Speed and Maneuverability, the Imperial faction identity... A TIE series fix.

By Commander Kaine, in X-Wing

So. X-Wing fix is public, and it looks to be great, at least mechanically. It most likely will accomplish what it set out to do. X-Wings with their great pilot abilities, and now defender like dial (they basically have white Trolls), and with the ability to equip astromechs like BB8 or R2-D2, even if they won't be the top of the meta, they will definitely be in a great spot. (I understand the grumbling of the folks who say Luke shouldn't become a partisan to become viable, and I agree, but c'mon. Be a bit more grateful. It's not like Soontir was a Royal guard ever)

I have but one issue with this, and I know I am not alone. Some have expressed the idea that X-Wings are now more mobile than certain TIEs. Certain very mobile TIEs.

Which is a good idea, really. Wave 1 dials can't compete with today's Turrets with green turns level of dial creep. I'm not saying the X-Wing should be less mobile. I'm saying it is time to hammer down on the idea that Speed and Maneuverability ARE the imperial faction mechanics... by similarly drastic methods.

(Oh and to the folks who say whining about fixes will result in nothing... I think the X-Wing fix is greatly influenced by our whining here so... there's that.)

So, today's ships greatly outshine their predecessors in maneuverability, provided by both dials, and upgrades. This is particularly hurting older imperial ships, since their dials were something they paid extra for. It was their thing.

When it comes to fixing TIE-s, there is the problem of available slots. Most of them lack things like the X-Wings torpedo slot, and previously, I was reluctant on making inelegant designs... However, the Renegade Refit is kinda inelegant as well. It makes no sense fluff wise (why are EPT-s cheaper?), and it feels really strange that it goes on two very different crafts. For better or for worse, we have reached the point where inelegant designs are necessary to work around the peculiarities of ships with more conservative design.

So, without further ado, here are my inelegant ideas to fix the TIE-s...

Listen... TIE-s need this. Imperials need this. It's the only thing we have sorta going for us, let's make it better. There is an upgrade discrepancy, and it is not going to get better. A simple X-wing will now require 4-5 upgrades... Let the past die. The age of single or no upgrades is gone. X-Wing is not very simplistic game anymore. It's time to face it.

Let's address the dial creep part first. The most arc-locked faction SHOULD be the most mobile. You know, to be comparable. Even at its worst, this upgrade let's you move freely, but then you still have to figure your opponent out. An all white dial is fairer than a turret. Just keep that in mind. It also makes the Interceptor move better than the X-Wing, which is frankly, how things should be.

(I couldn't find nice artwork for both sides.. it's in progress)

So TIE-s get a cheaper, slightly conditional EU. I think that is fine. They still can't use AT with it (similarly how S-foils don't let you have one), but it allows the ships that are known for their speed to be actually fast.

And finally, let's make them really fast. This goes on ships with native boost, or you can combo it with MK IV. so that any TIE can catch up to things. I doubt it is broken, but it provides ships with a superior mobility, and range control. They can force engagements in round 1, while being in the safety of range 3, or they can zip away from danger in the last moment. That's great.

Of course, all the previous TIE only mods become better as well. LWF, TIE MK II provide additional combos.

So what breaks? I don't think anything does... Kylo with white turns is better, but he still can't regen. He will be better at range control, and speed. Vader will be cheaper, but still no AT for him. Soontir is still squishy (Even with Krennic).

I think all of these are fine. Thoughts?

I do think you are on the right track, Mk3 & 4 look great, there are some points though.

The Tie Series could add an ept slot to any pilot of PS4 or higher. Yes double ept's to some but they still have to pay the points for them.

Mk5 engine should have hard turns as well at speed 2. That really opens up the maneuvering.

Twin ion engines of various types should not be able to be mixed but only 1 type may be fitted to a ship.

A TIE swarm title "Team support" would also be good, maybe something that allows ships with this title to share tokens when attacking or defending if within R2.

A "concentrated fire" title, a ship at R1 with this title and has the same target in arc at R1-3 may receive a weapons disabled token providing it has not already fired so that you may add 1 hit result to your attack. Means cheap ties can support interceptors etc like wing men giving a valuable attack boost.

Sure! I'll take my TIE Series Title along with Sabine's Masterpiece, Captured TIE, and Twin Ion Engine MK IV.

Yakostovian beat me to it... you DEFINITELY need to include Imperial Only to the TIE Series card at the bare minimum XD

I too was thinking of ways to boost TIE performance, maybe bringing back swarms with a "for every ship with TIE in their name, reduce the squad point cost by 2 for each TIE unit" which, after sleeping on it and doing the math, would be STUPID broken after placing 4 TIEs, each costing 8 points less, which could then lead to potentially having a total of NEGATIVE points where you now have a table full of TIEs and a friggin Raider plopped down because you literally CAN.

Your solution is a WHOLE lot cleaner.

I would love to run TIE Series, TIE Mk. IV, and Autothrusters on a TIE Defender. (of course, this would be as problematic as running Autothrusters on a T-65, even with the S-foils card).

Forgive me, but how do they basically have white Trolls? It literally says "treat it as a red Troll." Also, I'm not entirely sure if saying they have a defender like dial is a good thing or not. Prior to the defender fix, everyone complained how "awful" their dial was because even though it have every single non-turn around maneuver except 1 straight on it, as well as a white K turn, the complaint was that their only greens were straight, and their turns (except 3) were red.

If we're being honest, Servos are rarely going to be used closed (go go 2 attack being useless), and while I won't discount the ability to gain 2 green maneuvers, I don't think it's going to be utilized often. But the open servos add barrel roll and Troll... Giving them a T70 dial (except the 3 straight green), with BR instead of Bst... and with the refit, they are now 5 points cheaper than the T70.
