The exact meaning of "Trophy"

By hommetruite, in Talisman Rules Questions

Greetings all,

I looked for the answer to this on the forum, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Can any monster killed be claimed as a trophy, or is this limited to monsters from Enemy cards? For example, can the Sentinel or the Pit Fiends be claimed as trophies?

Thanks...

Onley enemies/monsters on cards can be claimed as trophys. If the card dosen`t says otherwise ofcurse, like for an example: insted of a trophy, you gain 1 craft.

The LoD, sentinel or the monsters/enemies you fight in places on the board (like the forest, crags, tavern) can`t be kept as trophys.

Also monsters found on die roll cards, such as the Dragon in the Cave card or rolling for how the Centaur reacts, can't be kept as Trophies.

"When a character kills an Enemy, he may take it as a trophy." (p. 14)

Enemy is an Adventure card with that keyword (p. 10).

This might sound ironic, but believe me, I'm not.

I just love how you know all exact quotes for all the rules. And all the pages too. Or at least that you have the energy to look it up that thoroughly instead of just typing in what you know is right. You help a lot that way. Kudos to you.

The Enemy quote has been needed so many times it's perma-burned to my brain gran_risa.gif . But even generally, I take my time reading (and re-reading) the rules, so I'll know immediately on what page to find what I need.

I finally found this thread for trophies. At 60+ pages I didn't want to add another thread!

The 3rd edition used experience points. So when we defeated enemies in the Crags, Forest, or Cave, we got experience cones that we traded in at 7. (Then we made up special follower cards for them in case anyone could took one of these as a follower.)

So my question is, since these enemies don't have trophies, when you beat one can you add their value to existing trophies to level up strength or craft? Same with those +2 spaces, now they probably don't give you +2 towards a level up?

I don't really see the point of fighting enemies when you can't get experience for winning. You may as well just call the former "traps" that you have to deal with or lose a life.

Both situations do not count towards your experience gaining, as only trophies can be turned in for Str/Cft points. Basically, all board space or card encounter creatures, that are not specifically "Enemies", don't give you anything if you defeat them.

Board spaces like the Runes give a +2 to the Enemy combat roll, but the card Str/Cft remains the same. When killed, the trophy is still worth what's written on the card.

Of course you can make an house rule for experience points, using cones or such to track experience instead of trophies. With such system you can track even the creatures with no Enemy trait on them, or "boosts" like the Runes Spaces.

Talisman isn't a strategic game where everything has a purpose. Is a light-hearted game with random encounters; you might plan ahead, but not too much since it won't go that way most of the time. There's plenty of room for pointless fights, sudden twists and turns, backstabbing, deliberately annoying other players and so on. Talisman is a game of old, at heart, even with this new look and the interesting add-ons by FFG.
