The most controversial list in the game.

By Yearfire, in X-Wing Squad Lists

X-wing has a handful of unsolved, weird and controversial rulings and card interactions. How many of them can you fit into the same list?

I'm thinking that the best place to start is with Thweek and a Quadjumper with spacetug tractor array.

Any thoughts?

What about them?

A couple of my favorites are (They may not be worth the price, but they are fun):

Scum:
Palob Godalhi (HWK-290)
Attanni Mindlink
Cikatro Vizago
Cloaking Device
Pulse Ray Shield

Here the trick is to cloak Palob, then use Cikatro and remove the cloaking device in exchange for something else. (Maybe a black market slicer?) This way you get the permanent cloak and turns you into a good support ship.

Rebels:
Cassian Andor (U-Wing)
Veterans Instinct
Auto Correctors
Flechette Torpedos
Operation Specialist
Gunner (or Luke)
Pivot Wing
Munition Fail Safe

Here, you fire your Flechettes (or primary), cancel out the attack with the Auto Corrector (DO NOT add the two automatic hits at the end, it is optional), give the free focus token, fire again with Gunner. Your Flechette Torpedo does not go anywhere because of munition fail safe, hopefully you added stress to the target, you give out a free focus, and you get to fire a second time.

So I've tried flying Palob before and he can be kinda cool but never did this trick.. so Cloak on turn 1, then swap it out with Vizago for Contraband Cybernetics.. letting Palob throw 4 green for the rest of the match without ever losing it? But then can't attack, correct?

Correct. But be careful of what illicits you use. Some have been errata’ed and can’t be used when cloaked.

How many controversial rulings do you see in play? Viktor Hel with stealth device vs TLTs or Clusters, TIE strikers with deadeye, maybe something with targeting sync or reinforced deflectors? I can't really say there's too many things that aren't resolved, at least to my knowledge.

The first ting that came to mind for me was the shenanigans with tractor beam template overlapping obstacles. Also Thweek stealing weird abilities.

Viktor Hel is a good call.

The Jostero/Torani Kulda interaction is also an ongoing debate.

Did tractor beaming never get clarified? Maybe theres some Jank with Ketsu and tractoring your own ships that would raise some eyebrows.

Otherwise I'd guess your list would probably be Viktor, Jostero and Torani kitted up or maybe Thweek and Torani.

If the template can overlap the obstacle when tractor beaming or not is still a debate (as far as I can tell, most judges lean towards that it can't).

I got the idea when I asked myself: "What would then happen if a small ship with Dash's ability (Thweek) got tractor beamed in the activation phase (Space Tug Tractor Array)? Can the template overlap the obstacle now? And can he use the ability to not roll for damage? This will require setup, and I need to build my squad around this!"

The card states "This is not an action or a maneuver, and can cause the ship to overlap obstacles (but not other ships). The ship suffers the effect of any obstacle it overlaps."

I didn't realize there was any debate here. Do people argue that you can't tractor beam ships if the template will overlap an obstacle?

FWIW, asked a few folks around the flgs. There were only maybe 3 or so things thrown out at all that we had seen, but generally speaking everyone at the store had the same ruling for them so it wasn't much of a discussion point. Pretty boring on the stuff you brought up too, tractor beam templates over obstacles was fine, Torani triggering Jostero was fine, Viktor Hel treated both attacks as separate checks for if he rolled exactly two dice, deadeye was fine. Thweek was the only one that people weren't sure of offhand, but about a minute of discussion decided him using Dash's ability would basically make him immune to the damage or stress, but nothing else. Since that was in relation to the tractor beam thing though, no it wouldn't have stopped it in any case.

Any other ongoing debates on rulings that might make for a more interesting list?

I want to run a cloaked quad jumper with feedback array but sadly I don't think this is contentious either - you're not allowed to use it while cloaked :(

While not really debatable rules anymore (thanks Judge rulings posted yesterday), I do have a couple ships that drive opponents crazy with interactions:

I like this little guy: Sarco Plank + Cikatro Vizago + Proximity Mines + Pattern Analyzer + Cloaking Device + Attanni Mindlink + Spacetug Tractor Array (28)

Swap out the cloaking device for scavenger crane and he's a real nuisance of "He can do... what?!?!"

My other favorite make-you-opponent-go-huh list has Kylo Ren in the silencer with Advanced sensors, Primed Thrusters, and Push the Limit. If you are stressed, not only can you advanced sensor a barrel roll or boost, you can then PTL off that for the other one, get a 2nd stress, then do or do not do a green maneuver to clear one of the two stresses. I have to explain that one to almost every opponent.
