Trying to figure out points for custom units (formerly with murder-bears)

By That Blasted Samophlange, in Star Wars: Legion

So we have had Legion in our hands for a while, and while I love what we have, I still long for the First Order - I like how they look. This isn’t really about them. It isn’t really about Ewoks (murder-bears). What it IS about is breaking down the cost of units so people can make their own. I spent an afternoon working in this, and some of the heavy trooper options don’t quite add up, but so far all the corps base units seem to work with this.

So as the title says, let us Build some Murder-Bears. Here is a break down of several units and how I assigned cost.

Storm trooper is 11 points

Heavy, Grenade, Gear (3 points)

Red defence (2 point)

White attack, Range 1-3 (3 point)

Unarmed black (0 point)

Surge: hit (1 point)

1 health, 1 courage, personnel slot

Precise 1 (1 point)

Speed 2 (1 point)

Rebel trooper 10 points

Heavy, grenade gear ( 3 points)

White defence (0 point)

Black attack, range 1-3 (4 points)

Surge defence (1 point)

1 health

1 courage

Personnel slot

Unarmed Black

Nimble (1 point)

Speed 2 (1 point)

Fleet trooper 11 points

Black melee

1 health

1 courage

Personnel slot

Heavy, grenade, gear (3 points)

Ready 1 (1 point)

Speed 2 (1 point)

Range 1-2, 2 white (4 points)

Surge: defend, hit (2 points)

Basic Stats; Corps Unit (0 points)

Health 1

Courage 1

Attack: Black, Melee

Speed 1

Defence: white

Personnel slot

Increase speed by 1; cost 1 (max 3)

Unit Keyword ability; cost 1 (some will cost more or less; Steady seems to be worth 3).

Increase courage by 1; cost 1

Increasing defence die from white to Red; cost 2

Add a Range 1, White attack; cost 1

Increasing range by 1; cost 1 (max range is 4)

Adding an additional white die to an attack 2 points

Attack dice upgrades:

Upgrade white to black; cost 1

Upgrade black to Red; cost 2

Add a gear, heavy, comm, grenade slot; cost 1 per slot

Once you have the base cost of a single unit, also the cost of a trooper upgrade, multiply this value by 4 (in most cases the basic squad size is 4 units)

Also, when building a unit, you have to spend some points. Though if someone wants to test the basic stats as a unit, by all means, please do and met me know. My assumption is that nearly every unit will have spent upwards of 10 points on them.

Now that we have that out of the way lets look at what we know about ewoks.

They look like bears, of the teddy genus, and they murder people.

While quite skilled mechanically they don’t seem to have much in the way of metal, and wear leather and bone as armour, so I think we should avoid upgrading that defence die to red.

Now in Legends fiction Ewoks while diminutive were apparently as strong as wookies. Lets assume they are quite strong themselves, so we can keep the black die for melee. If they are that strong, I think we could upgrade their speed to two.

Ewoks also live in trees, so I think giving them the keyword Expert Climbers is a good idea. They also move quite well in the forest, so lets give them unhindered as well. They are also quite stealthy, which the game doesn’t take into effect, but they will have smaller models, and I think they should have the low profile keyword.

All in all, seems pretty good. But we see Ewoks using bows, and bolas so lets give them some versatility. We see wicket using a bola, as well as others so lets add that. Now bolas aren’t really long range, but they are good at tripping people, so lets keep it range 1, but add the suppressive keyword. While I am keeping the price of Suppressive at 1 point, it will likely be worth more.

One final thing, lets add in a heavy slot. That way we can add some options.

Ewok Warriors (Murder-Bears)

28 points

Unit Size 4

Health 1

Courage 1

Attack: Black, Melee

Attack: Bola, white die Range 1; Suppressive

Speed 2

Defence: white

Personnel slot

Heavy Slot

Expert Climber

Unhindered

Low Profile

Ewok Warrior

7 points

Ewoks only

Add another Ewok Mini

Ewok Hunter

10 points

(Heavy slot)

Range 1-2, black

Add an ewok hunter mini

Ewok Looter with E-11

10 points

(Heavy slot)

Range 1-3, white

Add an Ewok Looter with E-11 mini

I think we should end it there. What we have are pretty decent. They are cheap, but that is reflected by their limited range due to technology shown.

Do you play imperials?

I do prefer them, yes. Why?

Never mind, I just realized that the 28 points refers to the entire unit, and not to the individual soldier, which would be grossly overpriced. Just thought you were dissing on Ewoks.

Nope, trying to make things balanced as possible, at least by the numbers.

You obviously think, that FFG bothers to establish a mathematical formula to get at their points cost, a formula, which can be reverse engineered. Chance would be a fine thing :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Could you chance the size of your text? It's overly big and makes me not want to read it.

While they may very well do what “feels right”, a mathematical formula might help is amateurs not have things so imbalanced.

I have tried. Short of retyping everything, I can't seem to adjust the size. I originally wrote this on my phone anc it was cut and paste to here.

A mathematical formula might not just help amateurs, it is the way to do it. If you don't do it, you end up with a stream of tweaks and nerfs and errata and still no balance. Just look at X-Wing.
