useless.

Also, that some pilots who don't currently have EPTs, really need them to be competitive, especially the likes of the mid-PS TIE Interceptor pilots, because Squints have this tendency to die horribly when sneezed at without PTL.

I've had the exact same question. I don't think every ship needs an Elite talent. Sure, there are some mid-tiered pilots that could have fun, like Lt. Lorrir with Wired, but I generally don't like how giving everybody access to Elites makes everybody kind of cookie cutter, y'know? It's clear what the best Elite upgrades are, so those will just go on lower-skilled pilots to save a point or two because the high PS pilot might have only a marginally useful ability. I don't think I'd like that.

Especially considering what @Wiredin pointed out: Veteran Instincts. Ugh!

EDIT: And as @thespaceinvader just said, everybody is married to Push the Limit on TIE interceptors, which is lame in my opinion.

EPT? oh you mean the VI slot.

In general terms simply for flavor.

These guys make up the backbone of my Epics lists. But I find them much less exciting to use without an EPT. I reach for the T-70 over the T-65 specifically because of Blue Vet vs. Red Squadron.

I would change that to "I don't think every Ace needs an EPT." I would like to see every chassis have a mid level grunt with an EPT (Y-Wing, T-65, Punisher, et. al.).

EPTs give non crew ships action efficiency that is needed in this day and age of Xwing: Predator,Expertise,PTL,LW, or a way to survive all the action efficiency with higher PS than the opponent with VI and adaptability.

Without EPT and no cool ability like Jess Pava then the ship is a single action and that is weak-sauce right now unless you can spam a bunch of them to make up for it.

Generics have no abiltiies. So, that leaves them with either EPT or spamming.

If you have a choice between a PS2 or a PS4, and neither have an EPT (Gold vs Grey Ywing) then why pay more for PS4?

Nu vs Rhos: Both get used because ps4 has an ept, actually making it useful. If Rhos did not have an EPT, they would NEVER see play unless deadeye torp boats were still meta and you needed to ps kill them.

Epts are a prime and relatively universal source of dice mods, which are normally found through systems and/or crew

Predator, Expertise, and Lone Wolf to a lesser extent

And if you already get mods via other upgrade slots, you can further augment your ship with VI or Crackshot

DEADEYE meanwhile is SUPER clutch for Ordnance carriers, especially at a lower ps

It's just a great upgrade slot, all told
