DIY Storage?

By JediPartisan, in Star Wars: Legion

I’m new to painted minis games and I looked at things like Battlefoam for storage/transport, but I’m already in the hole for the cost of the minis themselves, I can’t afford Battlefoam.

So I was wondering, couldn’t I just use blue or pink styrofoam? I have a knife for pyrography, so I could cut the sheets as I need them.

Has anyone tried that? Are there problems associated with that type of foam?

i know the foam used in Battlefoam is different, but isn’t styrofoam soft enough?

Thanks ahead of time, for any info.

Have never tried pink insulation foam, not sure if it's too rigid for your purpose.

You could buy some pluck foam. Usually you can get a square foot or two for ten dollars or so. Amazon should have it, and maybe some home improvement stores. (I'm in Canada and bought some for my X-Wing models from Canadian Tire)

Insulation is probably too rigid. Pluck foam or a DIY Magnetic case is probably a better bet.

Glue a steel washer inside the bases. That gives them some extra heft, and you can use magnetic tape to secure them in a box.

I use an empty tool box with a metal plate glued on the bottom and magnets under the bases of the minis

If you want to use foam, there are also those for tools that are easy to customise

I hadn’t heard of pluck foam. I’ll give a look.

Not sure about the magnets, but I’ll take a look at those too.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

*waves hand* Republic Magnets will be fine.

I used a cheap foam knife and a 2 inch foam bed topper I bought off of the online site that everyone seems to use for everything. I then cut the foam to size for my container. It works great, I do wish I had a slightly more high powered knife as I have to wait maybe 30 seconds to a minute between cuts, less dense foam might help too. For my X-Wing stuff I have a tool box that holds everything but my epic ships, and for Legion so far I'm just using the main core set box.

I've seen lots of different options on figure storage. With the plastic and somewhat toughness of the Legion, and the reality that they aren't going to have metal or resin in the line, I think buying a plano case at walmart out of the tacklebox section makes a lot of sense. Its cheap, travels well, and has lots of mini sized spots. Its also easier get cheap packing foam, and cut it to shape to line some of those spots to keep your minis secured.
