Terrinoth -- other resources?

By finarvyn, in Genesys

So according to the Terrinoth hardback, the world is an RPG version of a couple of games. (Descent, Runewars, Runebound.) I've not played any of these games, and I don't think I've even seen inside the boxes so I have no idea what they are or what their contents might be.

My question is -- are there any things in those games which would be useful for a Terrinoth-based campaign? Do those games come with maps, special miniatures, or any other components which are unique to Terrinoth?

Never played any either, but most of those games are miniatures games of some sort. Descent is a dungeon explorer board game, so I know it has grid maps, though I'm not sure exactly the quality (I know Star Wars: Imperial Assault uses interchangeable puzzle-like interlocking pieces, but I'm somehow under the impression Descent's maps are different).

I once looked into it. If you can get them cheap or are willing to invest, Descent has a massive number of individual miniatures (monsters and heroes) that would be perfect for an RPG, if you like to use them.

Runewars is a tactical miniatures battle game using the same basic rules as Star Wars Legion, so there’s a heap of minis for that too, and being a fairly recent game it’s getting constant new product releases.

But I have no idea how much world Lore is in any of the other products, I would think RoT has consolidated a lot of it, but there’s certainly bound to be more.

The descent maps are like the imperial assault maps.

They include minis

The Runebound map is a detailed map of southern Terrinoth, and IMO perfect for a sandbox/hex-crawl campaign. The various quest cards in the Runebound set can also serve as adventure seeds. The figures can of course be used as PCs and NPCs.

I also plan to get one of the Runewars expansion sets for figures for the bad guys.

I am definitely looking for a digital copy of the different Runebound maps. I have the 2nd(?) edition board game but would prefer not having to duplicate them myself :)

Yes on all four counts, and there are plenty of resources out there too- check out some of the other Terrinoth threads on here- there are some good wiki sites including lots of character info, maps and other useful info, with these kinds of tools and the sourcebook there's plenty of good resources out there for a Terrinoth based or fantasy game. And look at the Descent quest vault too, some of those player campaigns may make for fun RPG sessions.

One of the booklets of Legacy of Dragonholt has some relevant general lore info, but as far as I can tell the only titbits not covered in Realms of Terrinoth are how the races decide on names for their children (but without any example names) and a short mention of two more catfolk races native to territories outside Terrinoth.

By the way, both Realms of Terrinoth overall and The Haunted City (Genesys GenCon Adventure) are set before the events of any of the recent games set in the world (don't know about Runebound 1/2e and Descent 1e; obviously Battlemist and Diskwars are ancient backstory). Doesn't really make a whole lot of difference, but if your players have played the Descent 2e core game (or seen the Lieutenant miniatures in a shop) they'll know a certain person is a big bad as soon as they meet them in THC (the hints within the adventure kind of going to waste) and another is still described in RoT as the hero they were perceived as before the events of The Shadow Rune (the original campaign for Descent 2e which they've moronically dropped in recent printings in favor of the previously sold separately Heirs of Blood ).

Actually I think The Haunted City takes place after Shadows of Nerekhall.

How so? None of the - rather significant - events in Shadow of Nerekhall are even alluded to, let alone explicitly mentioned, in The Haunted City . Furthermore, it definitely takes place before The Shadow Rune (and Heirs of Blood ) as a certain someone* clearly hasn't been publicly found out yet, and I find it hard to believe that any Descent 2e expansion would be set before the core game.

*It feels weird to suddenly feel the need to avoid spoiling a game that's six years old - and the character's first appearance as a villain AFAIK even was ten years ago.
